Junior World Team Usa

Post by scallum »

Until the Next Round just posted The Schoolboy (13-14)Rankings for September. I'm very proud to announce my Son Sugar Suray Robinson Mahmutovic is now Ranked #1 @ 165. This kid is the hardest working fighter in the gym every single day very proud of him. Eagerly awaiting Jr Olmpics next year. Suray has fought 4 kids in the luuast year that were Ranked #1 at one time or another.

Other kids who could be future Stars from Schoolboy Rankings are Jose Burgess(spelling) #1 @ 154 southpaw with mad skills think Of Benitez with some serious power. Oscar Chavez #3 @ 125 only reason he is #3 is I think he just moved from 119 this kid is utra agressive and is just too darn strong other kids , going be interesting see if he takes his power to 125. Some of these kids going be the ones we will be watching on the major networks in the future imo.

I can only speak of the fighters I have seen and Price, Benton, Borges and Mahmutovic have clearly dominated at tournaments I saw and swerve to be #1 in their divisions. I saw on some other site some coaches were extremely bitter cause their kids got beat or their kids did not make the rankings. Some of those coaches should spend less time complaining and more time on becoming better coaches. I don't think they count the minor tourneys like Desert Showdown . I think the fighters have to be dominate at the Major Tournaments to be ranked. Theses guys go thru a lot of trouble and they work fighters all around the world once kids get to the Jo'.s. The divisions I know the rankings are on point

Actually the guy who puts these together does a lot of research and his process if very analytical. I have talked to him about the process and it's not just him throwing a bunch of names out there. He does it month. He does it for the entire world. He's out of the UK, but is abreast of what is going on throughout the world. Of course it's not perfect because he is just one guy. But to get on his radar is an accomplishment in and of itself. Anyone who is mentioned should be proud for sure. Just my two cents.

Yea, but unfortunately the rankings were off quite a bit - some of the kids have not even competed in most of these weight classes, and most of them did not even attend, moreless advance, or win any of the three major national tournaments (2012 Silver Gloves, 2011 National PAL and 2012 National Golden Gloves) - nevertheless this schoolboy ranking will certainly motivate them to do better and give it there all at future tournaments...................it certainly will be interesting to see how their futures will progress.

I'm speaking of the kids that are ranked #1 and the 4 or 5 wei ghts I'm familar with , the right kid is #1. 147, 154 n 165 rankings seem to be pretty much in order. I saw someas of the lighter kids at Silvers and or Jr GG and Right kids are #1. These folks do a excellent job on the rankings and as I said the weights Im familar with are on point. Im super excited to see some very interesting Matches at 154 ,125 and 119 this year at Silver Gloves and J.O. There also could be a Very interesting Couple of Kids who are The Great Grandsons of Jack Johnson who may burst onto the National scene.

Mark Castro was ranked #8 back in july, i don't know what he did over the summer? Did he do Jr Golden Gloves? Edit. I just checked Mark Castro did win Jr Golden Gloves at 11-12 . I think they may have changed the age requirements to 13-14 for the rankings.

The age groups used in the rankings are
Youth Born 1994 & 1995
Junior Born 1996 & 1997
Schoolboy Born 1998 & 1999
These are the internationally recognised groups as laid out in AIBA regulations
Marc Castro was born in 1999 and most of the boxers listed above him were born in 1998 so he would be conceeding age which at this level can be huge. As an example David Navarro won the 12/13 age group at the Silver Gloves while Castro competed at 11/12 in the Ringside .He will be ranked highly in 2013 when the age groups alter and schoolboys will be those boys born in 1999 & 2000.
Instead of taking cheap digs if you have a query on any of the rankings address them to the boys at the website and they will be attended to.US rankings are extraordinarily difficult to compile because USAB does not follow AIBA rules in its tournaments. In order to rank Youth/Junior/Schoolboys it is necessary to identify the birth year of every single boxer under nineteen in the United States. This is close to impossible and requires extreme research.
The two posters who moaned were sent PM'S requesting facts to back up their claims-both declined to respond

................I am not taking digs at the rankings, but the facts are INCORRECT. If you do the research on each kid, you will agree, specifically if you are using the 2011 National PAL, 2012 National Silver Gloves, and 2012 National Golden Gloves tournament results (these are the only tournaments credibly recognized by USA Boxing.) What groups are you referring too with respect to the AIBA standards ? No disrespect implied, but if people are going to be ranking our kids, they should state their facts and research, so the rankings are not questionable. Don't you think that is fair ? Again, all the kids are great and they deserve recognition.................they all have a bright future

I thought Mike explained everything in full detail in the above post? If you have a weight ranking you thinknk is unfair then maybe you could be direct and let folks know. 147-178 are in good order and some of the lower weights i have seen compete the #1 guy in their rankings is the best fighter. I don't think folks realize the extreme difficulty in doing theses rankings but it is really great for the kids to have the extra motivation of competing and protecting their rankings

Constructive criticism is welcome but negative criticism is pointless,it only serves one purpose.
If either of you have specifics you want to discuss then do so,otherwise keep quiet.I am not going to debate this on a public forum.
I use all of the tournaments quoted plus several more such as the Ringside,Junior Olympics and others.
Inevitably this probably comes down to one boxer not being ranked high enough for his coach or parent
Thanks to Scallum and DC who understand whats involved.

Again, if you read my post I am not being critical, excuse me for not agreeing with you, I thought this was a forum where we can discuss boxing maturely and civily and most of all in good will; and the main issue here is "what research did they use to base their rankings." You definitely have not given a detailed explanation, but be negative to my post. Again, I suggest you do the research, and you will see that most of these kids have not even fought in these weight classes, and the weights posted are of yester-year. I am not a parent or a coach of any boxer, but I am a national benefactor of several boxing clubs. I see how hard these kids work, so I think they all deserved to be ranked correctly...................nothing wrong with being fair, so stop trying to undermine my good intentions.

these rankings really dont even matter its one guys opinion....if your a good boxer you will be known by the officals and coaches in your lbc.....but i do have to give mike credit for caring enough to try and rank these kids its an impossible job to do correctly as you can see ...and as far as using tournaments for your rankings thats not good u get kids that go there and win 1 fight and get called national champion .......beat a loaded bracket thats a champion

Of course they should use the tournaments as rankings , that is where the best kids fight. The Silver Gloves in particular where fighters may have to go thru multiple champion vs champion just to make to the Nationals. How else would they do the rankings if they did not use the majors tournaments, on top of that they have to verify the year born of each fighter, on top of that they have to keep up which weights growing boys are moving to. Kids also fight and grow between tournaments,My kid jumped from 145 -154-165 after the Silvers Gloves , he was just doing little local shows and I have no ideal how the folks doing the rankings knew he had jumped up in weights and he was ranked @ 154. These kids will be fighting for spots on Olympic Team very soon , folks should just try to improve their kids skills and be proud if they are ranked,if not ranked then just work harder to make folks notice

yea but most kids cant afford to go to these tournaments so you dont always get the best u get whoever showed up so really your just being ranked on who could afford to go not on being the best in your division..and silver gloves is a goid tournament .

.....................boxingcoach80 your making this way too personal on your part........................98% of the time to get to the National Silver Gloves is not an easy walk-over effort, please do not minimize all the hard work these fighters put-in, to win this prestige tournament. As for money, there are a lot of organizations and people in general who are willing to sponsor good fighters and prominent boxing clubs, so the kids can attend these tournaments yearly. All it takes is a lot of hard work, sacrifice, and persistence on behalf of the coach and his boxing club to get the right sponsors......................there is no excuse why a good boxer cannot attend these credible tournaments to advance his amateur boxing career.

As for the rankings, I still hold my ground that it is crucial that the rankings be accurate and correct, and that the person or persons doing the rankings state their facts, so the rankings are not questionable. We want the right kids to be sent to the next Olympcis - that is the purpose of our organization....................we want to see GOLD again, not one gold medal, but several gold medals.

I am optimistic that most of these kids, the ones that were ranked will bring back our Gold Glory of the 1980s.................a lot of these kids have great talent, and heart...............and we will continue to sponsor them to make their dreams come true. It's a win-win situation for everyone !!!!

If a kid is good enough why wouldnt The Lbc or other organizations send him to national Silvers? I was at the Finals and kids 165 and down I did not see any kid fight just one time to become national champion. Plus how do you know how many times the kids have to fight to win their ,half state, State, and Regionals just to make it to the Nationals? The kids that win the Nationals Silvers should be celebrated for their talents and hardwork, not diminished by coaches who's kids did not win. My kid came up short in National Silvers so instead of Complaining we just redoubled our efforts putting in major hard work and soundly beat a 3 time National Silver Gloves Champion at the Jr Golden Gloves

Mike is not getting paid to do this and he has always explained his reason/logic behind the selections when asked. He's been open to HELP if there is anything that needs to be changed or not up to date. But geez man, don't complain about someone attempting to do this because I can't tell you that even USAB or AIBA is attempting to do what he's doing. I know that most people's intentions mean well but having people complain about something that they aren't even helping with kills me. There is a difference between criticism and constructive criticism. I tried to let it just roll off my shoulders but it's one of the reasons that I just gave up and stopped spending my time traveling and recording. No one wants to help but everyone has an opinion AFTER the fact. Jonathan's FrontPage Boxing was THE BEST resource for amateur boxing and he had to shut it down because people weren't supportive including USAB. It's funny that what FPB and I were doing for free now USAB is making money off of and streaming the fights live. I'm very happy about it and if it took others trying to promote the sport first to get the orgs with the $$$ to do it right to actually step up--I'm all for it. Mission accomplished. Now you have others like John Brown doing it as well. But John did put up all the videos for free afterwards. Great promo for the sport.

So as far as Mike goes, just help him out with information and that will make the rankings better. I guarantee you there is NO ONE on the planet who is willing, able or has proven they can do better. So, let's keep it going and help him out by offering info to make it that much more accurate.

We all love this sport!!

You jumped right in saying the rankings are a joke in a public forum. Price , Benton, Borges and Mahmutovic are the best fighters in the country and deserve to be #1 ranked. The other kids I have not seen but I'm sure they worked really hard to get their rankings. The Good folks who do the rankings are investing a Tremendous amount of unpaid time to rank kids all around the entire planet. I saw on some other site a bunch of bitter coaches being critical of Kids accomplishments, those who work the hardest will get the glory. I plead with folks to stop saying things like the rankings are a joke because that is unacceptable and not true , it takes a big dump on kids accomplishments and it could make the Good folks stop doing the rankings. Thank-you
