2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
Well, this forum is certainly a lot quieter than it was four years ago. But it's time to get excited (then possibly agitated and/or depressed) for the Olympics.
The draw is to be released Friday. The Official Olympic site has a very nice boxing section, with photos, heights, and ages for all the boxers (of whom there seem to be a few substitutions).
http://www.london2012.com/boxing/
The actual event kicks off with men's bantamweights and middleweights on Saturday. The women don't commence until August 5. I am able to stream all of the fights live on the internet - I will probably try to score some of the bouts as well. Boxing will be shown on TV in the US on CNBC and Telemundo, with CNBC showing three hours of bouts daily most days.

Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
Will the draw/brackets/matchups be posted anywhere along with the schedule?
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
I dont think we can do much until the draw is known as it is crucial to any assessment.I have done some work for www.untilthenextround.com and will do more in the weeks to come but will try to add to this forum as well.

Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
Since it's not broken down anywhere in one place, here are the men's entrants by age in each weight class. Additionally, I've noted who the top 8 seeds would be based on current AIBA rankings, which I have no idea if they will be used or not.

Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
I believe they may seed two boxers per weight who competed in the WSB.That makes sense as Clemente Russo, for example, has not competed in any ranking tournaments. They will only have two seeds in the womens competition.
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
The draws are now posted. Only had a quick glance so far, but the USA did not get one single easy opening fight. Joseph Diaz will open the Olympics fighting against Ishchenko of the Ukraine.
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
Good grief-what did the USA heavies do to deserve three Russians first up.

Wait but I saw elsewhere that Marcus Browne is fighting Australia???
EDIT: O yea I just checked whoever wins between Browne and Hooper (AUS) faces Mekhontsev
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
Hooper's the top Australian, isn't he? I think Hunter can beat Beterbiev, but then the winner faces Usyk, so... Ramirez has a decent draw, not easy, but he can medal from it. And Rau'Shee has a not easy, but doable medal draw likely to be Oubaali and then Conlan. Diaz got nailed - Ishchenko followed by Lazaro Alvarez and then another tough one - that group is loaded. Joshua opens with Erislandy Savon - greatly interesting first-round matchup in 91+.
On the women's side, Esparza looks in pretty good shape to challenge for at lease a bronze. Queen Underwood got a terrible draw - Jonas and the Katie Taylor just to medal. Shields will likely fight Anna Laurell for a bronze, and then a rematch with Savannah Marshall if she wins.
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
I will say that with the seeding and the spreading of byes, the draws are not nearly as unbalanced as in past years. There are a few easier medal groups, but overall, everyone has a decently tough draw.
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
I presume you cannot access the BBC website from the States.
The BBC is showing every bout live on both Television and Online.

Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
In the US, if you have most cable TV or satellite systems, you can watch every event of the Olympics live online. Events which will be shown on tape delay on broadcast TV will not be repeated. Then we are getting 3-6 hours of boxing a day (3 most days, some live and some taped).
I believe the morning sessions start at 8:30AM EST.
I would be interested to see people's scores if they want to try their hand at judging.

Wow, the US got a crap draw today. On the current scene there is a breakdown on the draw for the US in a thread on the London Olympics...http://boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f ... 8#p3330498

Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
Emile,
Did you make your predictions after the draw? After '08 I have not kept up with who is doing what on the international level but I am surprised you have the Korean Shin Jonghun winning over Zou Shiming. What has Jonghun done? Shiming always looks good when I have seen him. Interesting you don't have Beterbiev or Hunter medaling at 91 kgs who face each other 1st round.

Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
Hi J, yeah I did this after the draw, and I didn't spend a lot of time looking at past results, because I doubt doing so would make my choices any better. I think maybe Jong is a weak choice - he got silver at the 2011 WCs, but he is probably less likely to repeat that than other fighters. However he is 23, the Light Flyweight top fighters are mostly surprisingly old - Zou is 31 and age should not be in his favor against younger still improving fighters. Is he good enough to win anyway despite being past his best? Probably, but I could see someone else beating him out here. His QF group is really stacked too - Zhakypov, Veitia, Barriga, Cappai - he might have a tough time getting to the final.
At 91 - the winner of Hunter-Beterbiev faces Usyk, who I like against either one. I think Beterbiev is clearly past his peak. In fact, I think this Russian team is not all that great. I have them with 4 medals, but I wouldn't be shocked if they got even less than that.
In looking at the field, it's amazing how many Dagestanis are in there. At least half of the Azeri team are from there, and so are several of the Russian team. Dagestan has fewer people than Puerto Rico, so maybe they can make their bid some day to be the new per capita boxing mecca.

Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
Emile has USA winning 4 medals while Mike has USA winning 5 medals. That would be a huge improvement over 2008. 5 medals out of 12 would be doing fairly well.
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
Joseph Diaz Jr won the first bout of the Olympics vs Ukraine via score of 19-9. Diaz looked very good. Congrats!!!

Loved the opening session especially the Thapa/Valdez fight.Diaz and Nevin looked classy.
Ogogo looked a little tense and O Neill looked comfortable.
Evening session about to start.

Terrell Gausha's fight was one of the most entertaining Olympic matches I've seen in some time. I like this change in scoring system.
