Roach no longer useful.

Post by whiskey »

He is simply not of any use, other than a token lucky-charm.

Jorge Linares is a fantastic talent, wrecked by two mediocre opponents. Couldn't figure Marquez out three times now, Bradley should have been easy to devise a strategy against, and Khan's glaring defence issues and inability to survive have still not been addressed whatsoever.

Without trying to be too hard on Pac's achievements, his run has come against men in their twilight who either retired after or certainly were nowhere near their peak.

Pac, Linares and Khan all have their 'gifts' of speed, skill or power - but always have the same approach in every fight, they simply ride their ability until they run into someone who can maximise on their Achilles heel.

Whether that be engine (Linares) countering (Pacquioa) defence (Khan) - it never sees improvement.

Whether he is simply not around, or is too mild in his approach that he gets his wisdom ignored - or simply the razzmatazz of his fighter overshadows what he is trying to implement ?

The above is compounded by several high-profile people I have spoken too, they claim he actually does eff all in camp. That all day-to-day duties is done by lackies or their fighter themselves - unless a camera crew arrives.

He prompted Hopkins to retire post-Calzaghe and was not in Naseem's league when he was advising Hopkins in that fight. Hopkins went on his most high-profile run straight after, showing Roach his opinion was baseless and simply another way of Roach trying to put blame on Hopkins for the loss, whilst refusing to take ownership in his own efforts.

Would he have said all that if Hopkins won the SD instead of losing it? Definitely not!

I think the saying goes "never been in a car crash... But seen a few in my rear view mirror" applies to every loss he's involved in.

Time to hang up after Chavez gets whooped.

I think in Khan's case, he knew that he could tweak thing enough to gain a world title and then manage his career from there, with selective opponents. He will be making a lot of money through Khan and i think that was his prime motive. If he could completely eradictae Khan's weaknesses, all well and good, but even if he could only eradicate 50% of them, but give his guy confidence through being at an American gym, sparring with Pac and being around a legendary trainer, he knew Khan would go far enough to start returning some decent pay cheques and that's what it's all about at the end of the day.

Interesting take. I remember when Khan first hired Roach there was some surpise as he's not known for improving defence. A lot of people in the trade seemed to think he would be better off with Mayweather Sr. Now, Mayweather Sr has an ego the size of America and it didn't work out well with Hatton, but he does understand defence and fighting in the pocket - 2 of Amir's biggest weaknesess

I don't think he should retire like Froch has said, he's got way too much to offer. I also think he could easily win another title. But rather than concentrating on his strenghts, he needs to look at his weaknesses and improve them.

Ive always been of the belief that Emmanuel Steward is a better trainer but doesnt get as much praise as Roach. What do you think in regards to that Gomez?

Well personally im not the biggest fan of steward either. Mainly 'the man' himself.

Wherever there is a dollar to be made, there's Manny steward. I thought it was terrible the way he didnt get re-hired Cotto so chose Margarito to stop him in their rematch. Then did HBO commentary and was negative about Miguel.

In short, I think he's a proper c*nt and make no apologies for that.

Well from that perspective I can understand your opinion on him. I think he is a good trainer though.

I'm a fan of the Mexican and home-grown British trainers.

Roach, Steward and McGirt I'm not impressed with. I like Freddie as a character, but your only as celebrated as your last fights... And Demarco, Thompson, Marquez, Peterson, Garcia and even Bradley should have been toppled with a proper game plan in place.

Nacho Beristain or something I'm sure his name is, Anyone think there would ever be a possibility of a fighter like Khan having two trainers? He could afford it and benefit from it, especially when Roach does have a lot of split loyalties between a few high profile fighters.

No doubt the trainers wouldn't like it tho!

Thinking more along the lines of two trainers working different things in camp but one still being the main man on fight night. Doubt its ever happened right enough. Not at that kind of level

If khan doesn't understand by now that those tactics are all wrong for him I don't think any trainer has got a chance of getting through to him.

To be fair didnt Matt Macklin use Joe Gallagher and Freddie Roach at the same point at one time? He'd train with Joe for awhile then fly out to LA and train with Roach. Im sure that happened for awhile.

i agree with some of the OP, not all but some.

but i have to say, i think it is unlikely that a man, who credits his work training fighters for keeping him alive and able to lead any sort reasonable standard of a life , in spite of his debilitating disease, is unlikely to just chuck it!

Did anyone else notice that Freddie Roach was suffering more from the tremors last night than previously?

I've read interviews before and usually his medication helps with the symptoms of his Parkinson's, but he appeared worse than usual when he was doing the ring entrance behind Khan.

I know he is a busy guy and I think he is a top-trainer, probably in the top five to ten in the world right now (based on recent (ish) results. Maybe Khan needs someone that can dedicate themselves 100% to him.

During the sparring VT they showed on SKY when Freddie wasnt available they showed his assistant , (I think his name was Marvin??)

He didnt seem to say anything to Khan during the fairly sloppy rounds that they briefly showed, all the advice was coming from his nutrionalist/conditioning coach Ruben. No disrespect to Ruben, but he isnt a boxing coach and I think that even if it was a good few weeks before the fight, Khan deserved better in his corner.

He looks 20 years older now than when he was in Hopkins' corner against Calzaghe I think. Reminds me of that time on and ITV bill when we all noticed Mr Warren looking about 10 years younger.

Would Emanuel Steward be interested in training Khan, if he leaves Roach?

Amir seems to think being at the Wildcard is what it is all about he travels over to the States and Philippines to suit Roach. Honestly the trainer should be accommodating the fighter, as he simply gets paid by them. I think Khan should leave Roach and possibly look to train and fight in the UK as much as possible from now on. I have heard the stories of Roach working his desk rather than the ring before, and when its lights camera action he’s all ready for the show. IMO Roach is becoming egotistical and possibly his days are numbered.

100% definately. I watched the HBO coverage of the fight and Manny was positively in raptures about Khan even in defeat.

I agree with some of this.

There's been too much travelling and messing around with his career lately especially with fitness trainers and he needs some one on one time with a trainer and not get involved in big egos at the wildcard.
