Hi Derry.

Whilst we acknowledge that the fight hasn't happened yet, as a promoter we want to let Chris develop his skills and his strength, and build a career on his own terms. In the last few months he has fought Carl Johanneson and nearly beaten him (he did according to some) and been sparring with Ricky Burns (performing admirably), and will now fight a southpaw with good skills. This is all about leaving him in a position to attack the top of the division when he is ready.

Chris is only 23. If Chris fought you he may well beat you (that isn't an insult, you know how much personal and professional respect I have for you). but even if he did he would be at the top table, with the top names coming at him right away. Look at Kevin Anderson when he won a title too early, you stop developing and just survive, trying to keep the title. Then before you know it you it you have lost the title and are where you were three years ago

There are plenty of guys who will want Chris now, because insiders know how good he will turn out to be. They will want him as a good name. We will not be damaging his growth by sticking him in a line of 50/50 fights against the top boys. Let's get something straight, if he continues to develop at the rate he is going, and gaining real experience, by the time he fights these boys, the fights won't be 50/50.

We have things in place for the end of the year, but won't disrespect Kiss by mentioning it here...one job at a time.

Cheers Derry, and good luck in Prizefighter

Kieran Farrell would have been a good fight, both same sort of level. That was turned down also.

Very level fight that Dave as you say. But as I said, we are letting him develop as a fighter, and sticking him in a 50/50 fight on an away show , straight after the war with Carl Johanneson wouldn't be the right way to develop him. We are doing this for the benefit of our lad, and the fights we have lined up are going to be competitive, yet bring him on a bucketload.

I can see the Farrell v Goodwin fight being inevitable in the future, but both our boys will have come on a load by then, and it won't be a fight hidden away on your show without TV.

He's had 17 fights and one 50/50. I just didnt think that an English Title fight against Farrell was too big a step for a kid like that.
But like you say, no good for your man to be 'hidden away' on some non tv show eh.
Good thing there's plenty of exposure and tv going around for all these young starlets.

Vaudeville Villain wrote:This doesn’t make sense, how can you guarantee TV for a fight between Goodwin and Farrell further down the line? Sky work with Matchroom, granted they do make good matches between fighters not in their outfit, but if Farrell doesn’t win Prizefighter then he’s in the same position as Chris and will have to fight his way to an English title before going for anything bigger. Chris had a chance to get into contention against Carl and lost, so he is probably going to have to look at the Area or English title and it is not automatically guaranteed that a title fight of this type will end up on TV. Sky and Allegedly channel are unlikely to snap up Goodwin-Farrell immediately and it is a fight that probably would have to take place off-TV for a minor belt, or non-title. The winner may be able to push on and gain a place on a TV show undercard, but won’t be headlining anytime soon.

Saying you’re waiting until it is a TV fight doesn’t make sense as that scenario may never come about, especially in the current lightweight division where Goodwin and Farrell, without disrespect to either, is at the back of a queue that has a lot of former and current champs in it.

The whole, “We’ll wait for TV”, only makes sense if RTE jump in due to Farrell’s connections to Ireland.

It is risky given his defeats, as you will hold out for a TV fight that may never happen and fail to make a 50-50 fight that would push the winner on.
We are looking into the future, your idea of the future is obviously a bit more short term than mine. I'm not saying in six months the fight will be on TV, I'm saying that in the future, and at the rate they are both progressing, the fight will be huge, well beyond Area or English title level

As things stand Chris doesn't need the fight (he would take it, he would fight anyone, no fear there) TV for me is irrelevant. Dave could have the fight screened by the Mars Rover to little green men on Mars, and we would still want Chris to have the right fights for his development.

As I said, we have plans for late in the year, but Istvan Kiss has our full attention.

Vaudeville Villain wrote:I applaud the ambition etc., but at the current rate of progression the fight may be dead and buried beyond six-months as Farrell has a tough job on in Prizefighter and Goodwin’s loss to Carl suggests his improvement will have to be huge if he is to break into the lightweight top five, let alone contest one of the belts.

Are you saying that they will contest the British or European in a year or so despite being in a division that boasts, outside of Burns, Gavin Rees (who may have moved on, granted), Derry Mathews, John Murray, Anthony Crolla, Kevin Mitchell, Ben Muprhy, Carl J (currently ahead of both in the title queue) and the possibility of Liam Walsh, should he decide he likes it at 135lbs.

It is good to dream etc., but Carl J is very, very much past it, and struggled with the likes of Murray in sparring, so the improvements will have to be mega to get into contention. Unless the guys above are all involved in a terrible accident or targeted by a serial killer who hates lightweights, so, post-Prizefighter, the Farrell fight makes sense right here and now in my opinion.

The English title is not a bad title, and as things stand the best hope for one of these guys depending on the outcome of the upcoming English title fight, which will place Owen or Coyle in front of these guys as things stand.

It's about opinions, and I'm not going to start giving time and dates. I'm also not going to start talking about the names you mentioned (Chris didn't, so I'm not going to start) What I will say is that on a daily basis we see Chris get better and he is also getting stronger. I know you don't get to see this, so that will have to be taken on trust. But it re-enforces our view that we should let him develop, and get him the right fights for his development. Remember, he is 23 years old, this isn't a case of 'now or never' or being goaded into a fight. When he gets there he will, in our opinion be there to stay, this isn't a smash and grab. He is our lad and we will do what's right for him, and those plans are in place.

But as I said, Istvan Kiss has our sole attention this week. It's up to Chris to go and do a job, the rest will come.

Vaudeville Villain wrote:OK, best of luck with it, but it is a tough division so it will be interesting to see if either of the guys discussed can break into the top spots. It may be a case that a few guys will have to match off as — and I know Mickey Helliet disagrees here — the PF winner will probably get a British shot, so the queue will move yet it is a long slog at 135lb.
Hard division agreed, that's why Chris needs to be primed and ready when he fights these guys. We know what we need to do, and we wish all the other fighters in the division the best of luck. The good thing about there being so much quality is that there are plenty of domestic rivalries out there in the future. Exciting times.

Hope you look out for the result Friday, and Chris' results in the future.

If he fights them, and it is a big if at the minute. Aye, I'll look out for the result and imagine I'll get to see him if fights in Chester anytime soon.

Will be a good workout this one
Should be a good workout? The lad he's fighting isn't even 20, has compiled his 10 wins against opponents with a combined record of 12-57-5 (six of whom have never had a win, several of whom get knocked out in every fight they take), has achieved every win in either Hungry or Slovakia and has not only been beaten but stopped within 5 rounds every time he has stepped up. This doesn't constitute a good workout for a six year, eighteen fight pro in my book.

I acknowledge that Chris turned pro very early and performed far better than I expected against an all be it faded CJ but this shouldn't even be a decent spar.........

I was at the weigh in today, one of my lads is making his debut on the bill, Goodwin looked in good shape. Should be a decent fight. Might have some video of the weigh in later.

Yeah, really was terrible, the commentators sounded like they didnt know what they were on about, even though Nicholas Cruz is a very good trainer he should stay away from the commentating!

Commentary on IrishTV.ie was from my old mate John Mulligan! Nice fella John.

Didn't watch the video back yet but was there on the night and wondering if they showed the bizarre incident in the 10th round when Kiss spewed his guts up all over the ring and over me and Boxrec's Brendan Galbraith at ringside.

That shirt was clean on too :TU:

Ha Ha never worry about the shirt. I was more worried about Istvan Kiss. I've never seen anyone spew as much before, it was bouncing across the ring apron! And then ref Emile Tiedt grabbed him by the arm and said something along the lines of, "Come on get back out there" :o
