Oct. 23,1923 Mandell/Paluso Card

I got this stuff from Newspaper Archives, which is a pay site, so I can't give you a direct link here.

This is about the Oct. 15, 1923 Portland, Maine card featuring a Joe Mandell/Lou Paluso bout. Newspaper Archives calls this Maine paper the "Biddeford Journal", but the top banner on page 1 calls the paper the "Biddeford Daily Journal". This is a complete story in the middle of page 6 from the Oct. 16, 1923 newspaper:

Headline: YOUNG COTE WON BOUT IN PORTLAND
Young Cote the 3rd, of this city, defeated Tommy Clayton of Boston at the exibition given by the Eastern A.C., at Portland Monday evening.
The main bout between Lew (sic) Paluso and Joe Mandell was all in favor of Lew (sic) who administered a terrible beating to Joe.

That is the entire article.

In the Lowell (MA) Sun a couple weeks later, in the Oct. 29, 1923 edition on page 10 seems to try to paint a slightly different picture without actually contradicting anything said in the Biddeford paper:
"Joe Mandell, the clever Philadelphia featherweight, who injured his right hand in his bout with Lou Paluso at Portland will be ready to resume training this week. The Quaker fought 11 rounds with a bad right hand, his best weapon, and in the last session sent Paluso down for a count of nine.
This is the first time Paluso was ever off his feet and the Salt Lake City youth has fought some of the best boys in the world. Mandell is anxious to obtain a match in Lowell with Billy Murphy."

Boxrec lists the Paluso/Mandell bout without a newspaper decision result. The Cote/Clayton bout is not listed at all on Boxrec.

This should make it easier on you. You may need some magnification for the newspaper articles. The key article in the Biddeford paper is entitled "YOUNG COTE WON BOUT IN PORTLAND" , in the 6th column near the bottom of the page. The key article in the Lowell paper is entitled "AVILLA AND TANSEY ARE BOTH HARD PUNCHERS" , in the 5th column in the middle of the page, with the key part under the subheading "Wants to Box Murphy". I believe the Boxrec record for the Paluso/Mandell bout should be changed from a ND NC to a newspaper decision win for Paluso. The Cote/Clayton match should be added to the card and to the Boxrec records. Feel free to respond with any questions.
