Barry Michael tribute

Post by Bricks »

G'day! :TU:
strewth that barry michael was good until he got a bloody hiding from rocky lockridge.
Where do you blokes (and sheilas) rate Barry on the all time aussie list? Obviously u got lionel and Anthony to consider, and spunker Osullivan was a good boxer of the turn of the century but i dont expect many of u to remember him

Handy fighter, won a world title, I'd say he's just outside the top ten, along with Lester Ellis

all is good having to consider Lionel, but Anthony, give me a break. Barry was, and still is a champion. Fought some absolute wars and took on some great fighters. Without disecting the the history of Aust boxing I have him rated around the ten mark....

Very good interview with Barry from only a day or two ago. Gives his views on a host of topics.

Bit rich to call him a "Pom" when he came to Australia as a two year old. Barry was as tough as nails. He was Commonwealth Lightweight Champion and Australian Super Lightweight Champion before becoming World Super Featherweight Champion. Barry would fight anybody.

Not to mention Jimmy Carruthers, Les Darcy, Young Griffo, Johnny Famechon, Dave Sands, Ron Richards, Fred Henneberry, Ambrose Palmer, Jack Carroll.

Who the hell was Spunker O'Sullivan?

A lot of people have forgotten what a warrior Michael was. As you said, he would and did fight anybody.

The loss to Lockridge was Barry's 60th fight and his first loss in 5 years.

A very much underated fighter. Particularly by the Johnny come lately fans who rank fighters they have never seen by how many dime a dozen alphabet titles they have collected.

I never knew to this day that was his 60th fight in a long career. TBH as a pig ignorant kid i thought to meself that Barry he took a real hiding a real leathering. he looked like a gargoyle. It was like Rocky beat the spunk out of the poor bloke. But at the end they were mates and had their arms around each other in the ring and they had a tinnie after the fight so i thought fair do's
