Before the olympics I thought the same, I've since re-evaluated. I still think he'd do well if he turned pro now but I don't think it's the best option for him. He is still very raw indeed, in my view. Yes he won Olympic gold but that doesn't tell the whole tale, I'm not saying it was a soft medal, it wasn't but, at the same time, being as raw as he is wouldn't have won a medal in any other division. Another four years, fully funded in the amateurs, will bring him along hugely and by Rio he'll be outstanding and will be able to hit the pro circuit running and rise quickly into championship class.

I hope he does what I suggest but he might not.

P.S. put it this way, Anthony is a lot rawer that Lennox was in '84 and the extra four years didn't do him any harm, did they?
i think he should stay am too... heavyweights can go till they are 40+ so no rush.... but if he gets offered big bucks he should collect... you never know what or who is around the corner

Joshua is an awkard one to tell. He has reached the absolute pinnacle of his amateur career - but he is still just a baby in terms of a boxing career.

I would probably turn pro just BEFORE Rio.... or after depending on the talent pool there. My gut feeling is that Savon Jnr is going to improve at a similar rate and could get the better of Joshua next time, then all of a sudden he isn't striking at a hot time.

I aint convinced Joshua would have won gold in another venue.

I would also think maybe Ogogo should consider going pro. Again, don't think he would have won a medal in an away Olympics. He has a lot to learn, but at least in his weight devision there are a number of step ups and appropriate level pro's.

The rest I suspect should stay amateur, although I already feel they are missing opportunities by mulling over the future.... getting forgotton about.

Are they seeing what will happen with World Series Boxing ?

I am not sure how the funding may be affected, but I think that there will also be additional prize money available.

As far as I understand it the boxers will be boxing 5 round contests, not wearing vests or headguards and will still be eligible for the Olympics !

That has surely go to better (both financially and in terms of experience) to box eg. the German champion over 5 rounds than some journeyman with a 2-30 record who knows his role in the procedings.

I'd hope he could win the Commonwealth's and then turn over, not on prestige but on timing. Agree with you 100% though, he needs seasoning.

Selby has just had Yafi removed as competition, lighter weights don't make great pro money and he's young so he's got time, Taylor is the same. Don't think Stalker would do much as a pro, too late for him IMO, stay where he is and build to Rio if possible.

Evans should turn, I know he's young but he will make an stunning pro, he'll just stagnate as an amature. Ogogo should turn to, kids easy to market, in a sexy division and may not stay in favour as an AM due to competition - he could make a few quid.

I've no idea about Campbell - think he needs to do one or the other for the long term now though

As has been stated on a different thread, it looks like a number of them are wisely going to remain 'amateurs'. If they have another olympiad cycle in them, elite funding plus additional sponsorship is a far safer bet than turning pro. £30K per year tax free, plus training, physio, nutritionist, supplements, camps, travel, etc + whatever sponsorship they can secure. Why turn pro?
30k is nice, but it won't make you world champion and a multi millionaire, if there going to be under 26 before rio 2016 I can understand !

Good post. I'll bow to you on this one, I can tell you know more about the amateur fighters than I do.[/quote]

No need to, I'm a bit of the pulse up in the North to be honest!

Think you got it spot on with Joshua, I could see an accident happening as a pro now, 2/4 years and you'd like to think he'll be miles on - Lewis is an excellent example in terms of timing.

Watch out for Evans, for me he's a superstar waiting to happen, the kid could be the UK's blue ribbon fighter

Stalker, Campbell and Ogogo won't make great pro's in my opinion, they've got the current international boxing system down to a tee.

GB Boxing have found a formula that works, which mainly involves being tall and southpaw! But I found a lot of the boxers boring to watch. I am over the moon for their achievments, and supported them through every punch at the games, but some bouts were so dull. Compare Ogogo to the Brazilian who beat him and the excellent eventual gold medalist from Japan, and it was like night and day. The Brazilian was fluid, loose with his hands down and letting his shots go. Whereas Ogogo and the rest of GB had the high guard, fencing stye. This isn't a criticism just an observation. I like boxing, not 'fencing with gloves on'.

I think Evans would make a good pro but Selby could be dynamite. It didn't work out at 2012 but having seen him box a lot of times, there is just something special about him. The way he beat Yafai in the first box off was mesmerising.

Joshua really seems to have his head screwed on and won't rust into anything, he also trains extremely hard and I think there is a strong possibility he will stay onto Rio. Going pro isn't as good as it once was, and options are limited despite him having offers from Matchroom, Sauerland and Goldenboy, there's more incentive to stay amateur these days.

Savon was beautiful to watch, for me he beat Joshua easily, I was fortunate to be there ringside to watch it and he boxed like a lightweight. He will only improve, and I'm sure he'll be a gold medal favourite come Rio.

Joshua didnts fight the correct fight against Savon. Having seen them on more than one occasion I'm convinced had Anthony came out all guns blazing and put it on him from the off he would have stopped the Cuban.
Savon beat him that night though. It doesn't tell the whole story though.

I think big Josh should stay am and give the worlds another crack. If he wins gold there, well, it will be a case of having nowhere to go except the pros. I guess he could stick around and win commonwealth gold, of which he would be virtually guaranteed, and would almost certainly win in style, before turning over.

I wouldn't want to see him stick around until Rio. Another year or two sharpening his skills, travelling the world sparring the best and fighting the very best in the ams will do him the world of good.

Your right Gomez!!

Shocking really!! Nicola Adams seems to be getting the best coverage!!!

Joshua is to roar for the pro's!! I think defenetly rio,but he needs to start working with a pro trainer now. Witherspoon would be a great help to him IMO.

There is talk of a potential London franchise being set to compete in the World Series of Boxing which I think will be fantastic as it would fully capitalise from the success that they had at the Olympics and you pretty much have at as the GB podium squad like Team Sky is pretty contains all the Team GB cylists.

Enrico Koelling was the first from the class of 2012, though he's a German. I think Valdez, the Mexican who got a fair bit of attention has also turned over.

Not Brits yet as far as I'm aware.

GB have finally "caught on" - look at any international tournament and you will see a disproportionate number of tall, slim, southpaws who box at range with a flurry of light point-scoring punches before moving out of range (this is a bit over-simplistic but the point remains).
