Tony Tubbs amateur career

Post by locoxelbox »

Tubbs was a 1979 World Cup champion, lost to Teofilo Stevenson at the 1978 World Championships, fought Greg Page seven times (lost six), got KO'ed by Igor Visotsky and split a pair of bouts with Marvis Frazier. Anyone knows more about his amateur career? How did he do in the 1980 Olympic Trials?

All I could find at the point:

Record: Amateur: 253 fights; 240+, 13-
1978: W.C. Belgrade Heavyweight:
+ Levai (Hon) points
1979: Golden Gloves Heavyweight: 1°
1979: United States Heavyweight: 1°
1979: World Cup New York Heavyweight: 1°
+ Narciso Maldonado (P-R) kot 1
+ Luke Tchoula kot 3
+ Khoren Indzhyan (URSS) points

He skipped the trials because of the risk of a boycut.

When did Tony first come to national prominence on the amateur boxing scene?
