Future "Burns Night" in Scotland

Post by Emmseegee »

Mitchell kept mouthing about how the fight would have been so much bigger if it had been in London but now with Burns winning again and especially in the fashion he did, I reckon its time to start considering options for a big show in a Parkhead/Hampden.

The place was rocking tonight, superb atmosphere. Obviously Burns will be out another once or twice before the famous Scottish summer comes around again but if things are still going smoothly by the summer then it would be good to see this.

It could potentially be similar fighters to the show tonight but could have Burns, Harrison, Simpson all in meaningful fights and also step up the level of a few of the Prospects for 50/50 fights. Roberts, Thain, Simmons.

Burns v Rees?
Harrison v Murray (Not based on tonights performance)
Simpson in european title fight

Maybe its just my wishful thinking but i reckon the scottish fans would snap up tickets for a large scale show. Would love to see it.

And once again.... Well Done to Team Burns and Good Luck to Mitchell for the future.
Ive always wanted to see him succeed but just not with Burns being the stepping stone!

No offence but can we stop matching Burns with domestic challengers? 2 out of his 5 title defenses so far have been domestic clashes, the top guys aren't domestic and the domestic guys will not make Burns into any sort of a star.

Probably needs to be selling out the 10k seat SECC before you think about going down the stadium route!

Warren seems pretty committed to a Burns v Harrison fight some time soon, but even that wouldn't be big enough for Hampden.

I actually think, looking at the rankings, that Rees is a decent shout for it. He's the European champion and is popular and recognisable to many on these shores, which is where allegedly will have the majority of their subscribers. I think it's a decent match-up. If Burns wins then he can truly say he has cleared out the domestic/euro rivals and then really does have to step up and face one of the other beltholders.

THe difference with them is, they won't come cheap and, Broner apart, no-one 'casual' will really have a clue who they are. I also bet the Rees fight can be made relatively cheaply.

Is Rees with Matchroom?

Burns-Rees won't happen unless Rees becomes his mandatory due to promotional ties, plus Matchroom are getting well in with the IBF so I doubt that will ever happen. Harrison isn't ready for a world title shot, Burns would murder him, he needs a unification to sell out a stadium

This is up there wif Andy Murry, by far :TU: no dout about it. Burns beats Harrision easy, if it happins, in which it shouldnt enyways. As Scott has beatin no 1 near, who Ricky has. Lookin at the 2s records. Even in Scotts hay day, in he wiz good then, but nothing compared 2 who Ricky has beatin in a short space at world level. Well done 2 Billy Nelson 2, Ricky was no1 near the fighter he was b4 he teamed up wif this guy. N records prove that :TU:

I just had to edit my post as i had said Simpson in a rematch with Walsh, the vodka i drank before the fight somehow confused my brain between Simpson and Appleby. No-one ripped me a new arsehole for making a mistake which is a first for on Boxrec although i did receive one text message abusing me for saying it.

Personally I would like to see Burns go to the states and fight a huge name, if he was to lose then it wouldnt be a disaster as there would still be plenty on offer for him in the UK to build his profile again. For example if he got a fight with Broner and lost then he could come back and fight Harrison, Rees, Murray, Crolla etc. There would be lots of fights available to him which could raise his profile again although these fights would likely be harder to make with rival promotors if he no longer held a world title. On the other side of the argument, if Burns went and won in the states against a bigger name then even better.

Looking at Burns on the scales on friday left me thinking that we could possibly see him up at Light Welter and possibly even Welter at some stage. He's huge at the weight even after moving up.

I know we boxing fans don't like to admit it , but this is about making money . Ricky is up there with the best in the world at the moment but if he takes on any of the other 'champions ' and gets beat , and lets be honest none of them is Roberto Duran , he's practically finished making big money . It's back to 'marking time ' fights on somebody else's big bill . The sensible thing to do , and its not what I would want , is to keep fighting in Glasgow against opposition who are reasonable and who won't take too big a purse . He can then guarantee another 3/4 fights like last night and bank the proceeds .

By the way , Scott Harrison is finished . Reflexes gone , timing out and he was shutting his eyes and wincing everytime his opponent wound up to throw a shot . With hours of sparring the timing can come back a bit , the reflexes will never return . The wincing means he's shot . Nobody likes to see a former world champion reduced to this and I don't grudge him the chance to make some money but the first 'real' opponent will knock him out .

Fully agree; fighting a mandatory would be a nice change. There was a certain US fighter last year who was up for it but "weight problems" became an issue.

World Champions fight World Title Challengers, unless your on allegedly channel.

But matching with domestic challengers is simply a realistic expectation given his promotional and TV contract situation. If he is out in December it won't be an expensively imported belt holder, it will be a fringe name with limited local pulling power (Litzau, Zappavigna, Marsili) or a domestic opponent, preferably one already on the books of FWP (Walsh, J Murray, S Harrison, Mitchell rematch).

Ricky impresses me more every time he fights - he looked like a monster last night and would be a decent match for Vazquez, Broner (who will not wait around at Lightweight for long), DeMarco and Abril. My concern would be that those fights pass him by through no fault of his own and he treads water, Cleverley style. If ever a UK fighter deserved a big Vegas night, it is Ricky.

"weight problems" ?
Surely your having a laugh, Look at the size of Burns after moving up a weight and tell me you dont think he was struggling to make super feather?

The same guy you talk about as the challenger failed to make the weight recently, took a fine and lost his belt on the scales before deciding to move up a division. Would you prefer Burns had done that? What Burns done was what any true professional would have done, What Broner done was just ridiculous.

I personally think Broner is a level above Burns but I also reckon Burns would love a fight against him.

Thats if he loses of course, if he goes for it and beats one, then he catapults himself into the big time. If he is up there with the best out there, then maybe he should go for it. He's my favourite British fighter and i am slightly biased but i think he has a chance against anyone at the moment. Huge at the weight as well.
