Haye-Chisora : Bad for Boxing

Post by BoxingBarlow »

Well its been a week or so now since this fight that was supposedly 'bad for boxing'.

If this was bad for boxing I reckon we need a lot more 'bad for boxing' events as soon as possible and we might save the sport! Seriously if seeing boxing actually in the papers and hearing people talking about it at cash machines and seeing thousands of people enjoying a great fight live is bad for boxing then god knows whats good for it.

I think the following are actually 'bad for boxing':
Floyd and Pacman not getting it on
The BBC w@nking over andy murray and not even showing highights of world champ british boxers
fights getting cancelled cos boxers failing drug tests (peterson, berto)
fights getting cancelled over bs (gamboa)
diamond belts, platinum belts and million dollar belts
Lazy journalists moralising and not realising the public actually want to see these guys fight for sporting reasons
etc

but not this fight it was quality

The fight itself wasn't bad for boxing. The way it came to fruition however........

Until we all know the precise "fall out" from this, there is no point stating whether it's good, bad, or indifferent for boxing.
As Insider has said it's nothing to do with the fight itself, it's how it came about that is the issue.
Fact is neither of these two would have been anywhere a boxing ring together had it not been for all the bad behaviour prior to.

In my honest opinion, boxers failing drug tests, fighting with loaded gloves and pulling out of fights at short notice due to "an injury" is worse for the sport than two blokes having a punch up at a press conference.

I still have difficulty believing any of the Haye / Chisora hated each other hype. Even if the brawl was spontaenous (which it may well not have been), I believe both fighters realised they were onto something and ran with it to seel the fight big time.

I don't condone the brawl, but I think they made a positive out of it. People that rarely watched boxing were suddenly talking about it. And I squeezed into a fairly large pub to watch the fight, because there were hundreds of people in there wanting to see it. I wonder how many of those watched boxing on a regular, or even semi-regular basis?

The only downside was that a lot of people mistook Chisora getting a shot at Klitschko with Chisora being a world class fighter. Which he's not. He's mediocre, fat and a bit of an idiot. But if his name can be used to sell fights in the future, so be it. I'd like to see Price vs Chisora after Price beats Audley. Del will put up a better fight than Audley, and will give Price a second big publicity fight in a roow.

The pub was packed and everybody was talking about it before and after. Happy days.

Boxing thrives on rivalries, the 'WWE' element if you will.

Ok, the press conference in Munich was pretty wild and unhinged, someone could have got badly hurt that night, but the fact is, look at how much people got interested in the fight after those shenanigans.

The boxers that people remember the most are generally the ones who had rivalries and who could have a good verbal as well, Ali vs Foreman/Frazier, Eubank vs Benn etc etc.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the promoters in boxing seriously need to build up proper rivalries, we need boxers who can speak as well as they fight. There are too many boring boxers coming out with cliched stereotypical responses. I have massive respect for Froch, but he has no rivalries, he gives great respect to his opponents and that's great, but for every goodie there needs to be a baddie.

This aint snooker, it's boxing, people need to believe that the guys don't like each other, in terms of mainstream appeal I believe this to be the case anyways. And that is what boxing has lost, its mainstream appeal. Obviously not all down to rivalries, but the Haye vs Chisora thing just shows what effect that 'beef/rivalry' can have on the wider public in terms of getting them interested in the sport. WWE seem to do pretty well out of it, it's scripted but who cares!

I say more outrageous types like Chisora are needed to play bad guys and then the good guys can get on their high horses and act all disrespected and cry foul play, then beat them up.

Don't diss snooker. It's one of the most exciting sports there is.
