Fwank Warren & Eddie Hearn trade blows

Post by ALI »

Nice little spat going on between Hearn and Warren. Hearn kicked it off earlier on when he had this to say:
Promoter Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Sport is ripping out at his domestic rival, allegedly, over comments made in a separate interview. Hearn claims Warren is using Carl Froch's name to promote WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly.

A few weeks ago Warren made an offer to Hearn for Froch to move up in weight to face Cleverly - but he says Warren knew the fight would never happen because Froch has a contractual commitment to fight Lucian Bute in a March rematch and the Nottingham star has no intention of moving up in weight.

"He knew that because of our obligation to Lucian Bute and because of the weight - the fight would never happen. He's living on a different planet. He's a dinosaur. I've seen him in interviews recently saying 'why would I sit down and talk with Eddie Hearn, I've been in this business for years and years and years.' He may know more about boxing than me, but I guarantee I know more about new-age promoting than him......and how to promote a show, how to get the fans excited, how to build an atmosphere and give the fans of today, of the modern age, what they want," Hearn said to iFilmLondon.
Warren fires right back
By allegedly

Eddie,

It’s the ‘Dinosaur’ Old School Promoter here.

Just seen your recent interview with IFilm London. Once again you felt compelled to reference me, several of my fighters and allegedly. You stalking me?

What’s with this ‘New Age Promoting’? I’m not quite sure what is meant by this term, but I do know what Promoting is, delivering great fights for the fans and putting bums on seats.

Recently FWP have given the fans proper quality showdowns including Groves v DeGale, Mitchell v Murray, Cleverly v Bellew, Burns v Katsidis, Helenius v Chisora, Klitschko v Chisora, Burns v Mitchell and of course, Haye v Chisora – all virtual sell outs. How does that compare with your shows over the same period?

I think even in your hearts of hearts, however ‘New Age’ you may be and even with your BIG Sky budget, you would have to admit that other than Froch v Bute, you have not delivered anywhere near as many big live audiences or fights of that calibre over the same period and I’ve not included the small hall classics such as Walsh v Appleby amongst others.

I’d like to know what was so awful with my “Horrendous offer” for Gavin Rees to face Ricky Burns for his WBO World Title the ExCel in December?

The offer we made to Gavin for the fight was £50,000 with three options, which had been improved with a final offer of £60,000. You said Gavin will be earning more for his next European title defence – I’m sure he will be pleased to hear that he will be getting more than £60,000 for his next European title fight.

He was promised a shot by you at the WBA title, but despite being number 2 in their rankings it didn’t happen and he is now missing out on a huge opportunity to fight Ricky Burns. My offer is clearly anything but a ‘Horrendous offer’, something your Director of Boxing, an honest man, with years of experience, said was a “Great offer”.

Gavin previously won the WBA World Title with me and you have turned down a chance for him to become a 2-Weight World Champion and again, you have deprived the fans of a good old domestic battle.

Let’s also touch on the ‘options and allsorts’ section of your statement. Everybody knows in boxing that other than a mandatory defence, it is normal that options are given to the promoter of the Champion, just like the options you signed when Froch, the mandatory challenger, fought Bute. I would like to ask you this question – have you taken any options on Yusef Mack for his IBF World Title challenge against Carl Froch next month? And indeed, have you taken options out on any previous fighters? I think we both know the answer to that.

The fact remains that you preach that it’s the fighters’ interests at heart that you have, and that may be, but I suspect this pattern of rejecting big purse offers and big opportunities has more to do with you worrying that you will have no fighters left to run with on Sky. Perhaps the ‘exclusive’ dates you have secured are more of a hindrance to fill than you expected?

Two years ago, before I told him I no longer wished to promote him I offered Kell Brook, in writing, two chances to fight for a World Title – you went on record stating he will fight for a World Title within a couple of fights – that was two years ago! Only recently you turned down an offer for Brook to face Timothy Bradley, again for a career best purse. Why so many eliminators Eddie? He was WBO number one two years ago? Is ‘New Age’ promoting about turning down World Title fights for your boxers in favour of servicing a TV deal?

As for Carl Froch, my offer was genuine and as I have said on record many times, I fancy Nathan to beat him. The fact remains that it was another huge fight and a big payday for Carl that you rejected and not as you are suggesting now for a fight to take place before the Bute fight but after. £1million – I know he hasn’t made that money in any fight with you and again what of the fans? I am sure they would much rather see Cleverly v Froch rather than Froch v Mack and Nathan fighting Uzelkov.

You’ve now rejected three big World Title fights for three of your fighters (Brook, Froch and now Rees). This rejection pattern you’re developing, in my opinion, is not good for the sport. TV deals are important but not as important as delivering for your fighters and for the fans that want to see the big events. You seem to talk so often about doing things for the fans but from where I am sitting, you stopped them from seeing three big fights. Is that the New-Age agenda?

New Age? Us old guys, especially the Hall of Fame Promoters like to keep it simple – make the big fights and put bums on seats.

Regards,

‘Dinosaur’

Got to hand it to Fwank, he fights his corner well.

Just what does Eddie have to say about rejecting world title fights for Rees and Brook? Is Fwank onto something suggesting Eddie has a conflict of interest? Could it be the REAL reason these fights have ben turned down? The Bradley rejection for Brook is baffling many people, and Fwank seems pretty confident Ree's wont get a sniff at 60k anywhere else anytime soon, i'm inclined to believe him.

"I do know what Promoting is, delivering great fights for the fans"

Says the man who staged classics such as Enzo Mac vs Bobby Gunn and who has a history of promotions where the fights that happen differ dramatically from those initially advertised...

Whatever you say about Warren, Sky boxing is getting a bit stale with a single promoter. I feel I'm being force fed Matchroom. How many times can they have "At Home With Kel Brook's Mam" ? Matchroom and Sky are investing so much in Brook, Frampton and Bellew. Is there a Plan B if it starts to unravel ?

im a fan of both but i think Hearn is being over rated in some quarters, what fights has he actually delivered recently that are that great - froch v bute, brook v jones and barker v martinez and the prizefighters. Froch was already fighting the best before Hearn got there.

Warren delivered Haye v chisora, Audley v Price (with maloney), Clev v Bellew, Burns v Mitchell big domestic level fights and a truly world wide interest heavy weight fight; fights that would be considered hard to make. Plus he's given us all the recent klitschko and many of the US super fights through his channel.

In the future who are the big fights going to come from hearn or warren?

I aint saying the Argentine is going to be the second coming of Tommy Hearns. But I don't think Bobby Gunn was rated top 15 by the WBC, IBF and WBA.

I live in hope James , if Tony B comes in with his A game I reckon the Argie is getting an early flight back to a buenos aires building site.

My worry with all this is that when it becomes obvious to sky its not working at some point in the future , rather than attempting to fix the situation they may well just dump boxingg from their schedule .

Personally i think its more likely that hear tried to cut a deal with sky such as "you give me more dates and ill do them cheaper" typer of thing

That may turn around and bite him on the ass one day if it is the case .

Thats why i hope it does work because if it doesn`t then i could see them dropping boxing completly.Sky should of given Hearn less dates and kept Hatton stable on.Hearn needs to get more headliners and get good fights for them and get good viewing figures. The last two shows did dissaponiting viewing figures unfortunatly.

zzzzzz come on Jason you're better than that. I'm sick of reading about Warren being tarred with the Enzo Macc - Bobby Gunn match. That was one of many poor matches Warren has made over the years but he's made many good ones too. Why can't we shift the debate onto Eddie Hearn for a change? It might even liven this place up.

What's your views on Hearn's part in letting Brook turn down Bradley and Rees turn down Burns? Just because Hearn looks the part and appears more transparent and accommodating than Warren, doesn't meaqn he'll ultimately be any better for British boxing. He's got a long way to go for me and sadly the monopoly that SKY have afforded him won't help his legacy. Hearn seems to spiel the same excuses as Warren, except he does it with a tweet and a smile on his face.

Warren certainly does make a good argument when he lists the good fights he has made (Burns v Mitchell etc) since allegedly came into exhistence.

Very good post Ben, thought provoking. The only thing I would add is that Warren once benefitted from the phenonem of the new kid on the block to the detriment of the then establishment. I agree the jury is still out on Eddie, but my over riding thought is that he needs to be given some time to see if the decisions prove to be good ones. Warren has also turned down good offers when it suited his man eg Khan vs Thaxton.

Ben, I think it's a perfectly valid comment given the sheer hypocrisy Warren constantly displays and the way he tries to rewrite history.
As for Eddie Hearn, the jury's out at the moment and I'm certainly no cheerleader in terms of thinking Hearn is everything Frank isn't. However, where I'll cut him some slack in the short-term is that at least he appears prepared to engage with his customers rather than treat them with the contempt that Warren has in the past.

They certainly do. This bullsh!t is why boxing is a minority "sport" these days. People are sick of fights not happening because of TV Channels, self-interested promoters and "options" on fighters.

ONE governing body has to take ownership and make these fights happen and if they dont fight each other then they dont get paid. Simples.

The fans are being ripped off because of the "he said, no but he said" arguments that happen daily in boxing.

It's like the Spanish League not letting Barcelona play Man City in the Champions League because the Premier League has their own TV channel and own teams who they want to play. Its total bollocks and the sport of boxing is dying because of this.

Id put allegedly and Hearn (the next guy for all the fans to despise) up for being Anti-Competitive as a crime against boxing. It's not limited to these guys obviously but the petty slights should stop for the good of boxing.

OK mate I take the 'customer service' point but outwardly Eddie seems more approachable. BUT I didn't buy the PR and his recent decisions regarding turning down quality fights for Brook and Rees don't bode well for the future. Nice guy or not, man of the tweets or poster pin-up, I'll judge him ultimately on the fights he makes.

Warren makes many criticisms of Hearn, some are tiresome but others are well made, particularly the one that Hearn has yet to really develop and guide a prospect to the top. It will be interesting to see how the new Matchroom Boxing gets on.

Sure mate that Eddie needs to be given time, I appreciate that. I just think this forum (and others) go from two extremes at times, from 'golden Eddie' and 'nasty Frank'. I think the truth is somewhere in the middle and that Hearn is getting a too comfortable ride at the moment.

The way some people are talking, you'd think Hearn was an altruistic cross between Andrew Carnegie and Mother Theresa. As far as I'm concerned Hearn has not delivered a "stellar bill, packed from top to bottom" (or whatever the promise was....) on any of his Sky dates since securing the exclusive deal. I agree with the poster who has concerns that if Hearn fails to draw in viewers we may see boxing disappear from Sky completely...

I'll draw up a scenario. Lets say Hearn accepted Mr Warren's offers on Rees fighting Burns, and Froch fighting Cleverly, as well as Brook fighting Bradley. And all 3 won (like I said all hypothetical). Hearn then has virtually no fighters because all 3 then have to fight for another promoter. Yeah ok he makes a lot of money from those fights and the subsequent fights they would have but come on guys, there's just way too much being taken from Matchroom there to make the big purses not worth it.

With the exception of Brook v Bradley which Brook clearly isn't ready for just yet I think I would definately turn down all the offers recieved from rival promoters that have been made public and the Brook v Bradley one I probably would too.

Hearn doesn't have enough top quality fighters.
He doesn't have enough fighters to justify his Sky monopoly.
He doesn't have enough fighters to enable him to deliver on the hype of "stacked cards, top to bottom".

I agree with most of w a r r e n s statement, except he chooses what suits him at the time, for instance when haye v chisora happened he made it clear he was not the promoter of that fight but just simply chisora's manager, now he put it on !
