Brian Magee vs Andre Dirrell for vacant WBA title

Post by Horse »

Just noticed that this fight is scheduled to take place on the 17th of November for the vacant WBA title (Ward is the WBA super champion).
"The situation is that Balzsay had had to withdraw due to a long standing injury but Brian remains the number one contender," he said.

"As we won the purse bids the situation is still in our hands and we must find an opponent for Brian that meets with the approval of the WBA so we can fight for the vacant title."
This is why the title was vacant.

Magee gets danced around for 12. Easy UD for Dirrell.

Dirrell has a bad chin, but if he keeps out of harms way he'll win a wide UD for me. Wouldn't be surprised if he gets sparked though.

I can't see Magee being quick enough on his feet or quick enough pullingthe trigger, though it'd be nice. Magee's battered a couple of slowfooted euro-level fighters recently but i think Dirrell's all wrong for him stylewise.

I would agree, but I don't know how quick and confident Dirrell is now. He's had a fair whack of inactivity. Even if Dirrell is still much the same, I think Magee will get a handful of opportunities in the corners and Dirrell will have to fight his way out. I question his heart whenever I've seen him, but you're right that Magee may not be the guy to do it at this stage of his career.

I don't think Dirrell has a bad chin at all. He took some good punches from Froch. What makes you think that he has got a bad chin (other than the illegal shot landed by Abraham for which he was DQed)?

Because he seemed not far from out on his feet before that blow :TU:

I am probably going to get slaughtered for thinking this let alone saying it, because when I first saw that this fight has been announced on here. My inital thought process was simply hmm this a good baramomter fight for Andre Dirrell to see how he stacks up against both Carl Froch and Lucian Bute the 2 and 3 guys here at Super Middleweight who he will probably have in his sights should get past Magee. Because Froch needed 11 rounds to stop Magee for the British and Commonwealth titles back in 2006, while Bute needed 10 rounds to stop Magee last year, so show that he wants to be seen as a relevant force in a competitive and talent deep Super Middleweight division he needs to handsomely beat if not stop Magee.

As for Magee. Well at 37 it is without doubt his last chance a major world title and he does not beat Dirrell regardless if he gets whipped or gallantly loses then he is pretty much done for. But I hope I am wrong.

I feel a bit sorry for Magee here - he's been on a good run and has been a long time Interim champion. When Sartison got injured the WBA ignored its interim champion and gave Balzay a rather easy shot at the full title.

Finally Magee gets his chance, but its against a better fighter than Balzay.

Go watch round 10 and seriously tell me that he wasn't 1 clean punch away from being gone. Suppose his corner were drowning him with water at the end because he needed a wash. The guy daren't take a punch, for good reason.

all evidence aside, Dirrell's aversion to being hit suggests he's far from a Hagler in the beard stakes.

This. Could even see a late stoppage for Dirrell if he starts sitting down on his shots in the later rounds.

Agreed, think Dirrell has pretty good power when he does so,

Agreed again and I don't think Magee will hold the same fear for Dirrell that others have. I think this would be a very painful night for Brian.

Even in the Froch fight I'd say he hurt Froch more than vice versa and in the early parts of the Abraham fight when he did let his shots go, he looked pretty fornicateing good. Can't really see Magee having it in him to turn the tide after that like Abraham tried to, I see a 5/6 round stoppage for an agressive Dirrell. Whether or not he could keep this mindset against a Froch or Bute level opponent is an entirely different matter

Andre Dirrell or Mikkel Kessler - ouch!

I guess from Brian's point of view they would be two great opoonants for him, but from a betting standpoint I wouldn't give him much chance.
