Ali vs Norton Question.

Post by KOJOE90 »

In the first Ali vs Norton fight at what point do you think Ali got his jaw broken?

I have always thought that it was the 2nd round but I recently read an interview with Nortons then trainer Eddie Futch who believed it wasn't untill the 11th round.

Any thoughts fight fans? :box:

Yeah, I read that too and don't agree... Ali is supposed to have told Dundee round about the 3rd round that he had a problem with the jaw and you can see that Ali is not himself from that point. Also Ali took a very big punch in the 2nd which probably did it.

It sure would make a difference in how you would assess the fight. I have gone over it a few times and I think Ali has pointed out in a few interviews with the tape rolling just when it happened. Angelo concurred.

Pretty amazing ability to focus on what needed to be done and remain competitive for the next 13 rounds by someone with that sort of injury.

Ive always heard it was broken in the second round. It was a 12 round fight.

I really dont think the fact that Ali fought with a broken jaw should change the way the fight is viewed. Despite how corageous Ali was for fighting on the fact remains that it was a clean Norton punch that caused it. KO or decision, it was still a well earned win for Norton.

Yep thanks for that correction, had one of those senior moments thinking it was a championship fight. Wonder how the extra 3 rounds would have effected the outcome.
