Martin Gethin Vs Carl Johannsen

Post by saturday_kid »

Is this fight on or is Gethin fighting for the commonwealth?

Johannsen nowhere near the fighter he was but still good be a real good fight this.

Gethin deserves his shot at some titles - won the English twice, was unlucky to lose on a cut against Lawton (was losing the fight), unlcuky in a close one in British title eliminator against Watson.

Had a bad back injury that kept hom out a good while, since coming back he's had 4 or 5 wins over mainly foreign opposition, but his last win was a good stoppage of Stuart Green.

It's about time Gethin fought. I watched him fight Fewkes in Nottingham about 5 years ago and not heard of him since !

Check his record mate!!

He arrived really on the mainstream scene when he upset Nadeem Siddique in one of the fights of the year, then beat Fewkes (who was a very highly touted prospect at the time) as you mention for the English - he then lost the english to Scott Lawton (on a cut) on Froch Vs Pascal undercard.

He then lost a very close Brit title eliminator (controversially) to John Watson up in Liverpool, then lost a shock 4 rounder against Chris Long (most who were there though believed he was robbed - he also starts slow sometimes and isn't suited to 4 rounders imo)

After a while he won the English title back beating Dezzi Higginson, also beat Jon Baguley.

He was out for the 2nd half of 2010 and most of 2011 with a back injury and waiting for the operation - since the tail end of last year though he's come back and been quite busy beating mostly foreign opposition picking up an international masters strap - and in his last fight stopped scottish light welter champ stuart green iin a few rounds.

I rate Martin and really hope he gets his big shot - he's lost a few yeah but msot if not all his losses have been tight/controversial or on a cut.

He's done things the hard way stopping prospects away from home, nearly all his big fights have been away from home. Never had one of the big TV promoters behind him, never been a massive ticket seller so always had to make the best of any fights he's been offered. Seems to be getting the home support since he's come back from the injury which is good to see.

War Gethin!

P.S if any of you haven't seen the Gethin Vs Siddique fight its well worth hunting down - great little fight

Marts a good lad (as all the Gethin lads are) and has never quite fulfilled his potential. It seems when he actually seems to get into his stride and is going places, injuries, cuts or un motivated performances hamper him. He had stinkers against long (which I had a draw) and foreign opposition in Peterbourgh where he sustained a horrific swollen eye, but when he's motivated and focussed he is a real handful. It looks like Martin is up for this one so I reckon we can expect to see Martin back to his best. Carl is still dangerous and has been around the block enough times to know the score so this has the makings of a classic.

Good post there, didn't see the fight in Peterborough but heard it wasn't the best - does seem to need a bit of danger/something to gain to bring the best out of him.

Should be a good one this.

Shame its not gonna be televised as its unlikely I can get down to it.
