LARRY HOLMES VS GEORGE FOREMAN....
LARRY HOLMES VS GEORGE FOREMAN....
This is a fight which should have taken place many times>..... Holmes of 1978-81 vs Foreman of 1973-74..... Holmes would have too much speed and skill and though he might get dropped on the way I pick Holmes to win a thriller by about 12th round KO!....

Ahhh...if only Holmes had started earlier, this could have been a match for the ages...they were the same age but were primes were several years apart...Foreman knocked out Frazier a couple months before Holmes' first fight...just think how the historical landscape might be different if Larry started when Foreman did...maybe Ali would have had to face Holmes in Africa...maybe Holmes in an 'earlier prime' beats Ali, who might have found it more difficult to take breaks on the ropes against Holmes...
Prime vs. prime, It would be an exciting match up...it would be hard to pick against Larry, an excellent boxer who could extend George into the late rounds and wear him down ala Jimmy Young...I don't see Holmes knocking him out unless Foreman gets so weary he can't stand up...Ali knocked him out with a strategy that wouldn't work for anyone else, I'm not sure a prime Ali would knock out George...he would have fought him totally different, probably a UD while expending a lot more energy...
Holmes in a decision...
the first fight...it might be so good, there would have to be a rematch...

Holmes vs Foreman and other fighters
George Foreman was generally not fighting top-level fighters prior to his fight with Frazier but this does not necessarily indicate that his prime suddenly began when he faced Frazier as oppossed to some time earlier and I would think the same could be true regarding Holmes and the competition he faced.
I think the following would have been interesting matchups
Holmes vs Ali 1975
Holmes vs Foreman 1976-1977
Holmes vs Ron Lyle
Holmes vs Jimmy Young

Its cretins like you who give boxing a bad name... grow up little boy!.
I think this is a good call. I somehow think, however, that Holmes had just enough horsepower that he could take Foreman out late. It wouldn't be a KO per se, but just a gassed Foreman so tired he'd be barely able to defend himself -- i.e. the "Rumble in the Jungle", less Holmes foolishly laying on the ropes. Foreman (version 1) didn't exactly fight the smartest fights. If you could extend him, he slowly digressed from dangerous to less dangerous to there for the taking.Sweet Scientist wrote:Ahhh...if only Holmes had started earlier, this could have been a match for the ages...they were the same age but were primes were several years apart...Foreman knocked out Frazier a couple months before Holmes' first fight...just think how the historical landscape might be different if Larry started when Foreman did...maybe Ali would have had to face Holmes in Africa...maybe Holmes in an 'earlier prime' beats Ali, who might have found it more difficult to take breaks on the ropes against Holmes...

But, for as wide and looping (and even a little slow) as his punches were, Big George had an uncanny ability to get himself in the right punching range. I'm hedging, too, in saying this, but if Foreman caught Holmes and had him hurt, then I think he'd put a real ass kicking on Holmes, because you know Larry would keep getting back up. In that scenario, it'd be similar to the way Foreman trounced Frazier.
After much thought on this one I think Foreman KO's Holmes. I think he could catch him like Shavers or Snipes did and Larry for all his recuperative powers would not be able to finish the fight.
If somehow Foreman does not get to him, there is no way George wins this one on points. So if Larry survives he wins. I am not one of those who thinks that Larry will be standing at the last bell. I just think George will eventually tag him.
I just reviewed the 5 man exhibition in Toronto with George pretty interesting in itself.
George by Mid Round KO.

Holmes TKO 12
horrible stlye matchup for foreman, not only is holmes a great boxer, but he also a great chin and even if foreman hurts him badly, he will have trouble finish holmes. holmes will just stay on the outside popping jabs in foremancs face and letting foreman wear himself out trying to land the big one holmes.
holmes will use his hand speeed to land his punches inside foremans looping bombs and foreman will tire and holmes will hurt him and stop foreman out on his feet late in the fight.
foreman always had trouble with boxers.

Grow up?...I'm probably the same age you are. If not, I wathced Larry Holmes fight B-class fighters when he should have been unifying the belts.silkov wrote:wlvrne wrote:sweetscientist would probably like to be holmes wife, too. how much can one person go on about another?
