9 fights in 4 years is no good for anybody - he needs to re-think his career strategy as it isn't working.
The answer is simple - either pay the journeymen more (if this is what you want to do) or as you say make a fair match with other "prospects".
At the end of day money talks - any fight can be made and people will accept an unfair playing field if they are being paid enough.

Yes you might have to take a fight at late notice but take a leaf out of Darren Harrisons book and be ready all the time and make being fit and ready to box be a lifestyle.safeerah wrote:Yes money talks, but when a title shot is at stake, they use that to draw people into taking fights at short notice, it's the big promoters who control the titles, because of Tv revenue ext..bripez wrote:That is what I was trying to say - but you worded it much better !safeerah wrote:I think it's the prospects turning Selkirk down, because they want an even playing field, unfortunately boxing in this country does not work that way, Journeymen may take the fight, but would want more money then normal, because if they get stopped they will have 28 day ban, so wil lose out on work.

I agree - Steve Robinson being a great example (and one of my favourite boxers for the way he took his opportunity and then moved up a lot of levels to beat some top top lads).mcato wrote:Yes you might have to take a fight at late notice but take a leaf out of Darren Harrisons book and be ready all the time and make being fit and ready to box be a lifestyle.
Saf - if offered a low pay / late notice British title shot : would you take it ?
If not, what is your strategy - surely you need to be with one of the top couple of promoters, otherwise you will need to be ready for this kind of opportunity ?

Yes personally, I would for the british title, money is not any issue in these circumstance, but for an eliminator, Area or English title, then no, we did take 3 weeks notice for Della Rosa, for his no 6 world ranking, it was worth the risk, with Hamilton he had fought quite recently before he was called up, so he would have been in decent shape, I have met Darren Hamilton and he does not put on much weight in between for fights, that is a major factor, but it was very risky for him to fight having been ill the week of the fight though. British title shots don't come everyday, so you have to take it while you can, it's a case of measuring risk with reward.bripez wrote:I agree - Steve Robinson being a great example (and one of my favourite boxers for the way he took his opportunity and then moved up a lot of levels to beat some top top lads).mcato wrote:Yes you might have to take a fight at late notice but take a leaf out of Darren Harrisons book and be ready all the time and make being fit and ready to box be a lifestyle.

Trouble is there are plenty of kids (especially thinking of ones round my old neck of the woods) who aren't backed by a big promoter and have taken british title shots with hardly any notice, too early in their career or when they werent ready and it has seriously damaged their career

Yes Saturday Kid, fighters like Dean Harrison who took on Mcclosky at short notice for the british title, got beaten up and knocked out, never the same since, his stable at the time had a history of putting fighters at short notice into big fights, with similair results.saturday_kid wrote:Trouble is there are plenty of kids (especially thinking of ones round my old neck of the woods) who aren't backed by a big promoter and have taken british title shots with hardly any notice, too early in their career or when they werent ready and it has seriously damaged their career

Harris will be down and out from the first solid jab what a joke of a fight.
Nothing against Rose who needs to earn a crust of course.

Yep, its a joke - hopefully Harris will pull out beforehand leaving enough time for a decent Kid to be brought in.mcato wrote:Nothing against Rose just sorry for the fans. Dean was the first lad on my mind with that one mate. Even the Haywood fight for the english that he lost (most say unfairly) by 1 point or something he took at short notice.safeerah wrote:Yes Saturday Kid, fighters like Dean Harrison who took on Mcclosky at short notice for the british title, got beaten up and knocked out, never the same since, his stable at the time had a history of putting fighters at short notice into big fights, with similair results.saturday_kid wrote:Trouble is there are plenty of kids (especially thinking of ones round my old neck of the woods) who aren't backed by a big promoter and have taken british title shots with hardly any notice, too early in their career or when they werent ready and it has seriously damaged their career
Not knocking his team then cos they have done well by the area for most the boxers (i know you'll disagree with me fella for good reason) at times, but I do think there was a sort of culture of they'd build up a local lad for a bit then didn't have the backing/resources to go any further so they tried their luck with mostly short notice away from home chances

Welbourn is the one they are pushing now. he could get pushed early or for a short notice fight.saturday_kid wrote:Dean was the first lad on my mind with that one mate. Being ready all the time makes short notice fights a positive and not a negative. Ochieng loss a fight and then got a offer at short notice and he has benefitted from it.
Re: Brian Rose vs Vivian Harris What happen to Sam Webb???
With all due respect, training all the time and holding weight is not easy, plus you are open to illness and injury, there is a difference between having short notice for a six rounder and a twelve rounder for a major title, a true champion will want to beat his challengers on level terms and challengers of similar level, otherwise how can he consider himself the best in his division.mcato wrote:Being ready all the time makes short notice fights a positive and not a negative. Re: Brian Rose vs Vivian Harris What happen to Sam Webb???
With all due respect I know fighters who have tight training schedule and keep fit throughout the year the only thing is that most of them are american they just have a different attitude towards training they make it a lifestyle not this have a fight have a drink then off for 6 weeks rubbish then get back into training. BE READY AT ALL TIMES THIS IS BOXING TAKE A LEAF FROM THE AMERICANS YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN THAT CALL IS COMING.MUST TAKE YOUR OPPERTUNITY WHEN U GET THAT CALL. COMPLAINING ABOUT TAKING A FIGHT AT SHORT NOTICE WONT CHANGE THE SITUATIONsafeerah wrote:With all due respect, training all the time and holding weight is not easy, plus you are open to illness and injury, there is a difference between having short notice for a six rounder and a twelve rounder for a major title, a true champion will want to beat his challengers on level terms and challengers of similar level, otherwise how can he consider himself the best in his division.mcato wrote:Being ready all the time makes short notice fights a positive and not a negative. Re: Brian Rose vs Vivian Harris What happen to Sam Webb???
With all due respect, I have trained fighters from different countries and understand different cultures, it is difficult to explain to you, when your not a trainer, but I will try my best : When you train a fighter, you aim to hit peak performance for a fight, so slowly building him up throughout the training camp, sometimes fighters can peak too early and be on the way down come fight night, also overtraining can cause a fighter to be flat on the day, so training all the time without break, on the hope of getting a call, can cause a number of problems, as I have explained in all my posts, you can except it or ignore it, it's up to you.mcato wrote:With all due respect I know fighters who have tight training schedule and keep fit throughout the year the only thing is that most of them are american they just have a different attitude towards training they make it a lifestyle not this have a fight have a drink then off for 6 weeks rubbish then get back into training.
