A turning pro question

Post by Looking On »

Just a quick question and it not a dig at anyone so please dont interpret it as one .

I lad who ive trained for 3 years has just decided to turn pro

didnt tell me just left the gym and i now find hes going pro 6 weeks later

Hes going wiht Dennis Hobson im led to believe

Now this is no slant at mr hobson ,

Just that this kid cant shift a ticket to save his life

so in my opinion a journeyman route is all he will be looking at

hes descent but as a pro im not convinced hes good enough

Is Dennis really the guy he should be going with

hes in south yorkshire and i believe he should have gone with carl greaves as he knows how to maximise the income of a journeyman

i do feel kind of agrieved by all this but i just dont want to see him go the wrong route if thats what hes going to do .

theres no hard feelings and we are still on talking terms

And also on a side note am i right in thinking you cant box someone who is with the same manager ?

Just that i dont want him to fork out £800 for his license only to be fed to someone and left to rot as he would obviously be contracted via a managers agreement .

He asnt paid you any respect , just let him make his own mistakes , I've heard mr Hobson isn't a nice person but I don't know anyone close enough too tell me the full script as for mr greaves I've heard lots of good things about him as I live not too far away my self , greavesy for me but ignore him is better and let him get knocked about for peanuts

i hear you

Its pretty frustrating when you put so much effort into someone only for them to piss it all in your face

He didnt even have enough money to eat at one point and i gave him money and stuff to sort himself out

im sure anyone whos a trainer will have experienced similar

im applying for my trainers license with the board having built up a gym of lads

plucked a few from amateur clubs and a few from unlicensed fighting

maybe their old gyms feel the same as i do now when they left to join me

but this lads only young at 22 , 3 years isnt long in boxing

who knows if he could have been much better had he given it another year or so

its done now i guess and time to move on .

Boxers under the same manager can box but it has to be applied for to do it.

I'm not piping up here but if he really ain't any good he,ll never be a journeyman Maybe get beat bad a couple of times and give it up. There's a lot of difference between a lad that can't box and a journeyman

Good point, often forgotten. A journeyman is capable of putting a show on, getting through the bout, offering resistance and testing the local lad/ticket seller; there's not everyone can do that - there are harder men that can't box a lick and get done bad - walk into hard punches, head straight up etc. Being a journeyman is by no means the default mode of a non successful boxer.

Journeymen get thrown in at the deep end, if you can't fight you get hurt and found out very quickly

Johnny ill agree with that line of thought in the main part but...

I have seen and know some really poor pros , who some are journeymen and some arent

They arent as good as this guy , but i just dont think hes good enough to achieve anything and feel that a jorneyman route is his only option .

I know being a journeyman isnt easy and its often underestimated but if the journeymen were world beaters they wouldnt be journeymen , simple as that .

Some people in life are 'takers' and won't remember the favours people have done for them - they only look at what best for themselves, which is a poor approach to life.

You know the sort, they only ring when they want something. Life's too short and it seems its time to cut the chord on that one. There are likely others whom are more deserving of your time and thoughts.

I disagree to a certain extent. I was matched extremely hard from day one. Rob hunt 7&0 at the time. Dean Harrison unbeaten, Jamie cox then crolla in my first 4. I was old by then & knew I'd never get to Brit champ level. I was already on 20 a day and weren't prepared to give up the unhealthy lifestyle. Plus I knew I could earn more money fighting double regular.i never became a journeyman because I weren't any good. Just loved a beer & a snout.seen many an unbeaten fighter give up long before I have. 92 fights & still feeding the kids. I'm no bum

I agree with Johnny.

Also, great point made by Palooka.
