Barry: Young Stribling

Post by Ric »

Strib W-10 Harry Dillon at Portland, OR, Nov. 4, 1927.
You had him W-6 Angus Snyder at Spokane.
Source: day-after TACOMA NEWS-TRIBUNE.

I made the change.

The Nov. 10 Strib-Dillon appears to be a dupe to be deleted.

Feb 9 vs. Kid Nappie--Strib boxed circles around Nappie.
Feb 15 vs. Tim O'Dowd--A “left uppercut” ended matters. A clean knockout.
Mar 30 vs. Dick Leonard--The article states that Strib had a slight lead going into the final round, but Leonard caught him flush and dropped Strip for the first time since turning pro. However, Strib was up and fighting when the final gong rang.
May 26 vs. Dick Leonard—Strib Wins Georgia Featherweight Title.
Jun 7 vs. Dick Leonard--Weights: Strib-128 ½, Leonard-127 ¾. An easy victory for Strib.

Oct 10 vs. Rabbit Palmer--Strib won every round except one.
Oct 25 vs. Joe Matranga--This was a toe-to-toe brawl. Strib had been criticized in the past for not taking any chances by boxing in a “shell,” but against Matranga he went all-out round after round until he was declared winner after ten rounds of crowd pleasing action.

1922
Apr 6 vs. Terry Nelson--Nelson went down six times in the last round, but the bell saved him from the knockout.
Jun 12 vs. Battling Budd--Weights: Stribling-145, Budd-140. Budd carried the last six rounds on aggressiveness.

Jul 27 vs. Frankie Lewis--Weights: Stribling-146, Lewis-156. Lewis was down twice.
Sep 29 vs. Jojo Johnson--Weights: Stribling-152, Johnson-158. Stribling put Johnson through the ropes with a left to the chin followed by a stiff right to the stomach; Johnson was out nearly four minutes. It was also stated that Johnson was the first southpaw that Strib had faced.

Aug 31 vs. Joe Burgman, EX 3--Strib also refereed a series of bouts that included fighters from “Pa” Stribling’s stable of fighters.
Oct 4 vs. Mike McTigue--Apparently this bout was for the Light Heavyweight Title. A lot of controversy involved in this match. McTigue, states that he was forced to enter the ring at gunpoint, even though his hand was broken prior to the bout. Referee Harry Ertle later issued a signed statement that he had originally ruled the decision a draw and did not reverse his decision proclaiming Stribling the victor, even in the face of threats that if he did not award the bout to Stribling, he would never leave the arena alive. He goes on to say that Maj. John Paul Jones, head of the committee of the American Legion that staged the fight was responsible for grabbing both his and Stribling’s arms and raising them in the air. Ertle said that Promoter Major Jones later came by his hotel room afterwards and threatened Ertle that he was being watched where ever goes.

Oct 18 vs. Steve Choynski--The Augusta Chronicle states that Stribling would have to cancel several dates in order to rest his injury.

1924
Jan 1 vs. Dave Rosenberg--Weights: Stribling-165 ½, Rosenberg-160 ½.
Jan 3 vs. Kid Numbers--An uppercut to the jaw put Numbers down for the count.

Feb 11 vs. Jack Schoendorf --Weights: Stribling-164, Schoendorf-160 ¼.
Mar 31 vs. Mike McTigue--Was it considered a title fight? McTigue was on the verge of being knocked out in the tenth, but weathered the storm. New Jersey ND laws states that a title can only change hands by knockout, or foul.
