quarry-norton
Considering norton refused to even spar with quarry after getting his ass whipped at the main st gym and wouldnt fight him until quarry was WELL past his prime despite it being a natural match in cali. Norton wanted no part of quarry so its hard to say norton was the better man.

Why did this get broken out into a seperate thread? I posted this under the Quarry-Ellis thread... strange.

Is there a rent-a-ho.com?

For a 60 year old man you seem rather sordid. The epitome of a dirty old man it would seem.yancey wrote:I hate to even think of the places this nut job might be going in pursuit of "true love".Giancarlo wrote:Lucky for me then that I don't come here to find true love.A Simpleton wrote:Yes, now that GI is gone you are loved by everyone but yancey. Still, I suppose sleeping with a laminated picture of Joe rather than a real woman has a negative affect on the mind over time.
Re: quarry-norton
Interesting that this got it's own thread, I did not do it, but am happy to chime in.
IMHO, Quarry beats Norton 7 or 8 out of 10. Prime for Prime. Klompton is right, Norton tortured Quarry with a bit of vengeful retribution for those days when Quarry was quite superior and handed Norton his arse in the gym. But Norton knew that time favored him heavily when they met. It would never have ended like that when both were at the peak of their game. I would bet pretty freely on Quarry, and be happy to collect Giancarlo's match money.
On the day they did fight, I bet on Norton....sadly, but knew full well that the times called for it. Always bet with your mind, never your heart! I bet once on emotion.....Lacy over Calzaghe.......ouch!

Buzz, where and when did this "arse-handing" occur?
Give me a few background details.

Read Klompon's contribution on this subject.....are you questioning the authenticity or querying the time frame?
Or asking for document reference?

Now why am I surprised there is no actual beef in your reply.
You know what I'm asking Buzz.
The gym and a bit of background to how/when the handing of the arse actually occurred.
(I'm not disputing it happened as I seem to recall something being posted by one of the real guys from the California thread along those lines, just suggesting that you, once again, are forgetting your junior boxing historian training and not citing references (and Bazza was around the other day too!))
If you don't fess up, I am gonna sadly have to assume you know as much about it as the late unlamented Irene.

He does his homework, so you can write your cliff notes.

Re: quarry-norton
Well I found one mention by Rick Farris, but not the one I remember.....
Tom . . . I understood what you were saying, and I wanted to point out that Mike's transformation was slow, as in most cases, but I believe it began with this fight.
Although Mike had never been knocked down in a bout prior to this one, he had hit the canvas in the gym when trading with brother Jerry on several occasions.
Jerry was moody and and mean, two good qualities in his case. I watched Jerry upend Ken Norton, and a number of sparring partners over the years.

That's the one!

Re: quarry-norton
That's a Tough fight, I'd give Holmes a slight edge, though I'd be pulling for Jerry. Quarry was a small HW but outperformed his weight by quite a bit. IMHO. But Holmes? At his peak? Maybe not.
Re: quarry-norton
Holmes was all wrong for Quarry. Jerry would have had more of a chance vs. prime Tyson, or almost anyone else.BoxBuzz wrote:That's a Tough fight, I'd give Holmes a slight edge, though I'd be pulling for Jerry. Re: quarry-norton
Could you give me specifics on this? Why do the styles so favor Quarry? Do you see this as a similar match up to Ali? I often think of Holmes and Ali as having some similarities. I think of Holmes as being a bit sharper skilled overall, and Ali as being more athletic. I think Ali was faster with (footwork and handspeed) and their defenses as being similar in effectiveness, but not in style.hhaehre wrote:Holmes was all wrong for Quarry. I tend to look at fighters psyche, ring generalship, tenacity, strategic skills, and endurance.. But I do struggle with understanding clearly the fundamental advantages one fighter may have over another based on their clinical fighting skills. (Once they have met a certain threshold of quality regardless of overall "style".)
For example: Whitaker and Chavez, I recognize clearly they have vast differences, but don't see one as being naturally advantageous over the other. And it proved that though Whitaker clearly beat him, Chavez's skills did not let him down, or particulary embarrass him. It was rather competitive.
I'm not trying to draw comparisons between these matchups. But I don't think in the physical 3D mode well. And am trying to get a better handle on what I think Dempseyfire, and Saad do seem to focus on. (Though astoundingly their is much they disagree about in this area).
Re: quarry-norton
Yes, absolutely. Jerry was at his best when guys, preferably plodding sluggers, came at him and he could choose his spots and counter punch. He liked slow guys over fast guys and he handled power much better than speed. Holmes was good defensively, had an excellent jab that would bother Quarry and Jerry would not be able to hurt him much. I really don't see how Quarry could outpoint Holmes and even less how he could knock Larry out. The way I see this fight unfolding Jerry would have to press the action but he would eat jabs and right hands all night and the bigger Holmes would tie him up on the inside. Quarry would certainly land some good hooks but not enough in numbers and not hard enough to really bother Holmes. I see Holmes halting a busted up Quarry on a tko around the 10th.BoxBuzz wrote:Could you give me specifics on this? Why do the styles so favor Quarry? Re: quarry-norton
IMO this was Norton's best fight outside of the Ali trilogy. I read his book GOING THE DISTANCE last night and can say it was interesting.

I agree. Holmes would have been a terrible style matchup for Quarry.
