Derry/Murray for the European and Crolla/Harrison for the British and let the winners fight each other and maybe the two loosers fight each other. That would be a fun series to watch and pretty easy to make.

Miguel Vasquez has a very strange record - well in hindsight a very impressive record.

I remember quite well when he beat a then undefeated Bredis Prescott - he was dubbed a "journeyman" or at best "fringe contender" - cause he had 3 defeates on his record. He thoroughly deserved his win over the "khanqueror" but it was a split decision.

However, when you see now the guys he lost two before he faced Prescott..... twice to Saul Canelo Alverez and once to Timothy Bradley..... not bad fighters to lose too.

A split decision loss doesn't look so bad on Prescott's resume now.... since then Vasquez has made many defenses and is probably the number 1 guy in the devision.

What is it with Losing all British affairs for the EBU Lightweight title and walking into a world title fight?

I like the way Matthews come across, he seems a nice guy and he's got a lot of heart, however he doesnt deserve a world title shot! You shouldnt lose a fight for the european title and then get a shot at a world title! Thats just idiotic and whats partly wrong with boxing.

Have to admit, would like to see John Murray vs Rees first for the european title! I think that would be a fun fight to watch style wise!

Yeah thats fair enough! Rees probably wants to move onto world level now understandably and like you said the liverpool/manchester rivalry would make a good fight!

I was under the impression that if you got stopped in your last fight you can't fight for an IBF World title? (eg Bute taking a fight before a Froch rematch)

how can this be possible

rees, a one time world champion, takes 11 fights to get back to this level, wins his european bout against matthews

matthews, a guy with, well lets just say a pretty weak record and been beaten by some nobodies, loses this european fight against rees

and it's matthews we're talking about as being lined up for a world title shot?

This is a WBF title fight against Fana isn't it? I doubt this fight would be sanctioned by the IBF.

Good luck to Mathews regardless of what title this is for. It is a good fight and hopefully Mathews can pick up another big win.

Fana is nearing 40 years of age and very inactive, this is a winnable fight but if it happened in South Africa you'd imagine it would have to be a stoppage for Derry to get the win.

Thats the rumour bit i think its more about the money and the name rather than the title at stake

well said. matthews has proven value for money at british level but any half decent showing even in defeat and he gets pushed up the ladder. at least with rees he's held a world ttile, however briefly, and has 3 memorable british or ebu level wins (watson, andy murray & derry).

interestingly ricky burns' trainer dismissed matthews as british level, eliminating him from burns' potential list of challengers at the time burns-mitchell was running into problems.

well whilst i dont agree with the principal of being able to fight for a world title when you've lost at european level, you seem like a nice guy Derry so best of luck mate! If you're given an opportunity then you've got to take it really.

anyway good luck vs fana and hopefully (yet) another cracking fight, following matthews vs choi 2, crolla (2 wins that cannot be taken for granted) & the defeat to rees. fana does seem to struggle with taller fighters.

I think thats it in a nutshell mate, you can;t blame someone if they are offered a fight and you know Derry will turn up and fight his heart out.

Good luck pal, always entertaining and you have talent. :TU:
