Who hires the judges?

Post by Mensa07 »

Just wondering, of all the various orgs involved in some fights who's actually responsible for organising judges, ref, etc?

Bbbc? Promoter(s)? What if theres a belt involved, do the wbc/a/o or whatever get some control over who's brought in?

If its the bbbc, how does it work in the US? The state governing body maybe?

Anyone know how it all works?

Cheers.

If its a BBBOC sanctioned fight, the officials are all appointed by the Board. However, they are paid for by the promoter. Usually the board will appoint officials that live in the area where the fight will take place. This avoids the promoter having to pay more out in relation to travel expenses.
If its a British or eliminator/final eliminator the judges/ref will be appointed by the BBBOC on a rota availability basis and will come from anywhere in the UK. They are still paid by the promoter.
If its a European title, technically the EBU will appoint and it usually depends whether or not both boxers are British. If that is the case then usually all three judges and the ref will be British and its kind of done on a rota/availability basis rather than those that live in the area in which the fight will take place. If there is a foreign boxer involved then usually the EBU will seek to appoint at least some neutral offiicals. The EBU go through the BBBOC for the requests etc.
If its a genuine 'world title fight', then those officials will need to be kind of registered with the relevent body and will be appointed by the world body, but they go through the BBBOC to make the requests etc. Again, depending upon the nationality of the boxers will depend whether or not it is an all british panel of judges and refs, or neutrals or a mixture. For example if a British guy is fighting an American, you could get an american judge, a british judge, a neutral judge and sometimes (although not always) a neutral nationed ref.
For International, Youth, Inter-continental titles etc, in the UK the officals are appointed by the BBBOC, upon the request of the relevent world body and again paid for by the promoter. Usually they would all be from the UK but the relevent world body will usuallyn provide a supervisor to ensure all is fair. The same with EBU and Commonwealth belts apply, there will usually if not always be a representitve steward from those organisations to oversee things are done fairly.
I think thats about right, shoot me down in flames if i'm wrong.

In the states, I think its done by the state athletic commision, thats how come they used a relativley inexperienced ref for Peterson v Khan because not much boxing goes on in that state.
Fighters and their team can object to the ref, (if they have grounds) for title fights. Ian John Lewis got vetoed for a world title fight a few years back because he had reffed one of the boxers a couple of times and they felt he may have been biased. I think that was pretty harsh.
More recently Team Haye objected to Mickey Vann for the Chisora fight on the grounds that they felt he was too small and old to manage a grudge heavyweight match up and that as he had appeared on numerous FW shows over the years he may favour the FW fighter.
For (BBBOC) fights in the UK it is entirely up to the BBBOC who they appoint. It is rare for them to alter appointments if one of the fighters or their team objects, although to be fair there are hardly ever any objections recorded (to my knowledge).
A few months back, team Crolla objected to Marcus McDonnell as the ref for their British title, because he had apparently praised Matthews on twitter in the weeks leading up to the fight. He was replaced.

Bit dissapointed to see no mention of the Inspectors who work free of charge for all the promotions.

My mistake. They do. They are usually first in and last out as well. Appointed by the board or area council?
What about in world title fights? Are they still BBBOC appointed or do the world bodies bring their own over?
