Although the newspapers abstained from listing the name of the referee ("well known sporting man"), but according to Johnny Eckhardt's recollections in 1911 (5th part in a series of articles "The greatest fight I ever saw"), it was Al Smith ( http://boxrec.com/list_bouts.php?human_ ... at=referee ), although he recalled the number of rounds incorrectly (51 instead of 49).
