Did Audley try and take advantage of a depressed Bruno?
Around ten years ago Audley was calling out Frank Bruno, even going as far to have a big rumble with Herbie Hide ringside over the matter.
A few weeks later it transpired that Frank was in trouble, and the reports said this was well known around London.
From the outside looking in it always seemed that Audley was trying to take advantage of a man who was suffering a breakdown. Then again, I am not from London, and consequently have no idea of the real story, how bad people knew Frank was ect.
Anyone got an opinion?

Bruno would have still knocked him out. This is in hindsight now.thepocketrocket wrote:Around ten years ago Audley was calling out Frank Bruno, even going as far to have a big rumble with Herbie Hide ringside over the matter.

McCall was always a bit unstable, he was coming down of drugs most of the time, but was doing full training camps.
Bruno was long retired and people apparently knew the breakdown was in the the post. Think it is a bit different
Re: Did Audley try and take advantage of a depressed Bruno?
That's true about McCall who would have thought back then though that The Atomic Bulls career would still be going today and still at a decent-ish level too, still don't think he's been knocked off his feet yet either.thepocketrocket wrote:McCall was always a bit unstable, he was coming down of drugs most of the time, but was doing full training camps.

Re: Did Audley try and take advantage of a depressed Bruno?
did marciano take advantage of joe louis? did holmes take advantage of ali? did tyson take advantage of holmes? the answer is yes but the thing is these fighters were all active apart from louis who had to come back for tax reason's,,bruno was retired and is a national hero to people who dont even like boxing, one thing about bruno is he always gave 100% and always tried to fight back, can the same things be said about fraudley? fraudley did try to take advantage of the situation, acting like he was some big star of boxing. when people look at bruno they see a former world champion who wore his heart on his sleave and made people laugh, when people look ad audrey harisson they see a man who is full of talk but never backs it up,i will never watch another fight of his as long as i live. and for the record bruno would smashed him in 4 rounds.MachoMan09 wrote:Did Lennox take advantage of a depressed Oliver McCall?thepocketrocket wrote:Around ten years ago Audley was calling out Frank Bruno, even going as far to have a big rumble with Herbie Hide ringside over the matter.

Re: Did Audley try and take advantage of a depressed Bruno?
I don't think he did. Bruno may have genuinely thought he would be doing something great for himself by coming back and fighting, and Audley may have thought he would be doing him a favour. Bruno was 41 at the time; fighters have come out of retirement older than that and won a couple. Without any evidence as to what Audley's state of knowledge was concerning Bruno's affairs, it's impossible to categorically say that he was 'taking advantage' of his as-yet-undiagnosed mental illness.

Re: Did Audley try and take advantage of a depressed Bruno?
Bruno, like so many, had struggled with life after boxing and he thought the answer to his problems was to box again. The comeback was his own idea, he announced it to The Sun and targetted Harrison himself. Harrison responded to the challenge and thankfully no more came of it. There was certainly no "taking advantage" of anybody on Harrison's part. There are parallels between Bruno's attempted comeback and Ricky Hatton's scheduled one. Hatton's psychological struggles in retirement have been well documented; does that mean Senchenko is taking advantage of him by accepting the fight?

I don't think Audley had a rumble with Hide either. Did Audley say to the crowd who shoudl I fight next Bruno or Hide and the crowd obviously chanted BBBBRRRRUUUNNNNOOOOO. Something kicked off when Hide stood on a chair but at no time did Audley get out the ring, he was screaming into the mic but didn't dare climb out the ropes.
I remember Bunce being interviewed after where people were saying Hide was spoiling for a fight and Bunce replied no he wasn't, he's wearing a $3000 suit, a $20,000 rolex, people don't wear that when they want a fight. About the only thing that Bunce has ever said that made sense!

I was there and close to that action. Hide was giving it verbals and Audley's then-girlfriend stood behind him on a table and was mouthing off and jabbing her finger in his back. He swatted her away without even turning around to look who was doing it, and she went flying off the table, legs akimbo. To those who weren't looking closely, it may have seemed like Herbie had hit a woman, and combine that with security comprising a bunch of Harrison's mates, and you have a recipe for disaster. It all kicked off, somehow Hide extricated himself from the melee, and was soon standing at the side of the hall on his own while a bunch of meatheads who had nothing to do with the original incidents continued whaling on each other. Later, at the post-fight party, I overheard the girl telling a group of guys that Hide punched her to the floor and then kicked her in the head when she was down.Dirk Kelly wrote:I don't think Audley had a rumble with Hide either. Re: Did Audley try and take advantage of a depressed Bruno?
I can remember Audley asking the crowd who should he fight next - Audley knew what the reaction would be. So I do think he was trying to get the fight with Bruno.... now not sure if that is trying to take advantage of a depressed Bruno. It could certainly be argued that his lack of boxing brought on the depression - and a comeback would have been a help.
Is Senchenko taking advantage of a depressed Hatton?

Re: Did Audley try and take advantage of a depressed Bruno?
Of course he was trying to take advantage. He was trying to set up a multi million payday off Franks rep. Anyone could see Franklyn looked gaunt weak and wasnt acting himself.thepocketrocket wrote:Around ten years ago Audley was calling out Frank Bruno, even going as far to have a big rumble with Herbie Hide ringside over the matter.

Yes Bunce did used to speak sense back in those days. A woman punched Hide and spat in his face and Hide defended himself
Re: Did Audley try and take advantage of a depressed Bruno?
1. Pay day
2. Discredit Hides calls for a fight
It was grabbing the mic after the fight that was the biggest problem that night.

I remember a pice in the paper about bruno asking for his licence because he wanted to fight audley so does that mean audley is taking advantage of a aguy who wants to fight?

In Bruno's book I remember him saying that Audley turned up to a few nights in support of Bruno, or something.

It wasn't the post fight party at all was it Oliver. Knowing the maverick life that you lead it was at the post fight orgy, and whilst you and Audley were spit roasting Audley's then girlfriend she gave the explanation of events that you described, very rudely with her mouth full. The dwarves by the bed handing out coke on silver platters overheard this and told P-Diddy, Beyonce and the Obamas who were at it in the next room and they in turn promised to get the Navy seals to carry out a covert military operation on Hide for such heinous crimes against humanity.oliverfennell wrote:I was there and close to that action. Re: Did Audley try and take advantage of a depressed Bruno?
Some fair points.
On the flipside Vitali or Wlad v Holyfield would make some serious cash in the States (when compared to the other contenders out there). The morons would see it as a real Rocky story. Wlad and Vitali have no intention of fighting Holy due to the fact they could seriously damage a man who is delusional and broke. And no-one sees Holy as being on the verge of a breakdown.
Just playing devils advocate BTW

Re: Did Audley try and take advantage of a depressed Bruno?
The time for a Klitchko-Holyfield fight was just after the Valuev robbery.
Since than for the first time in his career Holyfields physique has deterioted.
Also his speed and reflexes and timing have gone backwards.
Right now its far too late. Holyfield is 50.
The talk of Vitali being too respectful of Holyfield and not wanting to fight a guy he looked up to is utter nonsense on their part. They were spoiling to fight Tyson as recently as 2004-2005 for money and that Tyson was in poorer form than the Holy of 2008 who could still fight a little.

Really Mugabi, though all your points are correct, Joe six pack in Ohio will think it is like Rocky Balboa...there would be money to make out of that fightmugabi wrote:The time for a Klitchko-Holyfield fight was just after the Valuev robbery.
