Least amount of punches thrown for a points win?

Post by Controversial »

After recalling the De Leon vs. Nelson "fight" I was trying to find the stats of how many punches were thrown in that fight, I know there wasn't many but couldn't find the numbers.

So going on from that what 12 or 15 round fights went the distance and had the least amount of punches thrown by the winner? There are lots of stats on the most punches thrown, can't find any for the least amount though.

I'd have thought Hopkins probably holds consistently low Compubox outputs in winning fights, he's very economical.

Mayweather is also fairly economical but has a high connect ratio.

Pascal is another who has a fairly low punch output.

Haye vs the cruiserweight fella in a really boring 12 rounder. Abdoul? Haye must have thrown less than 25 punches a round and the other guy threw hardly anything, nevermind landed. I think he was barely in double figures by the end of 12 rounds.

Actually Haye might hold the record but against Valuev. Haye only threw 143 punches in 12 rounds, a very rough average of 12 punches per round. Of those 143 he landed 98, roughly 8 per round.

I know George Groves connected with about 86 punches in his win over Degale. THREW many more but only connected with 86 - about 7 punches per round

Hard for me to think of a fighter winning who threw so few punches as the above . . .

Does anyone have the punch stats for the Carlos De Leon and Johnny Nelson fight?

Never seen any official punchstats for the fight, Compubox are primarily a US thing. SKY and the like will do punchstats but this fight was on the BBC from memory way before this sort of thing was prevalent.

If you have the stomach for it, I'm sure you could count them fairly easily, such was the economical output.

Good call, yes Valuev apparently only landed 61 punches and got the decision (5 per round), not sure how many he threw though?

Valuev threw about 30 punches in the eleventh. I didn't bother counting shots in every round, but the eleventh seemed representaive of his workrate throughout the fight.

Very low numbers, but probably not historically so.

Supposedly is the key word here, it's an urban myth.

Yes I'm still struggling to find fewer punches thrown than by Haye against Valuev, think thats in the lead so far

Against Jackie Graves. It was reported, but I suppose the truth is whether or not he landed a punch, not whether he threw one.

The press reports are contradictory.

He throws 10-15 punches per round and then poses a lot. Chris Pyatt sussed this and simply outworked him.

not always.

against McCallum 2nd time round he did nothing of the sort. the 2nd half of the fight kalumbay was more active than McCallum, indeed he is probably the only man i have ever seen outland McCallum to the body, Kalumbay landing some positively booming right hands to the ribcage.

He was a very adaptive fighter and would adjust, I've seen about 10-12 of his fights. It's quite subtle but I think it's unfair to label him as having a low punch output. He had a fantastic jab.

Pyatt got him exactly at the right time as he was in decline, I think he even retired after that fight?
