What are the WBO doing - regarding Ricky Burns

Post by fightscorecollector »

http://www.wboboxing.com/statement-on-w ... -division/

Was Kevin Mitchell not the WBO no1 contender??

Are the WBO trying to force Ricky into the Broner fight???, Broner will probably fight DeMarco next so why make this daft statement about having to face the mandatory contender???. Take a guess who the 2 is??

Its Kevin Mitchell....so are the WBO gonna force Burns to face Miotchell again lol

Mitchell might be no2 at the mo but the rankings won't have been updated since the fight. I'd imagine Mitchell if he is to get back to a mandatory position would have to win a comeback fight and possibly even another meaningful fight to get a mandatory spot back. But the WBO are a bit like God they move in mysterious ways. I don't think Joe Calzaghe fought a mandatory for donkeys years and suddenly he got forced to fight Mario Veit in Germany (2nd time.) They seem to enforce mandatories willy nilly with no real stuff laid down that actually get enforced. The others can sometimes be a bit laxed with it but in general I'v found WBA, IBF and WBC champions do tend to have to fight a mandatory on a not too irregular basis. Champions certainly don't go 2 years fighting only voluntaries or not fighting at all.

They are quite right to comment that Harrison will not get a title shot as he isnt ranked. It would be a big joke.

About time he fought a mandatory instead or moving up in weights when forced to do so!

Mitchell was the mandatory mate. Buffer announced him as the WBO number 1 ranked contender

saying that i would love to see allegedly Promotions win a purse bid to force Broner over here, i dont think he would come

he will be fighting DeMarco anyway

Unfortunately in the crazy land of sanctioning bodies, being no 1 does not mean being mandatory - even though mitchell was no 1 he was never announced as being the mandatory challenger was he?

It seemed like a rather bitchy comment.

Do the WBO even have a lightweight mandatory challenger for him to fight?

Smokescreen. The mandatory will be cannon fodder ala Dimitry Salita against Khan. Allegedly will back the fight against the ''unknown quantity.'' Then he'll immediately denounce the fight, straight afterwards... ''we didn't even want this fight, but he was WBO mandatory... we had no choice... blah, blah, blah.''

You just wait until the rankings get updated.

My good friend Paco occasionally makes bold statements about fights not happening/being sanctioned which then happen. At least he's good enough to explain to me why things have changed though

Bunce's latest load of shite on ESPN

http://www.espn.co.uk/boxing/sport/story/171586.html

"If any of the other world champions or contenders had come to Britain and stopped Mitchell like that, we'd be proclaiming them as the best lightweight since X, Y or Z"

They did - Katsidis. If I remember rightly, all the talk was about Mitchell being poor, as he was against Burns.

"There seems to be some sort of online agenda which says "yes, he did well - but if he fought X or Y next, he'd lose"

It's not an online agenda, it's just what some people think. Online has got fvck all to do with it. Online is starting to become a bit of an 'agenda' with Bunce.

"I know Broner has a big online following - someone tried to tell me he was better than Burns because he had more Twitter followers - yet that counts for little"

Why is he even listening to, let alone repeating, 'someone' who tries to tell him something as daft as that?

"If you ask people about Adrian Broner, they give you a quizzical look and say "oh yeah, the guy whose Dad combs his hair in the ring". They don't hand out world-title fights for that."

They obviously do, because he's fighting for one in November.

"Broner v Mitchell, now that's a good bout"

Broner v Mitchell a good bout after what Burns did to him? do me a favour.

"For Burns, perhaps he could look towards John Murray: that would be a massive sell out. Broner can wait his turn."

This is anti-journalism, and it's bad for boxing. It's about time that the editors of some of the papers/sites he writes for started to have a good look at the biased, reactionary drivel that he taps up.

I want to see Burns vs Broner.

I certainly don't want to see Scott Harrison, some unknown or even Broner vs Mitchell.

I think Burns is the most improved British fighter over the last few years, but Broner would easily beat him imo. All the top guys seem tied up at the moment. Gavin Rees would be a good opponent, but isn't he meant to be fighting Richard Abril?

That's nuts. In their rankings, they have Broner at No 1, who is fighting for the WBC title, Mitchell at 2 and Bogere at 3, who is fighting Abril for the WBA title. How can he not be mandatory?

based on what? Broner should be 22-2 on what I've seen of him which would leave his best win being either a coked up Eloy Perez or Jason Litzau

yeah, watch out Ricky!

The Ponce De Leon fight was close & an unimpressive performance, but if you actually score it Broner won six rounds, I thought. Also, DPDL has just smashed Jhonny Gonzalez into pieces, which isn't a bad result anyway you look at it. Which other fight are you talking about, that Broner has "lost" in your opinion?

I would've thought that Broner being the only lightweight in the world who's gonna be the same size as Burns has a lot to do with people's estimation of his chances, added to his natural speed & power.

When Broner beats Antonio De Marco (who is tough & brave & willing but limited & slow), will you acknowledge him as number one in the division, based on beating a better fighter than Burns has ever faced (in terms of competition)?

:DD nice post mate, made me laugh! Looking at the peice, its possible to quote and laugh at almost every sentance he has written. Here's some more clangers from the same article:

"The Broner v Burns fight will not happen for a while: for starters, Broner needs to win the WBC lightweight title from Antonio DeMarco in November. If he gets his hands on that, then perhaps you can think about starting negotiations. But can someone tell me a reason why Burns should give Broner a chance? It makes no sense."

Err, to unify the titles and make a name for himself in the states, and make himself the man to beat in the lightweight division! and whats with the 'Burns giving Broner a chance' comment all about?

"Broner v Mitchell, now that's a good bout" :o

"Burns pulls it off, and for some reason people forget the fact it's a huge shock."

Burns was a clear favourite going in, prediciton polls were about 70/30 in his favour going in, and lets not forget Katsidis blasted him out with ease. Burns won easier than expected, but a huge shock it was not.

Piss poor reporting by Buncey on this occassion.

He ran from Prescott like his life depended on it, Katsidis ruined him with his first real attack, and Murray almost had him out during the early rounds of their fight, had he been a bigger puncher he would have done.

It was no shocker, his chins not the best, at this level he's proven vulnerable...... you may not have gotten it before, but i suspect Burns 'shock' ko win has awoken you to this fact, or do you need yet more evidence?

He out-fornicating boxed Prescott call it ran if you don't know what that means. Katsidis has ruined a lot of men with his attacks so still don't prove nothing and as for Murray almost getting him out of there? I can't really remember that part due Mitchell fuckin ruining him worse than Rios. Add to that Burns' Burns alarming lack of stoppages and feather fisted reputation then a four round stoppage was not on the cards..Revisionisim at it's best!

It was like watching a game of cat and mouse.

Katsidis has ruined a lot of men with his attacks so still don't prove nothing

What about now that he has been so easily knocked out by the so called 'feather fisted Burns'?

and as for Murray almost getting him out of there? I can't really remember that part
