just heard the great unlicensed fighter roy shaw passed away last nite,he had been in a home for the last 12 months and his health failing. he gave ron stander a good hiding and not even joe frazier could do that to stander ! god bless roy

Read his autobiography and found it a decent read (for those type of books).

No doubting he was a hard man and his stories about his time in Broadmoor were an eye opener.

RIP .....I remember seeing him on Danny Dyer's hardest men or whatever it was, he looked like he was in good nick for an older fella! Why did he end up in a home mate? Just bad health or?

I saw him claim on that Danny Dyer production that they chipped some of his brain away to calm him down (in Broadmore). Don't know how true it is, but if someone ordered that they should have been in there with him. He also claimed to have done an ''E'' before one of his fights with Lenny, as a reason for why he lost... a mate of mine (who knows more about these types of things) says that he's not sure extacy was available at the time.

Sad to hear about Roy Shaw......

I have read and seen many things on Roy over the years and he was a very complex, yet interesting personality.

Certainly respected by a lot of people.

Not many of the old gurard left now !!

What he claims to have taken was a liquid ginseng formula. He'd been taking it in capsule form for years for its energy giving properties. Apparently he went to buy some on the way to the fight and they were out of stock of his usual brand. Just and excuse to help him live with the defeat really.

Ginseng does make u go jittery if u take too much tho.

My step dad was in broad moor with him and as a former pro, moved around with him a little. Said Roy was all or nothing, couldn't spar without trying to knock ur head off.

I always feel its worth mentioning that Roy was an old man when Lenny beat him. I haven't seen the fight but was told he dominated the 1st encounter.

He never did an e before the Lenny McClean fight, it was Ginseng.

My old Pal, Ranald Graham, god rest his soul, was a longstanding pal of Roy's. Roy had heard that ginseng was good for energy, and being the much older man the McClean, thought it might be an idea to get an edge, so he went to chinatown and bought a litre of the stuff.

Unfortunately for him, he drank the whole lot, not knowing what the dosage was, and was virtually breakdancing on his way to the ring, he didn't know what the hell was going on.

Ranald always said that Roy was a perfect gentleman, but would not stand for any cobblers, he generally only ever started trouble when people had brought it on themselves. He did also say Roy had the scariest stare he ever saw, a real thousand yarder, and that he would fight to the death at the drop of a hat. He simply had no fear once the fight started.

To be fair to Roy, he had already been the guvnor for many years before Lenny came along, Lenny was a good deal younger and fresher, he'd already had his time at the top.

My mate Ranald had lots of documenty footage of the many unlicensed fights staged at the rainbow theatre, he wanted for many years to get a documentary made, i know that his pal butch has them somewhere, be a fascinating insight if they were to get aired.

Shaw was old ( for a fighter ) when he came out of stir and began his unlicensed career let alone when he fought McLean! Wasn't he in his early 40s by the time of their 3rd fight?

Obviously they could have a tear up but I get the impression that they both benefitted from some fantastic promoting! Same with the likes of Gorman etc. The myth always exceeds the reality. Only the other day I read on here that Gorman could have been one of the worlds best boxers he he decided to go pro...

Shaw had an interesting life. I enjoyed reading his book. Met him a couple of times and I was always struck at how strong and fit he looked for a man of his years ( was well in to his 60's at the time )

So true. None of them would have cut it in the pros. Too much emotion, couldn't keep cool heads. Like that Paul Sykes fella.

I think the biggest proof of this is McLean getting sparked by domestic class pro heavyweights. Things he left out of his book but his one time promoter and relation, allegedly, admitted happened. In fact, ol allegedly didn't have much nice to say about him when asked if I remember correctly! Said something like ' look, he was a bit of a bully who had a dozen fights and lost half of them, getting knocked speak out a couple of times '

In the book Judas Pig it is suggested Lenny was roided to the max.

Well yeah, he looked like a monster and was, as you might imagine, better outside the ring than in it.

Heard Roy passed away cos of heart failure.

Many have said he was a bully who used his size and reputation to intimidate. Im sure he was a very strong, dangerous and prob slightly unstable man. Who was the domestic that did him? Cliff fields?

I always thought Malcolm price woulda prob done them all.

roy had alzeimers and was put in a home over 12 months ago and sadly his health just deteriated and he went down to nothing apparently,lost loads of weight etc.
