Kid Gavilan vs Gil Turner
Kid Gavilan vs Gil Turner
I had heard about this fight for many years, but watched it yesterday for the first time, and it was a tremendous fight. Any thoughts.

One of my favorite fights to watch . . too bad there is no sound. Turner was a force of nature; a whirlwind who just never stopped coming forward and throwing combinations from hell. But Gavilan proved his greatness but sucking it up and eventually cutting Gil down. Turner went on to beat some good fighters but was never the same fighter again, especially as he began having problems making 147 but wasn't big enough for the top middleweights, as his stint at 160 showed . . .a junior middleweight division at 154 would've been perfect for him.

What impressed me about Kid Gavilan was that he had so much in the way of ring skills which you don't see at the present time. Of course, it would be nearly impossible to acquire such skills without facing many good opponents or having a very experienced boxing trainer.

In many other eras Turner probably could have been the champ for a few years. Of course Gavilan was one of the greats.

That was perhaps the great Kid Gavilan's most defining fight. Probably his finest hour. What a fight. Gil Turner WAS NEVER THE SAME after that fight. And Turner at the time he fought Gavilan was undefeated or lost one fight. Something like that.
