I'm no swimming expert but imho it's more about technique than anything else.

I'm no expert either - I only swim when I'm away on holiday, as a means of keeping my fitness up. I tend to alter my stroke when I'm feeling gassed. I always try and concentrate on crawl at a reasonable pace, and when I need a breather switch to breast stroke at whatever pace is comfortable. I'll switch back to crawl when I've regained my breath. Works for me.

Front crawl I guess?
Try swimming with a pull buoy between your legs. this means you don't have to kick. Most beginners will kick too hard, as that's the bit they can easily do. The kick portion of the front crawl stroke provide little propulsion but will take lots of oxygen (hence you getting out of breath).
If the pull buoy works, don't get too dependant on it. Just learn to switch off your kick a little. You can always kick harder when you're more confident/comfortable.
