Try reading his stuff you may actually learn something about the business.
He regularly says it like it is and gives guys like Gary Shaw & Goossen heat because they are television packagers, which they pretty much are. He did a similar thing with Ross Greenburg.
While the twitter argument may not put him in a great light amongst Brits who dont know him have a look at his articles I promise you'll have far more insight into the boxing world than you will from reading 99% of the other articles about.

Haha not so much hero dude just telling you that he gets the news before anyone else. His pieces are very good, well written and insightful. If it's not your thing then that's cool.
I know another American writer Dan Rafeal also gets some heat on here. Over there they do things different and are more brash and I get that many Brits dont appreciate that.

Sorry to be harsh but you sound like you hero worship this guy like he is some kind of demi-God, he has a good directory of contacts, knows all the soundbites and a big gob, but, that's it. His writing is nothing special.
He is over rated as a writer and his voice on the radio would go through you - its like he is hyperventilating. Just because he has a direct line to the big promoters he gets scraps of info and namedrops/tweets. So what?
As for Dan, he has been shown to rip off the work off others and passes it off as his own without acknowledging anyone. He too, talks down to boxers like they are a piece of dirt. I read on twitter (only because someone Retweeted him/same as Kim's tweets) he called Irish boxer, Tommy Tolan 'a stiff'. Maybe you like that kind of brash style, but I find it repulsive and no different to some of lunies on the general forum on esb.
By the way, do any of the promotional companies or their associates sponsor maxboxing?

As I say personally I appreciate his writing, I know and have known Steve for several years and can vouch for the guy. I know he upset people with his twitter tif with Barker who I also know, have written several times.
What I was pointing out is he is well thought of through out the industry and that a lot of people on here are bashing and him.
Getting the info first hand kind of proves that you're a good source and people know and respect you. You think anyone can pick up the phone and call Richard Scheafer, HBO etc
Out of interest who do you consider to be good writers?
Re: Steve Kim (maxboxing) attacks Darren Barker
As I said, having access to big names in itself is not something that impresses me and besides the likes of Kim, Raphael etc are very useful mouthpieces for these promotional companies.
Favourite writers? There are so many. My all time favourite is easily - Budd Schulberg, he always cautioned that there was a big difference between a good writer and a good boxing writer - but he was both. He also said, that a writer has two main responsibilities - to be accurate (unbiased) and entertaining (or else no one reads your reports or articles).
Other writers that I like are Dave Anderson, Don McRae, Graham Houston, Glyn Leach (not just saying that), Ron Borges, Bob Mee, Steve Farhood, Springs Toledo....

I don't know the geezer from adam, but a pound to a pinch of shit says he's a mediocre writer with contacts. There's bucket loads of those in boxing. It isn't a difficult thing to achieve. Most of them just want to get their opinions across rather than offer any real insight.
He was just trying to give himself a lob on by winding Barker up, which makes him a bit of a wanker in my book.
Bob Mee had it spot on earlier (and he's a proper writer).

And his voice... It goes through me and it's a commonality throughout the comments on YouTube. He sounds like he's about to cry. The guy is an arsehole who I've already devoted too much time to. fornicate him, and fornicate his boxing site that I've never heard of and will now take great pains to avoid.
Re: Steve Kim (maxboxing) attacks Darren Barker
I'll be honest ,I think Darren has done really well here, of that were me I'd of tore into him good and proper! I'd of then made it my business to tell him what I thought of him to his face too! No need for him to talk about a fighter like that! Especially one like Darren! He's an honest hard working pro! He's trying to belittle his achievements and I'll be honest that really really annoys me! Ego maniac who thinks he's important! He forgets to say that without these fighters he's calling he'd have no job! Idiot! ![[icon_witsend.gif] :witzend:](./images/smilies/icon_witsend.gif)

I know he does, he pretty much mentions it or hints it in everything he writes ( "..I'm hearing Marquez v blah blah could be headed for sep 12th etc )El Raincoat wrote: Steve speaks with the top guys at HBO, Showtime, Top Rank & Golden Boy.
I've followed Kim since his House of boxing days, back in 2000 or so, which then morphed into the formely excellent Maxboxing, along with the Dougie Fisher.
But since Dougie tragically sold out and went to work for Goldenboy ( and HOW he must be regret that now ) Maxboxing went down hill big time. Kim must have been devastated, as he and Fisher were pretty must best mates, and a great team.
So Kim hires Montoya, who really isn't a patch on Fisher, and Kim's ego has gone OUT OF CONTROL. He's fired writers who only mildly disagreed with him ( eg Raskin ) and all the best writers have left ( Katz, Thomas Gerbasi ) .
I tried following Kim on Twitter, and lasted about 2 days. Many of his posts are spiteful attacks on anyone who doesn't agree with him, and basically, he's turned into a complete dick. Shame really, as he used to be a good writer, funny too. But now he's just a parody of his former self. There's no way he'd ever say any of that stuff to Barker's face, and that pretty much says it all.

agree with this on all counts, used to love House of Boxing/Maxboxing back in the day, Kim was good with Fisher, but it's horrible now, visit once a year and am always disappointed

Good grammar does not equal a good read and throw in some name-dropping gargantuan ego's and its very tedious indeed.
And yet none can hold a candle to Thomas Hauser, a remarkably pleasant man when I've emailed him to talk about stuff.
I can read his articles for hours, one after the other. Only last night I read his story again, where he got Ali to sneak him into the White House.
No ego, no temper - just a great story teller.

To his face? Let's say, Steve Kim said the same things to Mike Tyson back in the day...we all know Steve Kim would now be in hospital with no teeth & a broken jaw...if he was lucky.

Steve Kim is a douchebag but one thing about him is that he knows boxing.

Don't know too much about him but he sounded like an immature dick with Barker there. Not very professional for a journalist.
