Danny Green vs Danny Santiago

Post by jezzamundo »

While we still wait for an undercard to appear, I think it's time for a thread on the main event.

I've just looked at Santiago's record as well as some YouTube footage and I'm feeling a fair bit better about the matchup. At 5'8 1/2" he's a short light heavyweight, but throughout his career he's weighed in the 172-185lb range, making him a natural at the weight. Although he hasn't knocked anyone out since 2006, he does have an impressive 4th round KO of Elvir Muriqi (a guy who was 30-1 at the time and later went on to lose a majority deision to Tarver and went the distance with Clinton Woods) on his record. Watching the footage, he looks to have true knockout power at light heavyweight and the 84kg (185lb) limit for the fight should suit him well. Despite having all five of his losses by KO, he seems to have a decent set of whiskers, having recently gone 9 rounds with WBA light heavyweight champion Beibut Shumenov and previously went 8 rounds with then WBO light heavyweight champion Zsolt Erdei. He's been in the ring with fighters of Danny Green's calibre before and shouldn't be overwhelmed.

On the other side of the coin, I think Santiago was next to ZERO chance of winning a decision against Green, who would have to be completely shot for this fight to be even close on the scorecards. This I base both on his record and the fact that he's a short light heavyweight with short arms and a fairly low punch output.

Ultimately, I think Santiago is an good choice of opponent for Green at this stage of his career coming off two KO losses. If Green wishes to continue his career he will need to win dominantly, winning every round and knocking Santiago out. Any other result or if he has trouble making 84kg, then it's time to hang up the gloves. I only hope that Santiago comes to fight and sticks around for a few rounds.

Why the 84kg(13st, 2lb, 6 1/2oz) limit? I thought the universal cruiserweight limit was 200 lbs (14 stone 4 pounds).

Santiago recently fought for the Lt heavyweight title and Green is trying to get back down to light heavy.

It'll be interesting to see if Green can make 175lb again, seeing as he's 39 and hasn't fought at the weight since 2007, although admittedly he had several fights in the 179-185lb "Dannyweight" range after coming out of retirement. Ultimately Danny Green is a big light heavyweight who walks around at about 190lb between fights, but at Cruiserweight he fought guys like Flores, Tarver and Wlodlarczyk who walk around at 210-220lb and drain down to the 200lb weight limit. Green even admitted that he drank 2 litres of water before weighing in at 195lb against Flores.

Really ordinary undercard, can't see Green wanting to go out like this if he gets past Santiago.

There is no title at stake. It is just a fight at an agreed weight.

under card does look ordinary, on paper, for a Danny Green show, although the main event seems to be well matched. If the undercard is well matched then it's a good show.

I think it's a pretty fair fight for green to take considering he's just lost two in a row. I thought he should have taken a fight like this after his surery before the tarver fight too. Even another fight at this level wouldn't be that bad if he could use it to build himself up again and drop that weight.

Looks like Santiago has come to fight too so let's hope it's a good clash. Still hope greeny knows his head off in the fifth though.

Sounds a bit like that Danny has just given himself a tap on the shoulder:

Main Event usually keep replaying the fight for a few days before releasing it. News programs are showing the knockdowns. At just over 186 pounds Green should have no trouble getting down to light heavyweight.

Unusual card, every fight resulted in a KO or TKO.

Routine for Green. Just needed a run and a win. Will be interesting to see whether he takes up one of the light heavyweight title challenges that have been mooted to be available to him.

Shumenov holds WBA title, short record.

Dawson is WBC Champion but is dropping back to super middle.

Cloud is IBF champion and probably the toughest proposition.

What has Green been offered?
