Yes obviously a massive name like Hatton will draw I was only comparing the following an average name could draw there which is precisely why Macklin has tapped into his irish roots!lillywhite14 wrote:Depends if the Englishman is Ricky Hatton I guess!dve3333 wrote:In fairness who would attract a bigger crowd to a show in New York, an Irishman or an Englishman? Truth is there is a massive Irish contingent there that love their boxing and its been proved time and time again that by getting with the right promoter who is in sync with the Irish American audience there marketing a mediocre "Irish" guy such as John Duddy can sell out arenas for fun.
So its hard to blame him for maximising his Irish heritage when the dollars will undoubtedly follow.
See where you are coming from though. I think it makes sense for Macklin to live up to the Irish thing. Those 1/32nd Irish yanks love it which means $$$.
Matthew Macklin! If you already didn't know..

Hatton was worse when he was pretending to be a Mexican.

Wasn't that Irish Michael Gomez?banjo wrote:Hatton was worse when he was pretending to be a Mexican.

Gomez did it but I remember Hatton rabbiting on about being like a Mexican and wearing a blue sombrero during one of his ring walks, might have been the Castillo fight.Ben Carey wrote:Wasn't that Irish Michael Gomez?banjo wrote:Hatton was worse when he was pretending to be a Mexican.

Look at someone like Sinan Samil Sam - the Bull of the Bosphorus, boxed for Turkey at high level as an amateur, yet born in Frankfurt.[/quote]
Judging by his age I guess his parents must have been Turkish gastarbeiters (guest workers) who came to Germany in the 1960s to help power the West German economy of the 1960s as they had shortages of labour and when the agreement with the Turkish government ended in 1973, rather staying home where there was little work they stayed on in their droves which has led to a Turkish community of 5 million and has seen football players like Mesut Ozil and Memhut Scholl being capped for the German national team.

It was indeed. But he changed his name in tribute to Wilfredo Gomez who was actually Puerto Rican as there was another boxer called Michael Armstrong on the Board of Control's list.Ben Carey wrote:Wasn't that Irish Michael Gomez?banjo wrote:Hatton was worse when he was pretending to be a Mexican.

First and foremost, I couldnt care less if Macklin considers himself Irish, British or Mongolian. Whatever he considered himself I would respect that. But this post is total bollocks!danconnollyeire wrote:As someone who is the 'same kinda Irish' as Macklin, it's only a recent thing! Going in to the Sturm fight he was 'British' and got the whole of the UK behind him. All of a sudden he's fight in New York on Paddy's Day so being of Irish hertitage got lots supporting and took it further. He forgot his nationality is English all together and kept urging Ireland to back him. He didn't urge the British fans to back him one. A little disrespectful
1. "it's only a recent thing!"
Well if he started playing hurling at underage level for a team in Tipperary just so he could sell a few extra ticket in case he became a professional boxer then he is a smarter man than even I gave him credit for.

2. "Going in to the Sturm fight he was 'British'"
Really? Thats a funny looking Union Jack he had carried into the ring then, and God Save the Queen had an unusual lilt to it as well.

3. "He forgot his nationality is English"
Firstly, he has an Irish passport. Secondly, shock horror "Fighter wants TWO tribes to back him in order to widen his appeal"
You probably didnt bat an eyelid when Chisora (who hasnt a single drop (or dropeen as we say in the ould country) of British blood in him and only arrived in Britain as a hairy-balled 6 footer) traipsed into the ring with full Butchers Apron regalia!
Enjoy!

I know its good marketing in america and Ireland, but come on! Most interviews, he has to bring it up! Don't forget The whole iv got paddy and shamos for fists at his Martinez press conference.. along with trying to speak Irish when he"s clearly got a brummy accent... its just cringe.. Don't get me wrong. I'm proud of my Irish heritage! But you don't see me walking about constantly wearing Guinness T shirts jamming to The Dubliners... Jesus I thought the yanks were bad...

absolute crock of shit
boxing was always non sectarian here, and Barry may have been a southern catholic, but he was never a nationalist, he's always been a brit, and doesn't hide that fact.
People can talk about Macklin all they want, but how come when an Irishman goes to England they become full force Brit? Graham Norton and Terry Wogan are fornicating cringeworthy doing the Eurovision voiceover and saying "us" and "we" every time the UK is mentioned. And by the way, what happened to their accents? Martin O'Neil rightfully did not want to wear a poppy, yet accepted an OBE.
That's as far as I'm going to go on this matter, lets not act like this crap is one way
Re: Matthew Macklin! If you already didn't know..
Possibly because 'we are rubbish' is more palatable to the viewer than 'you are rubbish'. I would imagine they are speaking on behalf of the BBC more than anything else.GreenLightning wrote:People can talk about Macklin all they want, but how come when an Irishman goes to England they become full force Brit? That's quite funny, he actually gets more Irish the more it goes on. I do that myself, mind, when I'm talking to people with a strong accent I find I subconsciously start immitating them. Particularly with scousers.
