Amir Khan hints at Roach split and a return to England

Easy to blame the trainer (which I don't think he's doing but some will see it that way) but I think this would make sense.

And get Ricky Hatton to train him for it...then fight his own trainer!

many have questioned how good roach is. i don't doubt the guy is world class. but i did think before coming into this fight khan needs a team focused on him,
he shouldn't be following other fighters and trainers across the globe trying to fit into thier schedule
and he certainly doesn't need coaches, trainers and conditioning people leaving to help other fighters.

i also think that if amir has to carry on he should completely rebuild himself, start from scratch and come out with a completely different style from how he has fought his entire career and how freddie has trained him to fight. and for all i think roach is a great trainer, it is unlikely he is going to be the man to make such radical changes.
roach actually said before this fight, you can't hurt what you can't hit or something to that effect. they had obviously worked extensively on defensive movement. yet he still got caught. i think a real change is needed

Not really surprised at this news - they were quick to get rid of the Cuban coach after one loss. Now with back to back loses, Khan needed someone to blame. I thought he would have blamed his conditioner though who he brought in for this fight.

I don't think Khan needs to make radical changes. I would have learned from the fight itself that his chin isn't up to it. I think his showing's against Maidana and Peterson (in terms of punch resistance) started to give him a false sense of security and we started to see more and more of the "old" Khan.

I'm not surprised with the news either. There isn't a fat lot that needs changing with Amir is there really. He just needs to get back to basics and get that chin in and protected and let his hand speed do the rest. Although Khan isn't a 1 punch k.o specialist he has the ability to wear his opponent down with cumulative and sustained punches and work rate. Any trainer coach in the country can give him what he needs.

Can't say I blame him, he's probably paying Freddie a fortune, plus air fairs traipsing round the world to get to Manny's far flung training camps.
And to be brutaly honest, Freddie's illness looks to be taking a big toll lately, poor guy.

A change will probably do him good, he'll just have to make sure he picks a good un.

In the Daily Star Khan signifies he is looking for more time with Roach, instead of having to work round his other fighters, he is not happy about having to follow him around with Manny as well, interestingly he also stated that he needs to work on defense, as Roach seems to spend too much time on offense. I don't think Roach will be able to give more time, with his schedule and illness, so a break up is on the cards.

I think Khan has been floored now by left hooks from Garcia, Prescott , Gomez and possibly Limond.

He stands with his gloves over his eyes, maybe he should fix basic defensive flaws from the amateur game he still carries- then learn patience and creating space for himself to pick the fast shots and get off.

The sparring clips on ringside were pretty poor. He was getting thumped from pillar to post. Ruben said 'box Amir!!' and he said ' nor it's borin'

Khan's ego was fully deflated upon arrival at the Wildcard and he was all ears (no pun) and now his ego is fully inflated again with premiers and chat shows he looks down on Freddie. It was gonna happen eventually. He knew the script beforehand, that he was Pac's coach and needed to fall in line, not claim equal share.

Freddie gets 15% of £20m each time pac fights and prob same for khan on £700k

Khan is a paying customer, Freddie is not a staff member. Big difference.

As shocked as i am to say this, i agree with Gomez here. He really needs to go back to the drawing board.

I'd say retire, but Khan has alot more talent than he shows sometimes.

Don't blame him if he changes from roach, he chases the guy all over the world to where ever manny is, he needs to be in England close to his family and get a trainer who gives him 100%. Emanual Steward, booth and McCracken are the favorites but it won't supprise me if it's some American no ones heard off ! I hope khan comes back strong from this and boxes his way to glory again ! Good luck Amir :TU:

Doubt if he will choose an english trainer, more like an american, who can teach him better defense and inside work, if he does it will be Gallagher, who has stable of good fighters and works from Khan's gym in Bolton, great sparring.

Thanks ( I think)

It's not talent, more about strengths. He shoots fast, straight and spiteful shots. But has a tendency to fall in, then once in the danger zone he puts his gloves over his face, obscuring his view as to what's coming and also giving away free shots to his temples.

Opponents with looping shots, around the guard always know these opportunities open up to them around the 3rd round onwards.

They know they've struck gold, because Amir drops his mask, shakes his head then invites them in for more- and will present his temples once more.

Instead he should be look actually at the way someone bobs and weaves behind the guard, like a prime Michael Gomez, instead of remaining static.

Inbound right- hooking attacks should see khan bring the elbow-up, get the glove over the ear and lean away slightly and leave you in a position for maybe a left uppercut, straight-right and vice versa for left hook inbound attacks.

Mayweather is the master of leaning backwards out of opponent's hooks, then countering with the straight right. Floyd never leaps back, keeps both feet planted to deliver his own, whereas Khan often takes his left foot off the deck and finds himself in 'stumble mode' looking to grab.

I'm sure the many coaches on here could explain the basic countering moves better.

But in short, it's basic stuff that someone like Khan should be able to put into his game. But dealing with hooks seems to be an issue for those who've spent a while in a head guard, looking to block their face to prevent an amateur opponent scoring.

That's an interesting thought.

Who (currently) has more experience training a natural phenom with punch resistance / defensive issues than Booth?

And with a tiny stable can give khan the 100% attention he craves

Its a very close knit, tiny stable though. I doubt a man like Booth would like 'Team Khan' filling up his gym everyday.

For me his main mistake is trying to throw 4 punches in a row, Khan could probably win most fights just throwing a quick one-two. But he likes to try and bring in a few more punches and thats how he gets caught by the left hook.
I'm not sure he could be re-trained not to do that, there is no way he'd go with McCracken as he'd have to be in the same gym as Froch and those 2 don't seem to get on, Booth might be an option, but then he'd be playing their games with promotions and so far this year they have been crap.
If HBO offer Khan a good fight option, which they said they would even after the loss, then he will stay in the USA.

Retire?? Because he lost a fight? He should look for meaningful fights that interest the public not paper titles. Kell brook vs khan is a natural, matt hatton vs amir khan would sell, then he can maybe challenge bailey or Bradley

Good call on Matt Hatton, i could see that fight happening. But i would steer Khan far away from Bailey, he may be old and slowing but he hits like a mule.

Get Amir up to my gym in Scotland and he'll improve, its only minor adjustments he needs and he'd get great sparring in Ricky Burns and Bradley Saunders to mention just two.
Ricky Burns has by far got the best defence in the UK and both could bounce off each other!

don't think it's us you need to talk to about that one billy

mind you, it'd be a massive boost to ricky, regarding his punch power, when we sparks amir out in sparring
