Whatever happaned to old scrap iron?

He was a very exciting British level tv fighter - no concept of defense, a dodgy chin that would make Herbie Hide shake his head in disgust, and a punch like a ton of bricks.

Also his ring entrnace song, any old iron, was possibly worse than Tony Oakey`s song.

I remember watching him when he was being brought up with averge opponents to the night where he almost killed Ross Hale in one round in december 1995.

What did he do after that? What is he up to now? Do you think he would be more successful today?

I wasn`t thinking about the passing of Lavender Johnson when i posted that last night. Disrespect was not my intention.

10 bells were given last night for Johnson at the Matchroom show in Manchester.

Although it was a full house, it was complete silence as the bell sounded.

Last time I saw him was about four years ago, he was doing voluntary work at some old people's home. Some character, wrecked Ross Hale's career essentially. Ross was in the frame for a big money fight when he met him. Thaxton KO was one of those superslomo replays that Hollywood couldn' reconstruct any better.

Then there was the classic post fight interview after he'd won following a spell when he'd been inactive. Think it was with Adam Smith. Remember Scrap had a stint in the clink...

Paul is and was indeed a great character, he was an exciting fighter who when he started boxing turned his life around and never got back in trouble with the police or anything else.

In prison they had broken his left arm 4 times and he could never straighten it properly, which is why he became a switch hitter.

He was 22 and 0 when he left the old man with 20 KO's, sometimes people have to move on to find new things for themselves.

Hubbie did his corner for the Thaxton fight as his trainer at the time wouldnt do it for him, after being together for all that time it was very painful for them both that night.

Paul is now happily married with twins on the way and is working in private security, he is doing great and still attends the odd boxing show.

I remember Paul talking about this on a mini-feature SKY did on him in his hayday as a fighter. I seem to recall he got into a fight with some of the 'screws' and got his arm broken. He then said he remembers sitting in his cell looking out of his window in tears and making a promise to himself that when he got out he word turn his life around.

Paul is now happily married with twins on the way and is working in private security, he is doing great and still attends the odd boxing show.

Good to hear he is doing well and leading a productive and happy life.

I was gutted for Paul Ryan when he got KO'd by Thaxton

I was sitting in a mates having a drink or 3 and the Ryan/Hale fight was starting and people were asking me who'd win, I was givin it "Rooster, Rooster" Great to watch though and good to hear he's doing well.

I don't remember all the details but I remember Ryan getting caught and his legs were all over the shop, think the commentators said Palomino wasn't a big puncher & was from a weight class or two below Ryan and that was what was alarming about him getting so badly shook up

I have the palomino fight on tape and it should have been stopped for sure - Ryan was down twice and his eyes were rolling about in his head.

In the later rounds he cornered Palomino and hit him with a few good shots and the ref jumped in abit prematurley.

Cracking fight though.

Actually His Elusiveness. From about His 7th Fight, He was very Hard to Hit. At the palomino Fight, He was in a Marital Crisis Big Time. Tried to pull Him out, but He needed the money. He had some very good Results, against good Fighters, mainly as a counter Puncher.

The Last time I saw Scrap Iron was in 2009 Just before the ABA London Final vs Dudley O'Shaughnessy and Erick Ochieng (what a cracker!)
They was an urgument in the crowd with this guy from Canning Town shouting at an older gentlemen. Ryan got up went to the younger guy, a few words exchanged and then POP! Ryan hit him with a right he was on the ground and Ryan got the biggest cheer of the day and that was a nice starter for the fight with Ochieng and O'Shaughnessy.
