Rogan beat Harrison and Skelton, yet Fury gets stick for fighting him.Giancarlo wrote:keithmoonhangover wrote:Nope. But it ain't gonna happen.Giancarlo wrote:Has Fury got a fight lined up?
Just wondered who they have lined up for Fury next.
Hope it's a step up from Martin Rogan and Vinny Maddalone.

We can spin these fights any way we like, Keith.keithmoonhangover wrote: Rogan beat Harrison and Skelton, yet Fury gets stick for fighting him.
Do you think it was a meaningful fight at the time?
How about Maddalone? What's your spin on that?
You'll probably say "Good learning fight" where I would say "Pathetic mismatch".
Still, it adds interest.

Ok, with that correction in mind, (and a bit more thinking), I can see Price defending British title 'til he can keep it. There are credible names to justify it and he wouldn't be 'moving up' against the likes of Vinny Maddalone. That would keep him busy until summer, and by then the landscape will look a little different.

Hopefully next year we see both their promoters announcing fights where we can really say "Hey, now that's a good 60/40 matchup!".
Re: Price - Skelton Poll
Neven Pajkic, with no real amateur pedigree, and less than 20 fights, smacks Fury with one punch and very nearly knocks him out. David Price will totally dismantle Fury and they know it. The powers that be will keep them apart until Fury runs out of old guys to fight.

One of the old guys already beat Price's last and next opponent. WHo's fighting the worse fighters?Cap wrote:Neven Pajkic, with no real amateur pedigree, and less than 20 fights, smacks Fury with one punch and very nearly knocks him out. Re: Price - Skelton Poll
would be a nice learning fight i think for price, skeltons not the best or youngest and can understand why people would be against this fight but hes a former world title challanger although nearly 5 years ago but would make price fight and make it an ugly fight but can only see one winner price in 5.

Matt Skelton would give it a go but at 45/46 he is just too old. The only British fight for Price is against Fury but both sides need to sort out the management issues. I hope it happens, I really do, its the fight we all want to see.
Re: Price - Skelton Poll
I think it's a good learning fight as though he should win Skelton has the guile to give him rounds and make the fight ugly, something useful for ex amateurs to experience.
I was really impressed by Prices finishing instinct vs Harrison. I think he has the potential to be a world champ. My question to you all is.. How would you match him over the next 18 months to get him there?

Fury was nowhere near being knocked out by Pajkic. Skelton lost to a peak (not physical peak but the Harrison and Skelton fights were his peak) Rogan who was fighting on a reasonably regular basis. Fury fought him when he had been out the ring for 2 years. And if you proclaim Rogan as a good opponent based off the fact he beat Skelton then you have to turn it around and say Price knocked seven shades out of Sexton who stopped Rogan twice and ended his good run of form.keithmoonhangover wrote:One of the old guys already beat Price's last and next opponent. I like the idea that there was such a thing as a "peak" Roganjameswilson wrote:Skelton lost to a peak (not physical peak but the Harrison and Skelton fights were his peak) Rogan who was fighting on a reasonably regular basis. Re: Price - Skelton Poll
It's a tough one. If Price was three or four years younger, I'd say this was a decent fight.
The problem is, Price is powerful but still looks quite raw. He needs to be gaining experience before moving up. Fighting a guy like Skelton is fine, as though he's old, he'll turn up and try and make it a hard night's work for Price. He's not going to win, but will hopefully give him a few rounds in.
I had nothing against the Audley fight, per se. If nothing else, it gave Price some publicity as Audley is a name. (Despite not being very good.) Boxing the way it is today, world title shots are awarded as much on the person's ability to draw a crowd than anything else. Gaining fame at this stage of his career isn't a bad thing.
The problem is Price is 29 not 25, and needs to get a move on. He had far too long a layoff after fighting Sexton and should have fought Audley two three months after beating Sexton, and should've fought Skelton on Saturday night. Leaving the date in December open for the Lonsdale belt winner. That way 2013 could've been about moving up to European level and getting four or five fights in at that level next year.
Or too put it simply. He needs these learning fights, but needs to be having them a lot quicker than he is.

Re: Price - Skelton Poll
I actually wouldn't mind seeing Matt in with any British Heavyweight accept David Haye and David Price.
I think Matt keeps in good shape and generally, stylewise, gives people tough fights. However, that chin isn't what it was.
Price wins the first time he lands clean - might even be in the first.

Re: Price - Skelton Poll
On its own it's a bit "Meh", but taken in the context of Price having gone fewer than 6 rounds since June last year, being for the Lonsdale outright and Skelton looking in better shape than at any time over the last 5 years, this is perfectly fine.
Matt is a pressure fighter who brings a different set of problems than the likes of Audley, Sexton and McDermott, and you don't often see him get blown away.
A win in this fight and Price can reasonably say he's done everything he can at domestic level (The Tyson Fury fight notwithstanding) and can look on to the European title. I can see Pulev vacating for a shot at some kind of world title, so maybe a fight for the vacant belt against someone like Helenius, Dimitrenko, Boytsov or Sosnowski?

Re: Price - Skelton Poll
Um, no mate, I certainly wasn't. The Audley fight was always a horrendous match and I always said Price would learn nothing from it. Plenty of people said so:diggler wrote:Adamj1987 wrote:As bad as audley
Before the fight everyone was saying it good match up for either Price or Fury, Price destroys him in a round in front of 8000 (how many British title fights get that) and its shit matchmaking everyone's a genius afterwords. As for Skelton its a good keep busy fight at 8 weeks notice Price clearly wants to win the belt for keeps as quick as possible so he can move on to European level.
Lets look at the possibilities
Haye- Never happening
Chisora- Suspended
Fury- T.v complications
Towers- Limited and if the fight did get made people on here would go mad
Sprott- Suspended
Sexton- Beat
McDermott- Beat
Rogan- Past it and Price wouldn't take the fight after Fury beat him
Whyte- To inexperienced
Dallas- Beat
http://boxrec.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=152353
This fight is exactly the same. Complete waste of time.
And yet, I can guarantee that as it gets closer, people will be pulled in by 'Skelton's a former world title challenger', 'Skelton's a brawler, what if he drags Price into a war?' - This will be over inside 3 rounds.
He's more than ready to move on. He'll still need to box another Brit after this to keep the Lonsdale, that's no excuse. There's plenty of decent fighters out there he could fight - Helenius, Dimitrenko, Sosnowski, Chambers, Johnson, Ustinov, etc - and that's without fighting any of the undefeated contenders (Helenius isn't really undefeated).
He's way past 45 year old Brits who've never been near his level of ability anyway.

Re: Price - Skelton Poll
I would bet on Price stopping Skelton. Rogan managed to do so several years ago, and besides the obvious fact that Price hits a lot harder than he does, Skelton does not have much of a defence and is even older now. The McDermott fight showed also that Price can knock out guys coming in with the uppercut as well as the short right hook he KOd Sexton with - I don't see how Skelton keeps from getting hurt and stopped, either up close or at a distance.
Re: Price - Skelton Poll
Pulev stopped Skelton in 4 rounds so i expect Price to do the same

Re: Price - Skelton Poll
Price fighting Skelton is a complete and utter disgrace to professional boxing in this country. On the one hand you have a very big, capable British champion who is going places and on the other you have an old guy who 5 years ago was tough, and now he's completely gone. This is all about money. Skelton gets another payday, the TV company gets another date filled , Frank Maloney gets his 25% and Price gets somebody else who he really doesn't want to fight.
I'm sorry to say this, because it gives me no pleasure, and I liked the bravery and toughness of Skelton years ago, but the boxing public and David Price would get enough entertainment and experience watching the big Liverpudlian punching the heavy bag.
Surely there is no one in British boxing circles thinks this is a worthwhile exercise. Audley Harrison and Matt Skelton in quick succession you've got to be joking!!! I haven't seen the Boxing News this week obviously, nor have I seen Ringside and I know Glynn Leach reads this forum but these people MUST come out against this total mismatch.
Why not bring back Joe Bugner from Australia - he'd put up a better show than Skelton!
I'm really on a rant now ,but who do these people ( promoters, managers and TV executives) think they are ? Do they think the paying public are a bunch of mugs??

No, it isn't.dalcumly wrote:Price fighting Skelton is a complete and utter disgrace to professional boxing in this country.
Skelton is a top 10 British fighter, this is a decent defence of the British title for Price.
Isn't it better that he fights them in quick succession rather than having a 5 month gap in between fighting them both?dalcumly wrote:Audley Harrison and Matt Skelton in quick succession you've got to be joking!!!
