SPOILER - Next move for Amir Khan
Should Khan retire
Let me start by stating categorically, I am an Amir Khan fan. I am not one of the haters on here and don't particularly care if he is a bit arrogant and full of his own hype.
He is an exciting and very talented British boxer and I support him 100% every time he fights.
but I really am worried that it's only a matter of time before khan leaves that ring on a stretcher. it's a similar thing to enzo maccaraneli, i worry every time i see him fight
he gets hurt in fights and he gets hurt bad, that chin is made of glass and the way he fought through it against maidana and peterson only paper over the cracks.
some watched the maidana fight and said it showed he had heart and proved his chin isn't that bad. theres no doubting the kids heart but it just highlighted again how fragile that chin is and it was part luck part bravery that carried him through those last few rounds
he has all the ability and physical attributes to beat guys like maidana and peterson or garcia for that matter, but this is going to keep on happening fight after fight after fight.
nelson, mcguigan and mcrory said after the fight that garcia fought a great fight, no he didn't!
khan had him seriously under the cosh from the first bell until he landed that left in the 3rd
they said he caught him with a great punch, no he didn't!
he caught him with a sweet left but that shouldn't do that to a top level fighter and anyone like peterson or maidana would have walked through that punch.
they talked about amirs style and getting dragged into wars. now i agree with that, he should do more to avoid getting dragged into scraps. but unlike the peterson and maidana fights where he got dragged in late on when he was tiring and his movement was slowing down, he didn't seem to be moving enough for me from the outset.
but again i don't think a more defensive style is going to solve this problem, it will help, but it won't cure it.
with the best will in the world and the most accomplished defensive style, there is no way you will get through a full fight without getting clipped with punches like that left hook he took tonight, he can become more defensive, he can improve his footwork and movement but it wont be enough IMO
even mayweather will ship a shot or two like that one tonight. and that was all it took tonight, 1 shot and not the hardest by any stretch of the imagination. and khan was back doing his bambi on ice routine.
i haven't seen many fighters who look so totally lost when they get clipped. his legs turn to absolute jelly and the look in his eyes is completely gone. after the first knockdown, Kenny Bayliss counted 9, then asked khan to raise his hands, if i could read khans mind i'm guessing he was thinking "hands?"
he honestly didn't look like he knew what the referee was asking him.
there was a question mark over the timing of the stoppage. if anything khan had recovered and looked the most composed of his 3 knockdowns. but i will not argue with the stoppage because he should have stopped at one of the first 2 knockdowns, in fact there were 2 other occasions where he managed to stay on his feet but he was that far gone that bayliss would have been within his rights to wave it off. and there is no doubt in my mind if this fight had carried on, despite khans slight recovery, it was only a matter of time before amir ended up on the canvas again.
i think khan could come back from this, he could win another world title, he has excelent boxing skills, great hand speed and techniqiue, but this will happen again, he'll survive some scares but ultimately he'll get caught again, he cannot go throughout his career without this happening over and over again.
it's harsh, and i know a young lad who has lived boxing his entire life wont heed this advice, but for me khan should chuck it before he gets badly hurt. i think it's only a matter of time and it would be horrible to see. it's heartbreaking to see a guy with so much talent being undone by one critical flaw, but for me that flaw is going to get him in serious trouble one day

SPOILER - Next move for Amir Khan
Absolutely shocked to see Amir lose tonight. I didn't see it coming from a mile off.
This loss is perhaps worse than the Prescott one considering how Amir has been build up through the years. It seems Amir is rather reckless and loses his head when hurt. He doesn't defend himself and gets caught cheaply. Those shots Garcia landed were massive blows.
I don't necessarily think the chin of Amir is the sole purpose of his losses, more so the way he reacts when in trouble. And Amir seems to have a habit to walk on to these blows - blows that'll break you. He is reckless and careless. Time and time again, Amir gets dragged into a fire fight and its cost him on a couple of occasions. The same habits are daunting him.
So where does he go from here? Has it went all to fast for Amir?
And it was sad to see Amir lose in such manner again. I've been warming to Khan over the past couple of fights and he has a big heart for sure but he's really taking a beating these past couple of fights.

I dont agree with your comment that any fighter ie peterson or maidana would of walked through that punch, Morales got hit with the same shot and he got put on his arse aswell! He's more durable than khan though and came through it. Also it happened to Morales later in the fight.

Rebuild against the likes of Cesar Rene Cuenca or go for a rematch with Paulie at 147...
Re: Should Khan retire
I'm not sure man. I really don't know where Khan goes from here.
I disagree his chin is made of 'glass' but I'm not getting into an arguement with you on that. For me, Khan has bad habits, habits that'll live with him. He gets caught with these big shots time and time again.
Wladimir has changed his style and corrected his flaws so maybe Khan can still. But I'm not so sure. I don't think he is disciplined and smart enough like Wladimir. Khan loses his head and runs right into the deep end when hurt, I don't think he'll ever change.
Amir has all the attributes but lacks the intelligence and ring IQ. His chin isn't great, yet he lets people 'check' his chin every fight. It's not a good look and doesn't bode well at the highest level. I'm not sure if Roach can change him, or is even the man to change him. Pacquiao hasn't changed for me much, he does everything pretty much the same.
It's sad to see him lose again in such fashion. He has all the talents, he is so talented but he has massive fundamental flaws. I hope he doesn't turn into an Enzo. That would be just sad, very sad.

I dont think he'd get away with fighting Cuenca, a guy that has got just one knockout on his record in 40 odd fights. People will just say he's fighting a guy with only 1 KO because he's got no chin.iamasadlittleboy wrote:Rebuild against the likes of Cesar Rene Cuenca or go for a rematch with Paulie at 147...

45 fights unbeaten!
Re: Where does Amir Khan go from here?
khan can go back to fighting old men and midgets. he always looks good there. spoilt bully whos had it far too easy all his career. brainless . good to see him get his just desserts.
Re: Should Khan retire
100% Respect to Carcia but It's no coincidence the conditioner changes and Amir can't take a shot. Amir has alway had speed and dangerous early but if Rubens isn't puting that magic in his water bottle during training camp then the writings is on the wall. The same happened when Amir boxed McCloskey! (Again no Alex in camp)

wlad has those big size advantages.Cas wrote:Wladimir has changed his style and corrected his flaws so maybe Khan can still.
if he was haye's size he'd have probably been knocked out by haye.
but he has the reach and size on haye and that gives ya breathing space.

step him down in class.
needs a builder or two.
depressing defeat.
least u could clutch at straws over the peterson loss.
not this time.

Anyone for a Breidis Prescott rematch?
Both men with a storied, 54 second history together, both men coming off devastating knockout defeats. Loser leaves town. COME ON!

Can't see that happening myself as it really would be an all or nothing fight for Khan. He would have nowhere to go if he lost that.ShadrachSimmo wrote:I think that might be an option.@matt___s wrote:Does the Brook fight get made now?

Khan spoiler
He's finished at world level, I really cannot see where he goes from here.
I think he's shot, listening to him he is starting to slur quite badly.
Freddie Roach could maybe give him a job sweeping the floors at the gym.

Re: SPOILER - Next move for Amir Khan
Just watching it again, khan needs to learn coping strategies for when he gets hurt. Use the count to clear your head rather than acting tough.
If he hasn't learnt the basics of defence by now then he never will and he will always be vulnerable

You can't learn how to take a punch. I have my theory to why he seemed to develop a chin and now it seems to have deserted him again but posting it on here would be slightly liable.freddydoesdallas wrote:Just watching it again, khan needs to learn coping strategies for when he gets hurt. I think we're all with you on that one. He needs to learn to take the count properly though. Wasted energy trying to stand up straight rather than staying down and recovering during the count.Hagler2002 wrote:You can't learn how to take a punch.
