You seem hellbent on making out I'm disagreeing with you. I'm not, I'm merely introducing facts that illustrate that the fight was mooted a lot earlier than it could have actually happened.

Sanchez himself was quoted in '81 (don't have the exact reference to hand) as saying he wasn't really interested in the WBA belts but the WBC and was quite prepared to jump to lightweight to fight Arguello because he valued the "green" belt more than any other.

I think the person who put the biggest obstacle to the fight coming off was Sanchez' promoter, Don King.

That quote must've been in late 81, as Arguello didn't win his title until June, and Sanchez had Gomez to worry about until late August. Of course, by that time, Arguello had Mancini to deal with (in October).
My point is that the fight was mooted when Arguello decided to fight Pryor. Who knows: Had Alexis won and had Sanchez lived, maybe they'd have fought at lightweight.
But, regardless of Sanchez's death, Pryor I (and II) would've squelched the fight.
King was also Pryor's promoter. In his post-fight interview after Johnson, Pryor of course mentioned Leonard, but he also mentioned Arguello.
I'm not hellbent on viewing you as disagreeing with me; this began with your refutation of my "Sanchez would not have fought Arguello" comment, and I merely pointed out that that comment was made in a historical context (regardless of his death), not in the context of claiming that Sanchez was afraid of Arguello (or vice versa).

Are you sure King was his promoter at the time they made the Arguello fight? Pretty sure his 3 fight contract ended with Montilla?

Thought King still was. I know Arguello was with Top Rank; I don't think Pryor ever was. So, who else would've promoted him?

I also mentioned King because he was clearly Pryor's promoter in 11/81, and Pryor stated in the post-fight interview after Johnson that his team was working on an Arguello fight if Leonard didn't materialize. So, even if King and Pryor parted ways, we already were in March 1982. By that July, Pryor-Arguello was a done deal if both won their tune-ups, which they did. So Pryor-Arguello had been in the works for a while.

Sanchez was rumoured to be having issues making weight which might be why he was not willing to up his work rate in fights. Those were dfays of the same day weigh in and without all the “science” of today.

Arguello-Sanchez could have been a classic 3 fight series. Pedroza would have been close because Pedroza had the right style to beat Salvador. Even so I think Sanchez was good enough to overcome that issue.

He’d have beaten Rosario in a come from behind thriller…

Eventually, as a an older guy, past his peak and way north of his best division they’d have fed him to Whittaker.
