Boxers who weren't great when you met them...
Re: Boxers who weren't great when you met them...
Seen lennox Lewis at the haye klitschko weigh in in hamburg. I was outside the shop having a fag and he walked past with his minders, so I quickly got my iPhone out of my pocket and filmed him whilst I said 'hey lennox', he was dressed up like a twat in some stupid hat, put his hand up to hide his face from my camera and gave me the most stinking look I ever seen. I also blame him for losing that same phone later in the night when I was pissed up down the reeperbahn, think I was showing the video about to any one who was slightly interested, can't remember being mugged but woke up with a filthy hangover and no phone.

I reckon you've got a case, Lewis is in the frame as far as I can seellamalew wrote:Seen lennox Lewis at the haye klitschko weigh in in hamburg. I was there and thought it odd at the time that the guy with the hat who was sat ringside with the judges at Khan vs. Petterson tried to sell me an iPhone....palooka wrote:I reckon you've got a case, Lewis is in the frame as far as I can seellamalew wrote:Seen lennox Lewis at the haye klitschko weigh in in hamburg. Who would have him fight that he hadn't fought? You can't blame him for Bowe, so who else is a glaring omission?thepocketrocket wrote:His longevity always stands him in good stead, but cleaning up old men and over hyped guys like Grant and Tua doesn't make him a top six heavy of all time.

When Tyson was in Glasgow to fight Saversese a friend of mine was in his dressing room as an official . He had a programme and wanted it signed for his son . He waited and watched until Tyson was sitting quietly by himself . He wandered over and asked for the autograph . He was about to sign it ,but for some reason looked at Mike McCallum who shook his head and took the programme off him . My friend asked McCallum for it back . McCallum glared at him ,turned his back and walked away telling him to 'F+++ off " .
The friend watched McCallum sit and read the programme ,and when he had finished and left it sitting ,he quickly snatched it back .
I like to imagine McCallum staggering about some back street alley with a bottle of rum in brown paper bag picking up cigarette buts !!

I remember seeing Michael Gomez working the door in a Stalybridge nightclub, it was around the time he had a comeback and fought Johansson etc, so I was surpsied to see him on the doors still.
I was like, "hey man, Gomez you're like one of my boxing heroes!" To be honest he was just like "yeh, yeh, whatever", really didn't seem to want to talk about boxing and just went round seeming to take his job really seriously.
The other bouncers were just stood chilling at the door whereas he was walking round constantly, checking up everywhere, the club was mostly empty but Gomez certainly was doing a proper job!

Carl Froch is local to me. I have witnessed 3 incidents in which he was acting an idiot. First was in a minibus about 9 years ago, he was with a load of Londoners on their way to city centre, had some banter with the cocknies and it was all good fun, got talkin about boxing and Froch piped up on the back seat all Leary and said,"you ever heard of Carl Froch?" second occasion he was Commonwealth champ and played in the local pool league (his mum ran a local pub) and we played them (and won) so i asked him his view on Reid vs Ottke fight. Carl said Reid was useless and lost that fight fair and square. Then I saw him running through a packed city centre throwing jabs like Rocky Balboa, in a cringeworthy, attention seeking manner. Now he's shut up about Calzaghe and has realised his level, I like him a lot more. I always felt like people thought I was jealous of Froch, but I genuinely just didn't like him.

Always had a great experience when I've met boxers. Tommy Hearns shot the breeze with us in Vegas, summoned his hooker from his limo to take our picture. Lennox high fived me, nearly pushed jim watt over at the bar by accident and then stood chatting to him for ages. Seemed that trip to Vegas everyone was happy to chat And they had time for everyone.
The only two boxers I've heard bad things about are Julius Francis and Wayne lleyewll (however you spell his name!)

(Jon Jo Irwin and Mark Epton are real gents, very grounded and pleasant men, a man I know says that Junior Witter is good company and so is Steffy Bull).

Sugar Ray Robinson once ignored Carmen Basilio on the street. He would pay for it with his world middleweight title.
