HARTLEPOOL’S FINEST ON ‘HUNTER’S LAST STAND’
Three of Hartlepool’s finest will step into the ring on Phil Jeffries next promotion – ‘Hunter’s Last Stand’ - at the town’s Borough Hall on September 30.
With Jeffries looking to take boxing all over the region during the coming year, North East fight fans may witness veteran Michael Hunter, in his 34th fight, make his last ring appearance in his hometown. The former British and European super-bantamweight champion, as well as one-time world title challenger, will be having his second comeback fight as he embarks on this, the last return of his career. Hunter, who turned pro way back in 2000, beat Sid Razak last time out at the Borough Hall in March after a two year absence from the game, and will need another victory to prove he still has something left to give.
If Peter Cope can follow in Hunter’s footsteps then he will end up having a very good career. In just his sixth bout, the unbeaten prospect put in a gutsy performance on the ‘Summer Rumble 2’ bill at the Stadium of Light in July to claim the International Masters super-bantamweight crown. In that fight, ‘Copey’ faced down the challenge of the division’s tough gatekeeper, Redcar’s Gavin Reid, and re-enforced the notion that he has a very bright future, and some exciting fights, ahead of him. Expect the roof to be raised when Peter walks to the ring on his home patch at the Borough Hall, with the 21 year old sure to be roared on by his huge support – the ‘Barmy Army’.
Also appearing on July’s ‘Summer Rumble’ show was Callum Winton. The 20 year old made his debut on that bill, drawing with Steve Martin in a fight that many had him edging. At the Borough Hall on September 30, in his second pro bout, Winton will again walk to the ring to the tune of ‘Blue Moon’ in tribute to his boxing idol – Ricky Hatton. The pair share the love of a good body shot, and Callum will look to land plenty as he battles for his first win.
“Hartlepool’s a great boxing town, and there’s been some terrific nights at the Borough Hall with Michael Hunter over the years,” stated Jeffries. “This show could well be the last time that Michael boxes in Hartlepool, so it’s a chance for the fans to come and watch him in action at this great boxing venue.
“Peter Cope was in the fight of the day against Gavin Reid at the Stadium of Light. It was 10 rounds of non-stop action, and he showed real maturity and mettle against a tough opponent. I really think Peter has the ability to go places and it’s great that so many fans are following him on his journey. Callum was unlucky to lose last time out, but he’s got a quick opportunity to put that right now in front of his home crowd. With three local fighters on this bill, plus the headline fights, this is a show that people are really looking forward to and we’re expecting a full house.”
Headlining ‘Hunter’s Last Stand’ will be County Durham’s Martin Ward vs. Liverpool’s Mike Robinson for the English bantamweight title; while chief support will be Fishburn’s Gary Fox vs. Darlington’s Neil Hepper for the Northern Area light-welterweight belt. Also appearing will be Horden’s unbeaten Greg O’Neill in his third pro bout.
