On the US broadcast, they said Gausha was ahead 6-4 at the end, so he would have won by 1 point anyway.

Lucky - it could have been messy otherwise.emile wrote:On the US broadcast, they said Gausha was ahead 6-4 at the end, so he would have one by 1 point anyway.
What the heck are they using as a bell? a plastic hubcap?
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
They had to do something after the last two Olympics. The scoring system was killing amateur boxing. I only got to see the Diaz bout today which was exciting. In Beijing, rarely did two boxers stand there and bang and when they did, the crowd would go carzy. Lets hope they keep this up and amateur boxing wins back some fans.Kolya wrote:Terrell Gausha's fight was one of the most entertaining Olympic matches I've seen in some time. Richie Woodhall on BritishTV said the bell sounded like a bottle being broken and he said it has to go.If Gausha can harness his speed correctly he can do well. The Pros will show him, its just experience but he is a talent, blinding speed .
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
I hear Golden boy and CBS are in London hoping to sign the US team to pro contracts and show case them on CBS after the Olympics, probably trying to get a jump on AIBA to keep them from signing them to the APB. They are also looking to sign other boxers from outside the US.

Wasnt Freddie Roach involved with the US team-I can see him taking a couple on.
If Joshua wins gold there could be a bidding war.

Freddie was removed when he was caught on youtube bad mouthing Michael Hunter as lazy. He was only there because the head of the USOC is friends with Roach's agent and they thought it would look good for USA to have him involved.mike222 wrote:Wasnt Freddie Roach involved with the US team-I can see him taking a couple on.

Evans look good today for GB beating the Algerian boxer.
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
I'm surprised that nobody has Gausha winning a medal. I think he has a fair chance. I know he has Vijender Singh next but I think he has a decent shot at winning that bout.
I also think that Hunter will defeat Beterbiev in his opening round bout. Hunter will be too quick for the Russian. Hunter also is used to the power punches of the super-heavies and heavies so Beterbiev's power will not affect him. The next bout against Usyk will be much tougher for Mike.
Based upon the draw, the best medal hopes for Team USA are: Raushee Warren, Marlen Esparza, Errol Spence, Terrell Gausha, Claressa Shields and Jose Ramirez.
The USA boxers with the tougher draws have a much lower chance at winning medals but in my opinion Hunter has the next best chance followed by Herring, Browne, Underwood, Diaz and Breazale. However, that ranking was before the bouts yesterday and I would say Diaz impressed me and has now moved up in odds a little. Facing the Cuban world champion next is still a daunting task. If Diaz wins that bout, he has another tough one in the next bout to get to a medal.
I am really hoping that Team USA wins at least the 5 medals that Mike predicted. Getting back to winning at least one gold and a total of at least 3 medals is critical for amateur boxing in the United States.

Great stuf fguys
From reading the above I presome Zou is in the same half as Barriga?
Still may take 66/1 about him? Value? (First 2 1/3 odds)

Jose Ramirez vs Azzedine was a great, exciting fight. More fights like that and amateur boxing in the Olympics will make a resurgence.
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
I was surprised that Ramirez lost the 3rd round. I had him winning it by a couple of points. I guess it doesn't matter as the right guy won the bout whether it was by the 1 point the judges had or by 4 like I had it.
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
Great fight by Ramirez. The boxing in London so far is a huge step up from the debacle in Beijing in general, and for the US team in particular. The guys are performing great over there.

I haven't been able to watch much this weekend, but it sounds like the tournament is going over well so far. Good to hear, although I'm sure we'll get some controversies as we go along. I've only heard questionable decisions so far in Dogboe-Shimizu and Taylor-Conceicao. Any others?
Lost three of my predicted medallists already.
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
I dont think there have been bad decisions, certainly some close ones which could be down to the judges discretion. As Richie Woodhall commentating said the judges are a lot closer than us and can see and hear things we cant.
The Americans are great value not a duff bout yet.
I do get annoyed when the Commentators refer to the AIBA rankings which they do constantly eg trying to build the Chadi/Keles bout as a battle between the World number 3 and 4 which patently they are not.

That's definitely one thing I'll say is great about this US team and makes me really proud to watch them-they're bringing the fight and going hard all 3 rounds. Ramirez came out smoking in that 3rd round.
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
Team USA is 4-0 but they were all bouts that I thought they would win. Now they need to win some bouts that I don't expect them to win. It is great to see them win some tough bouts which they didn't do very often in Beijing. Next up is Marcus Browne vs Damien Hooper. This is a very tough bout and a true test for Team USA. I am hopeful that Marcus will win this one.
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
Tuesday Jamel Herring needs to defeat Kazakh boxer to keep the USA streak going (assuming Browne wins tomorrow). The first bout that Team USA is not expected to win is Wednesday's Diaz vs Cuban Alvaraz bout. That would be amazing if Diaz wins that one. Also on Wednesday Hunter v Beterbiev is a tough bout but one that I think Hunter should win. Breazeale vs Omarov is a bout most don't expect Breazeale to win. Another big victory if he can pull off the upset.
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
Thursday, Team USA has Jose Ramirez vs Uzbek's Gaibnazarov which is a tough bout for Ramirez. I don't expect the Uzbek boxer to stay in front of Ramirez as much which will make it a little more difficult. I don't always agree with Teddy Atlas but I do think Ramirez has to use his jab more to win the bout on Thursday. He needs to close the distance with his jab. I do like Ramirez in the bout though and wouldn't be surprised at all with a victory.
2nd bout for Team USA on Thursday is Gausha vs Singh. Again not an easy bout, but one that I think Gausha can win. This would be a big victory for Team USA if Gausha wins.
Friday, Raushee Warren will win in spectacular fashion. Spence will defeat his Indian opponent. 2 for 2 on Friday. Anything less will be a disappointment.
Saturday, assuming Jamel Herring wins his first bout, he will face winner of Spain vs Iran. This is a bout that Herring should win and therefore must win. Team USA can't lose these type of bouts.
Assuming Browne wins his first bout, he will face Mekhontsev. Defeating Mekhontsev would be considered a big upset and would really show that Team USA is doing great in London.

I wouldnt expect too much from the USA team, for the most part they are very young facing boxers with much greater experience.I would expect much more from the British team who have been around a bit.

When does Anthony Joshua kick off? V Excited about him, he looks like he could be the real deal.
Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
Of course I expect more out of the home country's team. There is always a bias towards the host country and they win more medals than they normally do. GB does have some good boxers but they will likely win more medals than they would have had the Olympics been in Chicago. If the Olympics were in Chicago, Team USA would have won more medals than they will in London.mike222 wrote:I wouldnt expect too much from the USA team, for the most part they are very young facing boxers with much greater experience.I would expect much more from the British team who have been around a bit.

For those other who lost live feed on NBC, Browne was ahead 6-5 after two, but gave up huge 3rd round(8-5) to loss 13-11 to Hooper from Australia.

Hooper really outhustled Browne in that last round...I could be jumping the gun but Browne looked defeated, he may have ran outta gas from him moving so much in the first 2 rounds...he never found a way to really attack Hooper...he was winning off mostly counters and exchanges at times...
Hooper let it all hang out in the 3rd round, standing 8, ripping Browne wit good shots along the ropes...I don't think Browne likes it much on the inside, he isn't polished in that realm...
I knew Marcus was gonna have a good opponent cuz Hooper gave the #1 guy Cruz from Cuba a good fight, he wasn't coming to lay down...
Good thing for Marcus is I think he has a pro style which should take him places(despite the constant movement he's shown in the Olympics)...but I've yet to see him bite down on his mouthpiece and just fight when the going gets tough...only time will tell if he has it in him...

Re: 2012 OLYMPIC GAMES LONDON - Schedule and Results [R]
First loss for Team USA - Marcus Browne. I didn't predict Browne to win a medal especially due to his tough draw. Hooper followed by Mekhontsev is brutal. The boxers who must win and get medals are Warren, Esparza, and Spence then we need another medal or two out of Gausha, Shields and Ramirez. Then if Hunter, Herring, Underwood, Diaz or Breazeale can win a medal that would be great. 6 medals from the 12 USA boxers in London would be an accomplishment, especially if at least one is gold.
