As soon as I knew Shane was fighting Dane, I said Shane won't be able to fight on Smithy's show. It is widely believed that Earp had gambled heavily on Sharkey winning. In a later fight Fitzsimmons knocked Sharkey out in 2 rounds. There is no other record of Earp refereeing a fight, but he did become a boxing journalist.
