Boxers who weren't great when you met them...

Often read posts stating I met such and such, he was great. But has any poster here had a bad experience meeting a boxer past or present?

Personally I've not. But I do remember a poster on ESB (allegedly, but I believe it to be true) going to buy Calzaghe Hopkins tickets from Joe himself in the gym. Joe sold them for over face value stating "everyones doing it on e-bay so why shouldn't I" - can't confirm as it wasn't me but I'm sure some posters on here can confirm this story is true.

Notable mentions - Michael Gomez is unhinged. Eamon magee, whilst pleasent, is one scary fornicator.

I have met Joe and he was little stand-offish, but polite. Just seemed a quiet bloke. The rest have all been great. Never met Gomez, but seen him about and yes, the guy has certainly got issues...He never did anything wrong, apart from nearly collapsing into everyone in the arena the night Ricky won the title!

It's the general consensus round South Wales to be honest. I was in Smiths in Newport reading Boxing News and Joe came in to pick one up. Another guy was buying a boxing mag at the same time and asked Joe to sign in it. By Joe's reaction you'd think the guy had just asked to shag his wife.

I've met his ex-wife Mandy a couple of times. I worked at Carphone Warehouse at the time and she got her phones from there. She on the other hand is one of the nicest down to earth people you could ever meet. I get talking to her about Joe's career and fights and was happy to spend 20-30 mins chatting each time we met. And although she was his ex at the time, she didn't bad mouth him once. The only thing she did say that made me laugh was that although he's listed as 6" and likes to tell people that, he's actually 5"11!

Yes Eamon Magee is quite scary but was at the bar with him and ref Ritchie Davis in Birmingham a couple of years back, and his just a quiet, ordinary fella tbh.

Waited for hours with alot of other naz fans at the Britannia hotel in docklands for the naz v boom boom Johnson final press conference, when it was over he blanked everyone, jumped into his yellow ferrari 355 and wheel spinned off ! Very pissed off at the time, but actually had a friend pick him up in a taxi recently in london and said what a nice bloke he was, maybe he was just a rude arrogant twat when he was younger !

Met Robbie Regan (remember him) at a function once and he was steaming and acting the fool. Really showed himself up. Nicky piper and Steve Robinson were there blatantly embarrassed for him.

Not aimed at you jessi- just a general observation. I keep things to myself with regards to my thoughts on certain people in boxing. But it's not always the consensus I've found, and I get on with nearly everyone I meet.

Yes - Nicky Piper was very friendly and polite to my wife and I the couple of times we met him.
Robbie Regan ... is just Robbie Regan..
When he was boxing well he was a quiet type fella when first met him.
Then it was the whole 'here's a Robbie Regan calling card' ... At the pub!
As for Joe Calzaghe - lots of stories to tell there ... Not exactly the local hero in many of them too.

Very true. Some people are standoffish because they have insecurities rather than being arseholes. They need to get to know a person before they can act all pally with them.

That said, I've probably met over 150 boxers and less than five of them would fall into the arse category. Out of all the people in boxing there's only two people I actually dislike.

Its the same old though, is'nt it? I was a child when i got Lennox's autograph at Hull City Hall and he was great. Seen him at the Klitschko-Haye weigh in and you would have needed to beat up about ten security to get to say hello. Its the same with Ricky. Is it the fighter, or the people around them?

In defence of Joe Calzaghe, who I am no fan of, I did a day's filming with him once and he was a lovely fellow - at least that day with me. Seemed quite relieved that there was a boxing freak there to talk to. Chatted all day about virtually all of his fights, being in the ring with Roy Jones and Hopkins, fights where he broke his hands, Eubank, Bika etc, then Froch and some upcoming fights. Had a great old chinwag with him and at the end of it he posed for a mean faceoff picture with me, both holding our fists up. Doesn't get much sweeter than that.

That being said I met him briefly before one time where he seemed to be swaggering around in a stand offish mood, think he was nervous as he was about go on TV and be interviewed with his dancing girlfriend. Didn't like the look of him that time, but he downed a glass of red in one and was cordial and self effacing when I very briefly spoke to him that time. So again, I can't say anything bad about the man.

I guess every time Joe goes out the door in Wales though he must be hassled - by people who made him rich in fairness - but I can see how it would begin to irritate over a long period of time.

My younger cousin in Mansfield would often see Naz pull up in his Porche / Ferrari on his cul-de-sac when him and his mrs would come to visit her sister.

He was at the peak of his fame, but would have a kick around for ages with the lads on the street until it was time for their tea.

Her sister was a nurse at Kings Mill Hospital in Mansfield, a young lad nicknamed 'Buster' was very ill with cancer. He was a lovely kid in the same year as my cousin. Naz went in one day to lift his spirits and they became good pals. Naz would going in regular to see him and would bring him stuff and they'd chat for hours.

When he made his American debut, he offered to pay for Buster and his dad to come over ringside for it. 1st class and everything. But sadly Buster's health was failing him and he sadly died not long after aged about 17 or something.

Naz was a pallbearer of his coffin and stood and made a speech in church for him. He later went on to be a patron for Children's cancer charities for a while.

It was terrible when Naz hit that bloke and then ran off, but there are other sides to him.

Met Mike Tyson a few years ago. He was very polite and pleasant towards me but came across as completely unhinged, couldn't sit still for 2 seconds, was jumping around the room telling a story which involved Jake Lamotta and threatening to cut some one up - I couldn't follow the story as he was that hyped up. There was lots of nervous laughing from the events organisers.

Also met Tim Witherspoon on the same night who was having a whale of a time mingling with everyone and having photos taken etc.

Yep, at his trial a lot of letters were submitted about his unknown charity work, some of it quite moving.

Quite rightly though, the judge discounted it all and basically said 'I'm giving you as much time as I'm allowed to...if I could give you more, I would.'
