Needing a bit of help and advice...

Post by JDC »

...I'm currently volunteering for a charity which supports members of the community with some mental health issues, in a residential supported living environment. They are quite independent and are encouraged out into the community as much as possible (often on their own).

One of the men used to box when he was younger and is really interested in the psychobiology surrounding the sport. I've taken a few of my DVDs and magazines in for him and I've had a chat with the staff about the discipline, focus and tactical thinking involved in the sport. He's never even mentioned anything to me about brutal knockouts etc, as he's really interested in the marginal things like channelling emotions in a productive way in order to be successful. It makes him think about how the best use their attributes to the best of their ability and turn their weaknesses into strengths through increasing awareness of how opponents will try to exploit these things.

He's requested footage of Joe Louis, Holyfield and Ali. I have much of this footage already on my hard drive, but I don't know how to get it all onto DVD. Most of it I play using VLC Media player. If anyone could explain how to convert files, it'd be much appreciated and also which kind of blank CD is should use.

Once I know what I'm doing better (for getting this footage to him), I'm going to try and introduce some of the interviews of Jim Jacobs to him and other sporting psychologists. If anyone can recommend others like Jacobs I'd be very grateful, and so would he. The guys only 29 and I think he has enough time to turn his life around, if he can better channel his feelings.

Another of the guys is really into politics and has a very keen interest in political history, but by his own admission he's not had as much access to more relevant current issues. He's very, very interesting and understands concepts which have been evident through different stages of our social evolution. He used to get copies of manifestos when he was more independent, but hasn't known how to get them lately. I've been in touch with the major political parties for him and it looks like they're willing to help out, except the Lib Dems (who hung up on me lol). He understands his conditions and issues very well and believes that balancing his delusions is important and he strives to be more in the ''real world'', as he describes it. As you can understand he may have been repressed, and repressed himself, from the types of things which he has interests in (which being in care). I'm striving to help support him back to a more informed current view, whilst taking care to ensure his delusions aren't being reinforced in a topic which isn't black and white for anyone.

I'd like your thoughts, the management at senior levels have been very supportive of my stances on these two... but I'd like to know if anyone has any further advice or can help me out with the type of footage I'm after.

Please PM, or post here. Thanks for your time. :TU:

Both my Blu-Ray and DVD player support DivX. A single layer DVD disc (4.7 GB) can hold around 4.4 GB of data in this case AVI videos.

I can get 5-6 full length films on 1 single layer DVD disc in AVI format. Both my DVD player and Blu-Ray can play the AVI files from the disc without any problems.

It only takes about 5 minutes to burn over 4 GB of data. If you want to make DVD's in "DVD format" like the DVDs you buy in shops. It takes around 45 minutes to put 1 film on a DVD disc.

You can buy DVD players with DivX support for like £35.

If you get a DVD/Blu-Ray player which supports DivX that has a USB port. You can watch AVI's directly from a USB memory stick without having to use any discs.

I have a great video converter which will convert many formats like AVI,mkv,mp4,WMV,MPEG,MOV etc. I even use it to make AVI’s smaller so I can fit more onto a disc. It’s free if you "tweak" it. I'll send you a download link later on if you'd like.

Not sure if any of that helps, but this is what I do.

I'll send you my DVD burner and ripper too. They're "free" with a little quick messing around!

Any political speech or doctrine that features the word smithery of Mr Nicholas Griffin. We could get a vote out of your guy if you keep grooming him correctly. :TU:

Can I suggest the Oliver McCall breakdown at one end of your spectrum?
