I don't view a fight as one that should've happened when the two fighters weren't in the same division at the same time. In the case of Hagler/Spinks, Marv never fought as a light heavy. For instance, you never hear people lament that Chandler/Sanchez or Chandler/Pedroza never happened. Same for Monzon/Foster or Galindez.

People talk about Sanchez/Arguello, don't they?

There are enough people that moved up in weight to challenge the best at the next weight. Indeed Hearns, Leonard and Duran all stepped up in weight to face Marvin.

It's a fight that could have happened, Hearns himself asked Marvin if he would move up to 175 after he lost to Hagler. Hagler flatly refused and said "you do it". So he did, albeit fleetingly and a little later.

We hear about Sanchez/Arguello because Sanchez called Arguello out. Of course (and before Sanchez died), Arguello moved up to fight Pryor.
When do people talk about Chandler/Sanchez or Pedroza? Pedroza/Rosario (or Arguello)?
Hearns moved up to 175 to fight two beltholders, not Spinks, the undisputed champion. Hearns didn't even do that (fight for a light heavy belt) until 1987. There would've been no point to having a Hagler/Hearns rematch at light heavy, and Hearns moved right back to middle to fight Roldan.

Hm I think you've got the wrong end of the stick about the rematch and Hearns fighting Spinks. He was a light middle.

Do you not think that Hagler/Spinks would have been an interesting match and one that could have happened? Should is perhaps subjective but I suppose it depends how much you hang on the question about legacy.

You were comparing Hearns with Hagler, right?
Hearns moved up to 175; Hagler didn't.
But Hearns moved up and fought Andries. You're objecting that Hagler didn't fight Spinks. One was a beltholder. The other was one of the greatest light heavies ever.
