Poor refereeing in last night's big fights
Cotto - Torres: how many low blows did Cotto land?? He got two warnings but there is justification for 2 points off....
Klitschko - Peter: really poor stuff... Klitschko was floored twice with punches to the back of the head (there is an argument that Wladimir turned away though and so is his fault), and Klitschko was possibly allowed to hold too much.
Am I being too harsh?

No you are not being harsh, plus the clear fact that Torres wasn't put down by a punch in the 4th. Also thought many a ref might have stopped it in the second, two minutes of a beating is what Cotto took. Many talked about the Reyes vs Cardnas fight - well that was 3 minutes of a beating, and many thought that went on for a couple of minutes too long (and I agree). I thought when Cotto sagged on the ropes about a minute a twenty into the beating he could have been stopped.E wrote:Cotto - Torres: how many low blows did Cotto land?? It was a little bit disgraceful though the refereeing of Klitchsko vs Peter, it was if the ref didn't mind the holding - did he warn him once?
The actions of the ref seemed to greatly assist Wlad. Peter could only be successful when close and the ref had decided that anything close must be stopped at all costs. Wlads holding and pushing down was ignored so I'm sure someone is happy with the ref but the punters weren't.
Cotto's low blow was cynical and came at a time he was in a lot of trouble. Tszyu dug a couple into Hattons nuts so Hatton hit the bullseye back, end of story. Maybe Torres should have returned the favour but as he didd'nt and the ref developed a blind spot, Cotto dropped a few more in. Not a good display by the ref on that issue.

Didn't see the Cotto fight, but I was surprised Klitschko got away with so much holding. On the other hand, other than trying to club Klitschko on the back of his head when he was turning away Peter didn't seem to have a plan to work his way out clinches, so maybe that's why the ref didn't say much about it.
Again I seem to be the one to differ.
The majority of Cotto`s punches landed on the waist of the belt..maybe one or two went a little lower but I can`t remember seeing one going as low as the groin...fighters are wearing their shorts too high nowadays.
I can`t remember what fight it was in now but quite recently I remember a referee saying before a fight where a legal punch would be allowed and he pointed lower than the waist of the boxers shorts.
I too though that Klitchko held too much and the ref again could have made it an issue.
I think Peter has been rushed and now needs to go back to the learning fights, Adam Smith likened him to Ray Mercer but I really hope he is not pushed into that position because he could develop into something for the future.

Klitschko turns his head and runs away as his defence,so of course he will be hit behind the head.probert24 wrote:Except for the every punch Peter landed... behind the head. Poor Refereeing By Newman!
Yes, Wlad was holding exessively. He deserves to be hit in the back of the head. That's the only thing Peter could do at the time anyways. Referee Randy Newman stunk.... He never warned Wlad of holding one time.... Unforgiveable.E wrote:Cotto - Torres: how many low blows did Cotto land?? He got two warnings but there is justification for 2 points off....

Disgusting!
If so, that is a disgrace. Waiting til the 11th round to warn a guy ,who starts holding by the 3rd or 4th round.... Disgusting!!Kevo wrote:Think Wlad was warned once for holding, in the 11th!!!!
as far as i know if you turn back it means you don't want to fight and the referee is forced to stop the fight in favour for your opponent.Cuban Lion wrote:Klitschko turns his head and runs away as his defence,so of course he will be hit behind the head.probert24 wrote:Except for the every punch Peter landed... behind the head. if that referee "Alonso" or whatever his name is , the one who's been bought by lacy's camp. If he ref'd this fight he would have disqualified Wlad for holding. personally i think holding is part of the sport, it has gone on for so long and thousands of fighters do it. only ruiz does it too much i.e all night.
Holding is part of the sport. It becomes illegal if that is all the fighter is basically doing but Wlad was throwing plenty of jabs etc so I don't think he stepped over the line really. Peter was very poor technically and just didn't know what to do... seems to have never heard of a jab or fighting inside.... and he seemed tired after the 3rd or 4th rounds!.
I agree, I was calling for it to be stopped in the second. Cotto was taking a lot of shots to the head and before Torres tired, wasn't offering anything back. Probably a knee jerk reaction after the Johnson fight though. The knockdown in the 4th was a joke. Also thought many a ref might have stopped it in the second, two minutes of a beating is what Cotto took.
Peter looked far too raw and I think needs a lot more learning fights before going back to this level. If Wlad wasn't so terrified he could have stopped him. Peter also could do with losing a lot of weight

How often is Ruiz holding and doesn´t get a warning at all?Kevo wrote:Think Wlad was warned once for holding, in the 11th!!!!
The first two "knockdowns" were no real ones. so they didn´t score it.
How often did Peter hammer the backhead of Wladimir?
All in all Wladi scored more and won with no bad taste. Peter scored less and did not that much.
good win for vlad but i think it masks the real issues, he is an accident waiting to happen, brittle and at times terrified. Thing is there isnt too much out therE to take advantage. every time he got hit clean he looked like he was gonna capiulate, though cedit to him for not doing so. A more skilled opponent may well not let up and have the skill to finish the job.BubiScholz wrote:How often is Ruiz holding and doesn´t get a warning at all?Kevo wrote:Think Wlad was warned once for holding, in the 11th!!!!

tell you what tho i reckon he should stay away form toney, depsite the reach advantages etc, i reckon toney would beat him in the press conference mentally.

Wladi has to deal with punches and how reacts. He should make some sparring sessions with e.g. Sinan Samil Sam who also hits very hard to train it. It´s hard to say with who Wladi could have problems. I still hope he fights Luan and that would give him more problems like Chris Byrd or Toney who have no big punch. Luan knows him and beat him at the Amateurs and has at least tzhe same fitness to box 12 rounds. But it depends on Wednesday.......Brewster is dangerous

Wlad held, but he didn't need too. Its all in his head. When Wlad stuck the jab in his face Peter couldn't do shit. Then Wlad started throwing his right hand, he got totally right hand happy and started to slug which let Peter in. If he would have boxed and boxed for most of the match Peter would have been sickened and ready to quit by the 11th. He could have beat Peter with one arm.
