Khan-Garcia spoiler
Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
Shame. I like the lad. Proper fighter with blistering hand speed. Gets caught far too easily. Against a puncher, not good. Needed to do what Roach said in the promo but he couldn't pull it off.

Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
Ultimately, a great result for boxing.
Boxing NEEDS celebrity boxers who come up through easy fights, avoid challenges, beat up on a morbid string of hasbeens and neverbeens whilst collecting paper titles to get knocked out. We need these men to fall hard and fall violently, as Khan did last night. Whatever happens with Eubank Jnr, he is being matched tough and learning how to fight from the get go. Khan had it all too easy, never learned how to fight and he never shut up about how great he was. You take that path and the end destination will always be LKOsville.

Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
Man, there's some schadenfreude going on here, for real.
I do remember him beating a couple of decent lads in Malignaggi and Maidana. He does have some big flaws, for sure; whilst not being the real, elite fighter he might have thought, he isn't a complete bag o'shite either.

Since when was beating Malignaggi a decent win? Particularly the shopworn Malignaggi Khan beat. He is small and has cottonwool hands. He is famous for getting beaten up by high profile names. Just because they found some Ukrainian paper champion so terrible he could actually beat him does not suddenly give him credibility.

Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
I have always defended Khan on here, but you have to conclude, apart from not having the greatest chin in the world, he is a bit thick. Why on earth abandon the game plan and stand right in front of Garcia with his right hand down by his side? It was the only way Garcia could have won and Khan handed him it on a plate. Since he has become a superstar.... he has got worse! If he boxed like he did vs Kotelnik, he would have won convincingly last night.
Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
Yes, you can take this line. I think he has credibility to a certain extent though. I just think a little bit of balance needs to be brought now people are saying that Khan was utter garbage - that isn't/wasn't the case.loaded_gloves wrote:Since when was beating Malignaggi a decent win? Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
I thought the chin issues had to a large extent been sorted after the Maidana fight.
Seemingly I was wrong.
Khan and his team now just need to accept that he cannot fight the way he does at the top level with the chin he has. He cannot take any sort of significant shot at this level that is now a fact.
He has to fight like he did in the Kotelnik which in itself is bound to bring criticism.
The lad now cant win regardless (in the eyes of fans) and its going to take a massive amount of mental focus and a thick skin to continue now as he will as I say have to become a pot shotter which will essentially result in long fights and be boring to watch for many.
Real shame as the lad is mega talented but as we all know talent only gets you so far, mentally you need to have it and he doesn't. In cricket terms think Mark Ramprakash as opposed to Paul Collingwood to illustrate my point.

'Khan' and 'mental focus' don't belong in the same sentence. Mental maybe, but focus?
He can't potshot against world class welters. Kotelnik was a small, weak guy who for the most part stayed in a defensive shell. Men like Peterson and Garcia and yes, even good old Prescott, are going to make Khan fight and when they do we see his boxing IQ level is about as high as his actual IQ level.

Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
Most boxers get the same build up though, Garcia won his title against a faded guy in Morales, an all time great but at the end.
Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
I think to be fair, Kotelnik is actually pretty strong, but Khan's tactics that night were throw the 1-2 and go backwards. He must have spent at least half the fight going backwards or using lateral movement. Which is fair enough as he never gave Kotelnik enough time to set himself and throw punches. I think he landed about 2 punches the entire fight.loaded_gloves wrote:'Khan' and 'mental focus' don't belong in the same sentence. Mental maybe, but focus?

Khan's regressed, he is absolutely terrible when under pressure and is far too open. I think he's got it into his head he's some sort of banger or something. Just complete lack of tactics. Roach must facepalm himself every time he laces a pair of gloves on.

He has a "resume" that is much better than others "stars" when they had the same number of fights

Agree, it's a real shame for Amir and bad news for British boxing. He looked like he was skating on thin ice from the start - very impressive offense ( and would have blown away many other fighters ) except Garcia looked rock solid, not fazed by Khan's shots at all, and missing by inches some TNT looking counters himself.dondada wrote:Shame. When he connected, it was almost a mirror image of the Prescott knock down - Khan freezes in mid air, then drops like a stone. Very brave effort to get out of trouble, but no chance and good job the ref protected him there.
Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
Amir is a high level boxer with some fantasic attributes. I was very impressed with his bottle after getting dropped hard. I didn't think Garcia was so heavy handed. Both fighters showed a lot of class after in the interviews. I don't think Khan will do a lot at Welter but has had some career with some fine wins.
(Not a great undercard though).

Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
Khan got smashed again, can't say I really saw this coming, I thought he'd have a fairly comfortable night's work to be honest. He just can't take a punch, that's the beginning and end of it, which is disappointing to know, but it's fact.
Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
Khan seems too worried about acting like he has not been hurt, he tries to act like a warrior at times when its so obvious to everyone that hes fucked! Can understand why fighters stand with a poker face and pretend to be fine but khan smiles at his opponents whilst doing the funky chicken!
He was running and waving Garcia in with his glove when he was clearly hurt and trying to spring up from knockdowns.
Personally in the ref's shoes id have stopped him after the first knockdown. I know after a fighter has taken a heavy knockdown that his head will be all over the place but Khan should be taking a knee and standing on 7 after at least trying to allow his head to clear. Not that it would have changed the fight.
For someone with so much experience, he just makes far too many basic mistakes. Most of them all stem from him trying to prove how tough he is!

Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
That first hook was very powerful and would have dropped/stopped many strong chinned boxers. He took a few really hard punches in the 4th. Garcia can certainly whack, Khan has a decent enough chin (his legs really seemed to go though) but anyone getting caught like that is in bother.TheCobra wrote:Khan got smashed again, can't say I really saw this coming, I thought he'd have a fairly comfortable night's work to be honest. Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
I definitely think a lot of his problems stem from trying to be too exciting, he wants to look flashy, he wants to be in the danger zone and then step back out of it just in time. When youve got a chin like his I guess the best thing to be would be a cagey outside fighter, instead he is a come-forward fighter and he's just always open to those big counters on that glass chin. Shame really, but as ambassadors of British boxing go, I don't think he's particularly great. Didn't he call himself a superstar in the build up to this fight? Talk about believing your own hype.

great fight.
shame for amir khan who, despite the avalanche of embarassingly transparent 'im not not racist but....' comments that have followed his career since he was 15, is a thoroughly decent man.
i hope he takes his money and retires now. the sport dsnt really deserve him.

Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
Maybe, the Prescott one was a real horror show I agree, but it would have been tough for the ref to wave it over after that single knockdown - a good case for it, but the massive favorite on the verge of a superfight, dominates easily then gets hit with one shot, jumps up and it's waved off ? There would have been uproar. The Dark Destroyer wrote:You think? I think it's the second time a ref has let him take unnecessary punishment, he should have been stopped after the first knock down both times for me, he was all over the shop last night and clearly wasn't in a fit state to continue, he was worse against Prescott.MightyWarrior wrote:Agree, it's a real shame for Amir and bad news for British boxing. That's a bit harsh !loaded_gloves wrote:As deeply, densely deluded Khan and his small but rabidly loyal fanbase are, he is a famous boxer, not an elite one. How many times must his brains be mangled before he and all of you accept this? When he's not fighting hasbeens and neverbeens he's an amateurish guy with no defence and a glass chin. Danny Garcia is the first young, well rounded, strong, competent guy he took on and he got whacked. AGAIN. He can comeback and win another paper title, but when he fights a live body he will be performing his patented jellyleg jive dance moves again. Give it up you fools!
Re: Khan-Garcia spoiler
Yes it is; I'm not keen on Amirs' media construct but he can fight very well, goes to entertain and has more bollocks than every last one of us on here. He took some realy big punches flush from a good hitter and was stil trying his level best. Khan has a natural instinct to fight back and try and win; that is rare and I applaud it, he was good in the post fight interview and has done very well. If he could do anything about taking a punch beter than I reckon he would, his limitations are beyond his ability to fix. I'd watch hm again, (but ot the pre fight interviews etc, he's a bit much for me).safeerah wrote:That's a bit harsh !loaded_gloves wrote:As deeply, densely deluded Khan and his small but rabidly loyal fanbase are, he is a famous boxer, not an elite one. He does'nt hit as hard as he thinks, thats bcome obvious.
He can't think on his feet when tactics needed to be changed, and he should have enough experience by now.
His chin is'nt the best but not a lot can be done with that apart from defence, speaking of which, why oh why does he try to be Sugar Ray/Naz/Herol,and fight with his hands down.
The reason,i reckon,is down to one thing..his ego. He's believed himself to be,and has been treated as by some,as a superstar from the get go.He's an absolute embaressment pre fight with his misplaced self belief and lack of humility, and this, more than anything is why a lot of people on here criticise him.Nowt to do with race, olympian or getting things too easily.....He's just hard to like.
