I am including a chapter in a booklet which mentions prizefighters named Gardner, both American and British. Although I am of no known relation to any, I find my last name and boxing both interesting. Jack Gardner looks related the most.

I'm American, and asked an English fighter at the gym a few months ago if he had heard of Jack Gardner or John L. Gardner. He never heard of John L. Gardner. However, he said that Jack Gardner "rings a bell".

He was 6' 1, tall, dark and handsome. Gardner had KO power in both hands, as he showed when he knocked out Johnny Williams.

John L. Gardner, 35 - 4 (29 KO's) was the Heavyweight Champion of Great Britain, the Commonwealth, and Europe, and never lost a title fight. He was a pressure fighter. Gardner was tough and although not a one hit puncher, he knocked out Lorenzo Zanon with a clean combo for the title.

Chuck "The Viking" Gardner, 20 - 12 (8 KO's), was a 6' 4 journeyman who beat the likes of Jimmy Young and Mike White. However, he is sadly most notable for his loss to Frank Bruno due to a left hook, and he fought World Heavyweight Champions Trevor Berbick, John Tate, and Tony Tucker. He was not as horrible a boxer as the British press made him out to be, but he won and lost in even measure against mediocre boxers, an average boxer.

Chuck Gardner had 5 first round KO victories. The only ones who knocked him out in the first round were world heavyweight champions John Tate and Frank Bruno. He was out of shape and retired by 1987, but it is repulsive how Brits still ridicule.

World Welterweight Champion Paul Williams was knocked out due to a left hook also, but is not ridiculed for it, and there are plenty of boxers who have been knocked out 10, 20, 30 seconds into the first round with one punch, especially a left hook.

If allegedly was brave enough, he would have been knocked out cold in the first 5 seconds of the first round due to an ACTUAL glancing jab, if he didn't pass out before the fight started, and that goes for those who sit back and ridicule.

The Gardner surname means 'guardian', derived from Anglo - French, FYI. The others came from Germany with names like Gaertner. And Scottish clans.

George Gardner was the Light Heavyweight Champion of the World in 1903, being an Irish - American, and his father, Michael Gardner was said to have been an Irish prizefighter.

Chuck Gardner had 5 first round KO's, and was a journeyman, a medicore boxer. I've seen his fight against Tony Tucker, which wasn't a bad loss, but Tucker was making his debut although he had over 100 amatuer fights, and later became a world champion. The Bruno fight was ridiculous, and Chuck should not have been in there.

Like I said, there are plenty of fighters who have been knocked out in the first with one punch, and it does look ridiculous, but no need to keep ridiculing.

Henry Cooper never fought anybody that big, and allegedly is too much of a coward to fight, so they or any other critics need to get a life.

Any info on Chuck Gardner's amatuer career and was his nickname "The Viking"? I've heard he had Norse background.


Would any of you consider John L. Gardner, a gatekeeper, or a legitimate contender for the world title??
