Worst beatings in Boxing
Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
Tysons brutalisation of Ruddock the second time (even tho it was one of those close but clear decisons and hardly a shutout) was pretty severe.
Ruddock went from being a 27 year old in the prime of his life to a shot fighter ruined inside and outside. The disintegration was immediate. He looked very poor beating Greg Page and against Lewis he didnt even throw a single smash in the couple of rounds he was demolished. True some of it was his being ripped off by murad muhammed.
I saw Ruddock fight Morrison on KOTV HD the other night and his hands were so slow, the power and snap drained. A lack of confidence and workrate and of course the movement he had circa the late 80s was long gone.
In a nutshell the Tyson beating was a very bad one.

tyson was also brutally beaten...dude was taking ruddock's smashes all night but not fighting for 3 and a half years (not on purpose) after that did his body some good to recover at leastmugabi wrote:Tysons brutalisation of Ruddock the second time (even tho it was one of those close but clear decisons and hardly a shutout) was pretty severe.

And speaking of short, bad beatings...Curry/McCrory...poor Milton.
At least Curry didn't prolong it like McCallum did.

Lots of good picks here no doubt.
I wonder though in a different era, we might have some more remote picks on here. Im stating the obvious I guess but when there were local club shows all over the place and small cards where fans turned up to watch live, there were some really great fights nobody saw except the smaller live crowds. Some beatings too. I was fortunate to fight on some smaller shows and see some live ones where local club fighter fringe contenders etc. really let it all hang out. A good one here in Chicago in the early eighties comes to mind. Roosevelt Green vs Mike Landini, man these guys beat the hell out of each other. Down multiple times each. Ill think of many more..

Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
Aye I agree when I watched half the time when I was putting the fight in the book I was sitting there thinking that the hell is holding these blokes up because they were throwing shots that 75-85% of the time would have taken any one else out but they were still standing there throwing everything they had at each other.Counter-puncher wrote:ha, nice call. normally posts on this thread would be onesided beatings, but of course, especially in the 3rd fight, these two just beat the daylights out of each other. evey time you see it, you marvel at it.IRLangmaid25 wrote:The Vazquez v Rafa Marquez series were utterly horrific as they were absorbing as well. Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
Snap! I was going to add Tyson....but as horrific as the beating MIke too was....his spirit and thirst for the battle was undiminished that night....at the 12th round he smiled and smashed his gloves in mutual respect into Razors gloves...and declared " u know we're gonna meet again".... Tyson would have fought 15 or 20 rounds that night.....he looked the reincarnation of Jack Dempsey that night.......no...i beleive the 3 and a half year layoff as u say later killed Tyson.patscorpio wrote:tyson was also brutally beaten...dude was taking ruddock's smashes all night but not fighting for 3 and a half years (not on purpose) after that did his body some good to recover at leastmugabi wrote:Tysons brutalisation of Ruddock the second time (even tho it was one of those close but clear decisons and hardly a shutout) was pretty severe.

Curry-Mcrory was a bad one......but worse was Honeyghan-Curry.............sure don was badly weight drained and had managerial distractions etc...but the beating inflicted by Honeyghan ruined Currys invincible aura, destroyed his reflexes, and spirit and he was never ever the same again....Honeyghan did use headbutts along with his brilliant boxing and power....and sure Currys two comeback foes also headbutted DOn badly...but Curry was ruined forever ...was never the defensive masterpiece he had been....his reflexes went to.........
Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
Honeygan-Curry never came to my mind. I had it 4-2 Lloyd. Curry didn't look good in the Rodriguez fight before that, short a scrap though that was. He had cuts bad enough to stop the fight, but Milt just got brutalized. Chilling stuff, and he got battered from the opening bell.
I think Norris gave Curry a worse beating than Honeygan did.
The end of Curry was sad; he fought Emmett Linton, who told him before the fight to put down his crackpipe or something to that effect.

Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but the beating Bowe took in the 2nd Golota fight has got to be one of the worst that a guy has ever taken and still been officially declared the winner at the end. Golota landed over 400 punches in the bout, and over 50% of what he threw. Ridiculous punishment for any man to absorb
Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
Yep; it's been mentioned. He took a pretty bad beating in the first Golota fight, too.gilgamesh wrote:Not sure if it's been mentioned yet, but the beating Bowe took in the 2nd Golota fight has got to be one of the worst that a guy has ever taken and still been officially declared the winner at the end. thinking about 2-way beatings, Quiroga and Kid Akeem beat the absolute piss out of each other

How'd you score that one? I had it a draw.
I read that Quiroga was stabbed to death a few years ago. Sad.

from memory a draw or 115-114/113 to Quiroga. typical of fights with 2/3 very close/swing rounds, I just recall thinking from Akeem's perspective there were too many periods of relative inactivity during rounds. another fight that still makes me wince and gasp every time i see it.
Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
I remember when Robert Welch (the color analyst along with Sam Smith) said, "Kid Akeem is not well. Kid Akeem is not well at all." Then the telecast got off the air soon after. No post-fight interview with Quiroga, even; he left the ring.
Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
Arguello v Mancini, Gomez v Pintor were both extremely competitive, brutal fights in which the losers essentially got beaten down at the end. Both came back to win belts, although Pintor was KO'd in three of his next eight fights and won only seven of his last 16.
Another brutal, 15-round beat down was the IBF bantamweight fight, Orlando Canizales v Kevin Seabrooks. If Canizales could have punched a little harder, it would have been over sooner, but he essentially chopped Seabrooks up for 15 rounds. Seabrooks was only 25 when Canizales stopped him, but he lost eight of his last 10, getting KO'd in seven of those.

Its those longer fights in which a fighter gets stopped late that are the most serious beatings long term.
Getting belted out right away seems merciful.
Joe Louis vs John Henry Lewis is an example of a guy who liked the other guy so he got him outta there right away. No sustained beating.
Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
Pug, I might have picked Hagler-Hamsho I, but I remember having to suffer through that horrible Weaver v James "Keep Away" Tillis heavyweight title fight on the same card and it effed up my memory. They should have banned boxing at the Rosemont Horizon after that fight
Re: Worst beatings in Boxing
Yep, that fight was horrible. No fun watching it live either. I don't know what was going through Quicks head that night. There was a couple times in subsequent years where I felt like asking him about it. But, what would be the point? Nobody knows better than him what coulda been. Funny that you mention boxing at Rosemont Giacomino. I don't think there were any more big fights there after that at all. I could be wrong. There were cards. I just don't remember anything big. Maybe David Diaz but not sure.
