Glenn McCrory?

Post by nfc90210 »

How good a fighter was Glenn McCrory? I know him from his commentary work but as his career finished the summer before I started secondary school I don't have any recollections of him when he was active. You can only tell so much by looking at someone's record.

He was pretty good but was caught between divisions, it killed him getting down to 190 and he wasn't big enough to compete with best heavyweights.

With the skills he possessed he probably over achieved.

His brother Shaun was also a very good fighter but was plagued with injuries.

Yeah. He'd have had far more success at 200 lbs. He was criminally out of his depth against Lewis. He looked like a rag doll in that fight.

A combination of hard work, a poor division, good matchmaking/promoting and right time right place helped McCrory become world champion.

He followed and plagued Lewis to death winding him up until he got the fight, he knew before he stepped into the ring he was beat but it was the biggest payday of his career.

He bought a pub shortly after that fight and ran that for a few years.

I agree, he did over-achieve. It's true about the weight issue as well. He was a good fighter though. I read that when he won the World title, his purse was £7,500. Can't blame him for hounding Lewis.

Good guy anyway :salut:

I watched the Mccrory-Lewis fight not too long ago. McCrory showed alot of heart but he was way out of his depth and seriously outgunned.

Nothing special at all, did well with a limited set of tools in his arsenal, but was around at the right time in Cruiserweight's formation to have some relative success. Lewis annihaliated him, but as people say, can't blame anyone chasing a payday.

A fight with Carl Thompson was nearly made but if I remember rightly (don't quote me on this) Thompson's trainer died and the fight never happened. Good job as well 'The Cat' would have hammered him.

Evander Holyfield vacated the belts - that required six men to compete for three vacant world titles and there were not six world class men qualified to do so. Step forward Glenn McCrory.

mercman wrote:Always thought that McCrory would have had a better career if he had started out as a cruiserweight and gone up to heavyweight as he got older, rather than vice versa. Either way, McCrory was about 6'4" so the 200lb limit would have suited him much better.

I seem to recall that McCrory was also quite badly managed in his early career with some poor match-making. Apparently, he had little sparring or quality training early on, and a poor diet. Strange really because McCrory was seen as a potential golden boy at first: he was a junior ABA champion and racked up a good unbeaten run when he first turned professional.
Being from the North East wont have helped the sparring and as for the diet, although it was only 25 years ago, very little was known then compared to what it is like now. And being a Junior ABA champ from Stanley wont have made any ripples in British boxing.
