Roy Jones Jr. ERROR!

Post by evndrbsn »

I've noticed this for a while but I figured it would eventually be fixed ... it is listed that Roy Jones Jr. was KO'd by Antonio Tarver in their second fight in round two. He in fact lost via TKO as he rose to his feet before the count of ten and referee Jay Nady deemed him unfit to continue. So again, Jones lost via TKO in 2nd, not KO in 2nd.

[Note: This was posted a couple days ago and was moving over to the second page. Please fix this as soon as possible]

Your right, to the eye it was a TKO, however the NV State Athletic Commission called it a KO officially. We're going off what the commissions report to us, so a KO it is.

According to news reports it should be a TKO.

Kevin Iole; Las Vegas Review-Journal Sunday, May 16, 2004
“Jones finally rose, but referee Jay Nady waved off the bout at 1 minute, 41 seconds.”

John Gregg; Boxing Times (May 15, 2004)
“Jones staggered to his feet at the count of nine but referee Jay Nady looked into his eyes and then immediately waved off the contest at 1:41 of the second round.”

Doug Fischer; MaxBoxing (May 16, 2004)
“Nine seconds later Jones stumbled to his feet and took a few steps on shaky legs, needing the ropes to keep him upright. Referee Jay Nady took one look in his eyes and wisely waved the contest off at the 1:41 mark of the second round.”

Yeah, that's what I remember. Roy fought to his feet but was in terrible shape to continue. He slumped against the ropes immediately as it was waved off.

[quote="Blue"] According to news reports it should be a TKO.

Iole's report doesn't indicate whether Nady reached 10...but in any event, should we reflect what journists said while scrambling to cobble together their reports, what the NSAC recorded, or what actually happenes when we watch it?

Nady reached 10 and then waved it off (and THEN Jones stumbled, despite what Fischer incorrectly reported). That's a KO, no?

According to the BoxRec glossary, a KO is defined as "when a boxer is knocked down by his opponent, falls through the ropes, or otherwise is down, and the referee reaches the count of ten before the boxer is back on his feet in the ring." Jones may have not been capable of continuing the fight, but after the count of nine, nothing but the soles of his feet were touching the canvas.
