Enzo Calzaghe wants to train Amir Khan

Post by GazMan85 »

Enzo has been in contact with Khan's team about the possibility of training Amir.

He also states he was contacted back when Khan lost to Prescott!

What you think about this??

I've never really rated Enzo as a trainer and I don't think he'd do much to iron out Khan's defensive deficiencies. In my opinion, Khan should employ Manny Steward, a trainer who is primarily focused on defence, as Khan will need to tighten this up significantly if he wants to go anywhere at world/elite level.

Rat ta tat tat, bish bash bosh !!

Trust me ! Trust me ! Trust me !

(Enzo's corner advice during the Hopkins fight)

- I think it would be a complete car crash of a relationship. Enzo often takes his ball home, and with all the fluffers and back-slappers around Khan, his 'uncles' and flunkies... it would be a complete disaster.

Naturally I would love it to happen, you'd be guaranteed it would kick off !! :OhYes:

Another guy who would be a good trainer for Khan would be Adam Booth. I know Khan and Haye are good friends so it may be a realistic option. Booth would certainly help Khan defensively and strategically.

Interesting shout.

I noticed on Ringside last week, David Haye was giving Khan some great advice & he almost sounded as if he could train Khan & help Amir to correct his flaws.

Maybe Adam Booth might be the man?

I think Amir's close friend 'Saj' has scuppered that.

He was tweeting that "Booth is ment to be a prik" and Booth retweeted it, nonplussed.

I forecast that if it was to happen, Adam would say Amir comes to the gym ALONE.

Khan really needs to separate his personal and professional life. Having all of these arse-licking idiots around must be a constant distraction and is probably just increasing Khan's delusions about himself as an elite pound for pound fighter.

Its a terrible idea. Enzo's one strong point is his fitness training, not something Khan lacks.

I dont think enzo is that bad an idea.....Khan for all his financial success has been a terrible disapointment as a pro when u consider at 17 with hardly any seniors amateur experience he won the Olympic silver medal.

Ideally in my mind from that point he would developed into a terrific counterpuncher, almost like a tommy hearns circa 87-88....even barry mcguigan said that about him in his first fight.....sadly what he has actually emerged as , as a pro, is a guy who fights an amateurish style, that is to say rushes in in a hurry, quick arm punching flurries, herky jerky bouncing in and out, wasting loads of energy....the punch power he had has almost regressed.......a constant obsession with celebrity and talking of being an A lister when he isnt anywhere near a pacquio, bradley,Mayweather ,JMM level.

His youthful exuberance and energy wont last beyond 28 but Im guessing Khan doesnt want to be around that long....

Dont get me wrong he has the heart of a lion, and terrific hand and footspeed....I just think he can be so so much better than he is right now......and that can only happen with a new trainer.

Steward would be a good bet but the same complaint Khan has about Roach would apply with Manny as he also trains the brothers

I dont think Enzo is that bad a trainer.

What Enzo has is an insistance on discipline. his fighters have to do the hardwork, he doesnt let his fighters cut corners. whats his championship fight record, something like 33-2 ? nurture or nature with his son? but he also guided (arguably) limited talents in Rees and Maccarinelli to world titles. Did Cleverly come through the newbridge gym too, and locket?

Its Enzos personality that would clash with Khans hangers on (and maybe khan). For me therin lies the problem. Enzo would demand exactly what Khan thinks he wants; 100% 1-2-1 time.

Unfortuanatly Khan is a poisoned challice. Enzo could take him on, win the first 3 or 4 then along comes Johnny big bomb and KO's him. All of a sudden Enzos sacked, khan was doing this and that wrong, Enzo was alwas shite etc... Training Khan is like managing a the best football team in the world but not being allowed to play a goalkeeper. I think Khan once said in an interview (ref getting hit during fights) "If you go in the shower you're going to get wet" - which is fine but if youre made of sugar you need to stay dry.

Your final sentence sums up why Khan needs a trainer who focuses on defence as it's no good boxing well for the majority of a fight and then getting taken out with one decent shot.

That guy seems to be an absolute tvvat. Who was the young fella he had in the ring with him on Sat night? Similar age to Amir, looked a bit tearful after the fight. Wondered if that was Saj ...

Totally agree. And it seemed as though he had when he first moved to America? The issue reared its head again in past fights.

I didn't say he ever had a power punch. What I said what the power he did have at amateur and early pro level.....has not increased much as he has matured as a proffessional and gone up through the levels. Other aspects of his game have improved but all things being considered he is more of a non puncher now at the level he fights than he ever was.And it isnt just to do with he is fighting better guys now. Its to do with this style he has developed as a pro which isnt too far removed from his amateur style. He simply doesnt know how to stand his ground in a mature fashion and punch and counter.

Did he ever train you marc? Amazed at the stick he gets compared to his record which stands up in uk terms as high as anyone currently in the game. Especially with the catchment area he has / volume of fighter he's been working with. manchester has a bigger population than wales.

He never trained me, so he can't take any credit for my record!haha
But I have been down his gym a few times(watching) and was always impressed, former ABA champ Mark Hughes raved about him at the time, I remember John Kaighin having a real hard time sparring with a novice JC too.
Just look at Pryce, JC, Cleverly, Rees, he brought them all on since they were small children.
Add to that Macca and Lockett, Pryce's 2 brothers were top amateurs too.
All these fighters come from a small town in the Valley's.
Gary Lockett is also developing an exceptional reputation as a trainer too.

Thats the thing. I wasnt sure how far back he went with them all but you can get away with having one exceptional talent from an area that small, but Enzo basically nurtured a generation of Welsh fighters through together.
